Trois jours passées a El Chalten.

Day 652 (10.01.09) Having arrived late the night before we hadn't really been able to see what El Chalten was like but when we ventured out after a lie-in this morning we were to be impressed with the beautiful surrounding scenery. Set in a valley next to a milky green river and beneath some incredibly imposing jagged mountain peaks the village has the potential to be superb but falls a little short as, even though its a fairly recently purpose built place, it doesn't seem to have had the benefit of town planners. The buildings which make up the village (mostly accomodation and a few shops and restaurants) sprawl out around the main road so it has no real atmosphere. We decided to go for a short walk to the Churillo del Salto, a waterfall an ... read more

Much of the enjoyment of a place for a traveller depends on luck and I guess it was the nice weather and the great company that made El Chalten my favourite spot in Patagonia. Unlike El Calafate, this little village is still developing and has not yet turned into a tourist trap. As soon as we arrive, the people who manage the national park - the entry to which, incidentally, is free on the ground that nature belongs to everyone - explain very clearly the treks that can be done in the area. Since it is already mid-day, we (the Swiss couple and I) go on a reasonably short hike to Laguna Torres. The weather is nice and the walk is enjoyable. I come back to the hostel tired but happy. Today it's time for a ... read more

I have finally left the confinements of the big city. woke up at 4am in Buenos Aires to head to the airport to El Calafate. I then booked a bus to head to El Chalten, Patagonia, to begin my first day of hiking tomorrow. It has been a long day of traveling but all went well and i was able to find a hostel here in El Chalten, even though it was expensive.... still less than 20us for a night. and as a bonus it inlcudes a towel, this is the first to provide a towel, the second hostel to provide toilet paper as the first hostel did not... ha ha.. what do you expect for 10us a night... It is very windy here but upon entering the area we were forced to stop and listen ... read more

Coz take cinime a plne si to uzivame.

Nun waren wir also in El Chalten angekommen. Was fuer ein genialer Berg. ... read more

Getting to El Chalten isn't that easy. You have to fly to El Calafate and get a bus. Sounds easy, but it isn't. We get picked up at the airport by a cool dude with long hair along with 6 others including an Aussie couple who tell us stories about having stuff stolen from their hotel safe in Columbia and the black market for money exchange in Venezuala - which makes us glad we didn’t visit either of those places. Also on the bus was a crazy Indian woman who wanted me to fix her broken watch, take a photo of a particular cloud and hounded the cool dude about whether lunch would be included on her tour. We were dropped into town to explore for a couple of hours before our 6pm bus to El ... read more

The trekking capital of the country! So - we do what everybody does around here: hike and climb and look for Condors! Dreamland for Jan Willem actually - the climbing part! First day in the Glaciers NP we went on a hike to the Lago Torre - floating ice in the lake hint a temperature around here: icy! But the sun makes up for it. It took us around 2-3h to hike until there through really all kinds of landscapes: forest, valleys, along the river, through the bushes... really nice. On our way we did spot a Condor, though very far away... We also saw Woody the woodpecker! But he wouldn't come out of his nest. Shy little fellow. On the second day we did couple of shorter hikes. One of which to Mirador de Condores ... read more

Hola, so this will be a series of blogs hopefully today, to catch you all up a bit on my travels. I traveled to El Chalten from El Calafate, and since it is in the mountains... no cell phone towers, no ATM, gravel roads, and unstable internet because of the satellite transmission, you will just have to bear with me now and i will take you through the last couple of days! EL Chalten is the cutest little hikers paradise town. It is located in the Parque Nacional Los Glaciares, and all hikes start somewhere in the town! Once again, I was super lucky with my hostel. (even got a huge fluffy bath-towel), and when i arrived in the late afternoon just went for a little hike to a great overlook of the town and the ... read more
