El Chalten a tiny little town on the edge of the Glacial National Park set up for trekking. You can walk out of the town and into the mountains in little or no time. We did 2 treks, to Fitz Roy and to Laguna Torre, both about 25km. The landscape is awesome but the town itself is not much to write home about. Still the views more than make up for this. We stayed in Rancho Grande and then Patagonia hostel, the latter more our style.... read more

Heading to El Chalten, world renowned for its trekking, we were looking forward to seeing some more stunning scenery and some good walks. The weather in El Calafate was beginning to get a little windy, but nothing like we were to witness in El Chalten. It was a 4 hour bus ride very desolate scenery until we reached Lago Viedma, where we could see the glacier Viedma running from the mountain down to the waters edge, it was very windy and cloudy so we didn't get the lovely view of Mt Fitzroy (3441m) that we were hoping to get, given that we had seen it from the aeroplane we knew what we were missing out on. El Chalten is inside the Parque Nacional de Los Glaciares and only a new town in itself, only having its ... read more

I'd hoped to sleep a little on the transfer, but the excitement had been a little too much to bear - my ticket said 8:55, in Buenos Aires they told me 9:55, my boarding pass said 10:55, and because it was aerolineas, we took off at 11:55! Anyway, I reached el Calafate at about 8pm, and was driven to a very plush hotel.. Where the german guys got out, and we were driven through a disused airfield to the hostel! Bit of a let down. Nevermind, dinner was included, a huge parilla with a good view of the lake. Another early start and I met the rest of the tour group; an austrian couple, a portuguese couple, 2 germans and 3 spaniards, and a second group of older canadians. We hopped into a coach and were ... read more

I arrived in El Chalten at midday on Saturday 19 September. It's a small mountain village (only 25 years old) and is ideal for trekking. I was the only person staying at the hostel when I checked in. The weather was not great, it was really cold and raining so I went to a cafe to watch some English football and get some lunch. After watching Liverpool beat West Ham 3-2, I returned to the hostel where the 2 owners (2 Argentinean guys) were about to watch a DVD (Get Smart) so I joined them. They had a huge TV with surround sound speakers and 2 comfy couches. After watching the very funny film, I spent some time catching up with my travelblog. In the evening, we sat and watched an Argentinean match and then I ... read more

Hola! I dont have much time to write because unfortunately internet is very expensive here (one satellite connection for the town) and there is no plug in to be able to post pictures, but we wanted to send out a quick update. We will be leaving here tonight at 11:30 PM to head up to Bariloche via a 33 hour bus trip, (yikes!)... Bariloche is sky resort town on a lake and is much bigger than the 600 population El Chalten where we are now, so I will be able to write a longer blog there and post some pictures... and they are good too! :) But, we spent 4 days backpacking in the national park here by the rugged and massive Fitz Roy Mountain and luckily had some really good weather for the first few ... read more

So after marching me aournd the mountains for 5 days Ed then put me on a bus for the entire day, we eventually arrived into El Chalten at 10pm. I went srtaight to be bed while ed worked out what other mountains he could climb in the area. The first day we both took it farily easy, ed went for a cycle and I read my book. The second day we got ourselves together and headed up to see Mount Fitzroy, the main attraction of the area. Unfortunately pretty much just as we started out it started to rain. By the time we got to the camp at the bottom of the mountain it was pissing out of the heavens so I turned back and headed for the village, we could see nothing of the mountain. ... read more

After we arrived yesterday we sat down and decided what treks we would do. There were two long treks recommended. One of the was called Laguna Torre and we decided to do that one first. We slept most of Friday afternoon as the few drinks, early rise and bus journey had taken its toll. We went to the supermarket and got a few bits and pieces for ourselves. Fried rice with vegetables was on the menu and always a great filler when hungry. We haven’t eaten out now in over nearly two weeks and find cooking for ourselves much better. You can have what you want for dinner and it’s probably much healthier. Also, you can meet lots of people in the kitchen that you can’t meet in the restaurant. While we ate last night they ... read more

Our legs are sore. Very sore. We have just completed a trek about 30km’s long, that went up and down the whole time. Our walking for the next while is over. In El Chalten we have walked a combined total of 140km’s over three days. Throw in a few mountains peaks and rather large hills and what you end up with is pain and exhaustion. We are not seasoned trekkers or by any means fit so what we’ve completed is an achievement. Michelle said she is rather sick of achievements and would like to be un-ambitious for the next few days. I agree. We had been promised good weather for the day and by god did it turn out that way. Blue skies and barely a cloud to be seen. It was cold out but when ... read more

The weather wasn’t great today to try and do the big trek we had intended on doing. Instead we had a sleep in and late breakfast. We did a few bits on the really slow internet and pottered about the hostel for awhile. The weather had cleared up so we decided to do a small trek (about 10km’s) called Los Condores and Las Aguias. We didn’t need to bring anything with us as we were only going for 3 hrs. The treks we had intended on doing are only about 6 km’s return but or walk to and back from the trek is 4km return. We made it to the start of the trail and had to climb 100 metres above sea level. Not so bad if it’s gradual but it was steep enough. We made ... read more
