I arrived in El Chalten at 7am with nothing planned. I had nowhere to stay, didn't have a map, and all I knew was that I wanted to go hiking in the national park. My usual course of action in these instances is to hit the tourist office, but thats closed at 7am. It was blowing a gale out, so I asked a guy where the nearest hostel was, and went and took refuge inside. This turned out to be a very smart move, as the hostel had a good map of the trails available around the area, and also a spot where I could dump my stuff before heading out into the National Park. As it happens, I wasn't the only one taking refuge in the hostel after the bus journey, and so it was ... read more

Get ready, this is a really, really long one!! Think of it like a few blogs in one, print it out and read it in bed! As I may have hinted in the last blog Ruta 40 was neither magical nor legendary, rather, it was the longest, most boring journey you could ever take! Please, if you are considering how to get from Bariloche to El Chalten or vice versa - for the love of god, fly! For the first half an hour the Patagonian steppe is fairly interesting for its sheer size and barreness, but it goes on forever. The most interesting thing we saw were about six road runners belting away from the road as our bus approached, and that was pretty cool, but constituted about 5 seconds of our two day bus trip. ... read more

After the "W" hike in the Torres del Paine National Park we returned to Puerto Natales and stayed there for 1 night. The following day we departed for the long drive to El Chalten in Argentina. El Chalten is a small village in a pretty valley within the Los Glaciares National Park, at the base of the famous Cerro Fitz Roy (3.375 m) and Cerro Torre (3.128 m) mountains. El Chalten exists purely as a result of tourism: climbers from around the world come here to climb the famous Cerro Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre as they are apparently two of the most difficult mountains in the world to climb. The area also offers world-class hiking. After a long day on the bus we discovered that we didn´t have a booking at our hostel. The owners ... read more

El Chalten is when we seriously considered ourselves to be in Patagonia, although the region officially begins just north of Bariloche. This town hugs the border that Argentina shares with Chile and is located in the northern part of Parque Nacional Los Glaciares. It's claim to fame: the Fitz Roy Range and most impressively Cerro Torre and Cerro Fitz Roy. Rugged and wild are two words that accurately describe the area. It's a hikers dream with trails and peaks that are so accessible, all you have to do is get out of bed in the morning. The town of El Chalten itself is still developing at a rapid pace, trying it's best to keep up with the growing demands of tourism. It has a long way to go but their first ATM was installed the week ... read more

Day 3 of Ruta 40 was a short hop from El Chalten to El Calafate. El Calafate is where we catch our flight down to Ushuaia. Our day in El Chalten was not to be wasted and it was with some relief that, as dawn broke, for the first time in 3 days we we weren´t up before it! Our previous 2 starts had been 6.30 & 7am, so it was with some relief that our excursion to the Viedma Glacier left at 8am. By this stage we were used to the Agentinian schedule of adding 30 mins to a scheduled departure and managed to squeeze in a breakfast at the hostel in time for 8.30. The Viedma Glacier is in the Parc Nacional de Glaciers, which is in both Chile and Argentina. The Viedma glacier ... read more

I guess to some degree I felt obligated to take the long rough road down Route 40 towards Chalten and Calafate. The two day journey was a long one that just seemed like it would never end. About a day and a half of the ride is unpaved, meaning very bumpy. Most of Patagonia is step. There really is nothing for miles upon miles but the wind that blows through the land never seems to take a breath. It´s just a constant hard gust. We broke the ride up into two parts staying in a run down town called Puerto Moreno (not to be confused with the glacier in Chalten). There was nothing there, just dirt roads and cats. Arriving in Chalten late night the hostal that was booked for me apparently overbooked the rooms. Because ... read more

Los mineros are back for a new entry. The first one of 2009, we hope you enjoyed the end of 2008. Happy new year to everyone. Many things happened to us during the last 3 weeks. Some good and some bad ones... First, we would like to thank the people who have created the "Los mineros group" on facebook. Here are the details of our trip in Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego. Villa Gesell & Puerto Madryn, Chubut Province (Eastern part of Patagonia): We decided to stop on the east coast to rest for few days in Villa Gesell. A bit disappointed by the place as it was too windy and cold to swim. Moreover our only investment was not as good as we expected. Indeed our tent is too small and not very resistant ... read more

The thing about maps is that the trails look so short on paper. I arrived in El Chalten on a blue sky day at about 6:30 in the morning after a 30 hour bus ride. After finding a hostel, I glanced at a map, picked a likely destination and started walking. Tee shirt and jeans were comfortable and the day looked great. I didn´t know much about the place... my new travel philosophy is founded on last years pre-trip Internet experience - I got so much information off the web last year that I felt I´d already been there so I never went. I knew that El Chalten was a place to hike but not much more... at the trail-head I took a digital photo of the map and headed out. Water bottle in my right ... read more
