Sorry it´s been a while......After getting our final supplies together (on Thursday 26th March) we got on the bus to El Chalten, which raced the only other company´s bus there all the way across dirt roads. On arrival we pitched our tent in the local camping ground and went to the visitors lodge to start planning our days there. However, the next day it started raining very early morning and didn´t stop so we became tent bound for almost 2 days! Fortunately there was a gap in the weather that second day and we were able to visit 2 viewpoints, 1 overlooking a huge lake and the other El Chalten itself (which definately wasn´t a pretty village!). We also visited Chorillo de Salto a big waterfall about an hour from the village, then swiftly headed back ... read more

Got up when Alex’s alarm went off at 8:15am, he leaves for Perito Moreno town on his way to Bariloche. I need to get up before 10am , check out time here in rancho Grande, I decided I probably will stay here for another night or two, it is nice, only 4 beds in a dorm and has got internet though not free and warm and comfy. So I got down for breakfast and paid for another night’s accomodation. After breakfast I decided to do a short hike. Alex mentioned he did 2 short hikes, the Los Condores and Las Aguilas, so I got out and put on my wind breaker and it is flying everywhere, the wind gusting but fortunately not so cold. I decided to last minute that I will go and see Fitz ... read more

ICE, SNOW, WIND AND COLD My lasting impression of this region will be how ice, snow, wind and the cold have, and continue to, mould the landscape. Glaciers such as Perito Moreno, just outside of El Calafate, continue to carve away what will one day be a high wide canyon. Bob assures me that this glacier is very impressive unfortunately I picked up a 24 hour bug so spent the day feeling sorry for myself back at the hotel. Photos of this massive glacier will have to wait as Bob only took photos with his camera which are too big to upload. Our next 2 days were spent at El Chalten a town which Argentina built in 1985 (and still is building - the financial crisis hasn´t hit there yet) before Chile claimed the area. ... read more

After hiking for 5 days in Torres del Paine, the only logical thing to do was to keep hiking! We took a series of buses from Puerta Natalia, Chile to El Chalten, Argentina. El Chalten is a quaint little town where the internet is still dial up and the paved main street turns back into a dirt road at the edge of town. El Chalten is home to Fitz Roy Mountain, Poincenot, etc. which is a set of towering rock spires in the Patagonia Mountains that are regularly out of view due to heavy layers of clouds. Our first day in town was no different and we spent it hiding out in a tiny microbrew restaurant, La Cerveceria Brew Pub hiding from cold wind and rain ... secretly happy since our bodies were still aching from ... read more

Hola hola!

Decided to take an afternoon bus to El Chalten from El Calafate to do a couple of quick hikes to view Cerro Fitz Roy, big famous peak. My thoughts were to get there in the afternoon, make it to the top in time for sunset and come back at night, then wake up and do a different hike and watch the sunrise, then catch an afternoon bus back to El Calafate and then try to head to Chile to Puerto Natales. Those plans didn´t quite work out. It was a bright sunny day all day until I arrived in El Chalten then the clouds started rolling in. So i quickly got my room changed clothes and hit the trail hoping to beat the weather. But no luck, Patagonia finally won a round. Shortly into the hike ... read more

El Chaten The next day with clear blue skies, we were off again on a 5 hour bus journey to El Chaten; a town at the foot of the Fitz Roy Mountain Range. Through yet another wilderness (much more deserty this time), with a multitude of grey rocky mountains, screes from sandy brown to grey (we're talking serious sedimentary layers) and lakes of every hue of blue. Patagonian weather is still being kind to us as we arrived into El Chaten, a small town formed in a valley, with the buildings made by the people who live in them. New buildings are popping up like mushrooms, literally out of chipboard, wooden fence poles and lots of hollow ceramic bricks, that are all chipped and broken in transportation from Northern Argentina. It felt like a frontier ... read more

This blog was written by my travel buddy Simon...... Day 1 - Leave El Calafate on bus to El Chalten After enjoying a touch too much Malbec the night before with some people we met in the hostel we kind of missed our scheduled bus and had to book another for 1pm. All went OK from there as we headed off for what seemed a very easy 3 ½ hour bus trip. However, we left fairly clear but windy weather and headed off into what can really only be described as ‘a cloud'... Driving rain and blustery winds gave the impression, once again, of the place being a harsh frontier town only suitable for the very hardy... I did see a couple of Condors overhead as the bus entered the valley... Boy they are big! Apparently ... read more
