It is official. I´m addicted to trekking. Even when I hate it, I love it. 3 days after Torres del Paine I found myself on a "relaxing" 4 day trek in the northern part of Parque Nacional de los Glaciares. Compared to the circuit in Torres del Paine, this definitely lived up to the relaxing description. I met up with Joel, the French Canadian guy who I had hiked with in Torres, in El Calafate and we decided to head up to El Chalten that afternoon in order to start the trek the next day. The sunset from the bus in between the two cities was absolutely stunning. Let me say here that none of the pictures I have taken have done justice to the scenery in patagonia...I don't know if it is possible to ... read more

It only took us 5 hours from El Calafate. We were immediately impressed with the beauty of the place. The village is nestled amongst dramatic cliffs and snowy mountains. We went to the camping grounds intending to camp but they had 3 chalets available. We took one with 3 other people. It was beautiful inside. There was a kitchen, a bath, king size bed, and 3 singles. We were glad not to be pitching the tenting. In the evening, some of the group cooked a wonderful meal of sausages, potatoes and peas. And of course, lots of wine to keep us warm. Next day we took things a bit easy in the morning, had a nice long sleep in, and in the afternoon went horse riding. That was fun. It was for 3 hours, 4 of ... read more

Hi Everyone! Just back from 4 days camping in Los Glaciares National Park here in Patagonia. The first thing i should say about camping for 4 nights is that that´s a heck of a lot of food to carry. And stupidly I didn´t leave any of my stuff in the base town (El Chalten) on account of not liking the hostel i stayed in the night before the outing. So there I was hiking around with about 20kg in my rucksack! And whatsmore I ate all the nice food - 2 bars chocolate, biscuits, 4 peaches, cucumber, in the first two days and was left with the horrible stuff for the last two (corned beef... surely not how i remember as a kid, tortellini that tasted of mushed potato, and mouthfuls of patagonian grit courtesy of ... read more

This was the first time we really felt like we were starting to travel in South America. We arrived at the airport at 7.30am for our 8.50am flight. All seemed well until a delay flashed up just before we were about to board. New departure time 10.30am. Not too bad so we went off for our first caffeine injection of the day. The first noticeable thing was that security was not particurlarly secure. The main airport toilets were actually past security so people were constantly going in and out. If the detector went off, you could simply point to something metal on your person and the guard waved you through… no major terrorism concern here then. As it got close to 10.30 we thought we should investigate what was happening. A small melly of spaniards ... read more

After our mammoth journey all we wanted to do was find a place to crash out and relax. This proved to be rather difficult with El Chalten's growing popularity with climbers and trekkers; the first few hostels we tried were all completely full! We eventually found a little place after wandering around for a while, right opposite where we'd gotten off the bus in the first place! We had come to El Chalten to go trekking and climbing and spent the following day wandering around checking out the options available. We soon discovered that the local tourist information could give you all the maps and information you needed to go trekking in the surrounding area, which was great as it meant no need for guides etc. Whilst walking around we did find a few other ... read more

I couldn't sleep till very late and got up at a similar time to the previous days. Talal was still sleeping. We'd talked the previous day that we'd do our own things. I went to the National Park's information centre to enquire about the trail to Loma del Pliegue Tumbado because on the map it was noted as "unmarked trail" and I wanted to find out if I could do it alone or whether it was wiser to spend my day doing something else. The ranger explained to me that the path was very well marked until the end of the forest and afterwards it was down to me to pick my own route of getting to whichever of the three “peaks” and that even the first one offered excellent views. I spent a lot ... read more

This time we (Will, Claudia, Talal and I) knew where the path to Lago de los Tres starts. Our hostel is very conveniently situated to the three most popular hikes. After some uphill that helped us warm up pretty quickly, the first view of the majestic Fitz Roy were revealed in front of our eyes. Along the way we met Carlos, Robert’s Argentinean friend, and some other guy. They were carrying all their gear and were going to camp out that night at Poincenot. Brave, we thought! We had a brief stop at Rio Blanco - a camp for climbers only. On my wander around the camp I noticed a wooden plank. It read “SAUNA” It was closed. But lucky climbers! The other camps are lucky if they get a stinking loo! On our way ... read more

At about 8-8:30 we met Claudia and Will at the common dinning area of Rancho Grande hostel to have breakfast and prepare sandwiches for lunch. By the time we reached the (wrong) start of the trail it had hit 9:25am. The route to Lago Torre was fairly easy and mostly relatively flat (at last by my standards, which are set by my beloved parents). The paths was well shaped and at times with dry tree trunks laid on the ground. There were warning sings that “burning toilet paper causes fire in the forest”! We definitely were not the only people who went to see the spiky peaks. It felt like were on the high street of a largish town. On the way, we saw a couple of rabbits, many green parrots (why did I spend ... read more

The tiny village of El Chalten (1000 inhabitants in the summer and only about 200 in the winter) is big on the itineries of all trekkers, climbers and mounteneers. In the language of tehuelche (a South American tribe) El Chalten means "Smoking mountain" as they thought the Cerro Chalten mountain was actually a volcano for it was covered with clouds/smoke most of the time. El Chalten is at the base of Fitz Roy which is famous among the climbing comunity (apparently) due to its sheer granite faces and challenge it presents to those who scale it. This remote village with unpaved roads and only a few restaurants is unbelievabely charming, for now catering mostly for backpackers, but getting ready for the more comfortable crowds. As soon as we got off the bus and saw the stunning ... read more

El Chalten and the Fitz Roy Massif - 15th to 19th February We get an early morning bus from Puerto Natales to El Calafate - within the hour we cross the border from Chile to Argentina. We feel sad to leave Chile after so much time here. We arrive at El Calafate and immediately book a bus ticket to El Chalten, to leave in a couple of hours, but then I see a sign saying that there isn´t an ATM or bank at El Chalten so we have no way of getting any money especially as I still don´t know my PIN numbers! We change our bus ticket to the next day and arrange accommodation at the local youth hostel. We spend the rest of the day wandering around El Calafate, looking in the shops ... read more
