So, leaving Bariloche with NO hard or mixed feelings, or in Henry´s words, "the road out of town, my favourite one"!! (insert Texan accent). But again, parting without pain, as again the road gave some magnificent views on the lakes we passed, and from the eastern Side on the Andes as well. We didn´t drive too far that day (not in mileage, just in hours), and ended up in a bus camp in one of the many National Parks (first pic). As you can see, it was well worth using the shovel for toilet stops that night, a really great place to camp. Maybe a bit windy, and the water wasn´t warm in any way, but that didn´t stop some of us (not me) to jump in for a quick dip. Noice! The road further south ... read more

Just north of nowhere... "Nowhere" is a little non-specific, so let's just call it Ushuaia. Obviously at the time that I came up with that heading, Ushuaia was not the place closest to my heart... but kinda like that annoying kid in school, the one that you just can't tell to "f*ck off" because they aint really hurting anybody, I have softened a little on Ushuaia... and anyway most of the time, that annoying little kid at school was me... Calafate... The road north to El Calafate was hardly recognisable from 40 thousand feet above it. One good thing that Ushuaia boasts is a half-decent airport, a facility that we took great pleasure in utilising after all of the recent bussing misadventure. Our cohorts included Andy, the unlucky melbournian, who had learnt nothing from his ealier ... read more

Hola We are presently back in El Calafate just for the day. The last few days we have been in the town of El Chalten in the northern section of the Los Glaciares National Park. This is the premiere trekking destination in Argentina. The mountains are the main attraction, Monte Fitz Roy is the tallest in the park at 3405 meters and there are several others over 3000 meters. They are spectacular however not so much because of their height but because of their steep sides and glaciers, lakes and streams. The weather in El Chalten is similar to Torres del Paine. Like in TDP the mountains in the park where you trek are only a couple of kilometers from the massive Helio Sur (Southern Patagonian Ice Cap) which is the largest area of permanent ice ... read more

Well folks, here we are! Hope you´ve been anxiously awaiting your next installment of Landon and Maresa´s traveling circus southbound. Minus the animals, we often feel like a clown show bumbling from town to town. Sometimes there are animals...like the random dog that follows you home and pees on your tent, or the one-legged, red-eyed pigeon in the park. Although, we have yet to pull in money like the carnies do. We´ve had some major changes in the last few months and as always some fabulous stories to go along. We´ve changed continents, hemispheres, and when before we were merely boyfriend/girlfriend we are now engaged! Although some things are still the same. For example; we´re still wearing the same clothes, don´t wear deodorant, and havn´t worked in 5 months. We left you last in Boquete, Panama ... read more

EL CHALTEN -back in Argentina and the last few days of our Patagonian sojourn. El Chalten? Stand aside Chicago, we have a new town stealing the mantel of Windy City. The wind here could take the wrinkles out of one of those dogs whose skin is too big for it´s body. The town itself is straight out of the wild west. At any moment you can picture Pablo and Juan bursting into the dusty street for a good old fashioned shoot out. El Chalten´s raison d´etre is it´s proximity to the National Park and the Fitzroy Mountain perched on it´s doorstep. What sort of weather would you prefer not to have if you intend to spend time in the great outdoors, wind or rain? How about both in volumes on our first day, the clouds blotting ... read more

Well we finally made it in El Chalten, Santa Cruz province in Patagonia after an arduous and tiring trip down the famed Ruta 40. What seemed like days of gravel only road, surrounded by pampas stretching into infinity, the group and our fearless truck made it through the worst portion from Esquel to El Chlaten, some 1200 odd kilometers of gravel washboard. At times, the slobber seemed to fly from your lips as the unending washboard and the corresponding reverberations shook us, similar to what the first lunar entries must have been like I’m sure. The scenery was stark, dramatic, enormous and bleak all at once, with brief visual reposes provided by the few oasis´ sheltered from the driving Patagonian wind. The experience was a hell of a ride to say the least and we ... read more

PART VI: El Chalten: January 8 to January 13, 2007 The isolated village of El Chalten located at the base of Mount Fitz Roy is a true international destination for amateurs and experts in hiking, trekking and climbing. According to the Lonely planet, El Chalten was built in 1985 in order to claim the territory over Chile, and consequently became the youngest Argentinean city. From the village, we can observe , on a clear day, the gigantic mountains and their peaks topped with snow. January 8 After finding a warm and clean hostel called “ Hospedaje La Cima” which was managed by a genuily welcoming lady named Liliana, we went for a late dinner at a restaurant recommended by a Scottish couple. La Fuegia ended up being an exceptional place serving a variety of flavourful meals. ... read more

I am having a nightmare. An unrelenting headwind is blowing dust and grit into my face as I ride directly into it. The wind is progressively sapping my energy, blowing me across the road or off it, and frustrating all my efforts to move forward. I retreat inwardly, ignoring the brown landscape, experiencing nothing but the roaring in my ears and the constant attention my bike needs to keep upright. But it's not a dream; it's our first day cycling in Patagonia. We had planned and catered for 3 days, plus 1 day's contingency, to complete the leg across the semi-arid Argentinian steppe from El Calafate to El Chaltén. Leaving El Calafate on Christmas Day loaded up with 10 litres of water, plus rice, pasta and veggies, we set off east into a fast tailwind. 32km ... read more

Saluti mitenand! Hier ist schon die Fortsetzung.. ;O) Wir hoffen, ihr seit alle wieder brav am arbeiten! :o) Wir denken ganz fest an Euch! :o) Auf 2 Wanderungen hat ... read more
