Hit El bolson for some even more relaxed fun. Didnt think we could find anywhere even slower than the rest of Argentina. The norm in Argentina is waiting at least 45 mins for a toasted sandwich and about 30mins after you ask for it a second time everywhere. This was even slower!! Its was cool down here cos its the way everything is. The place is placed in a valley with Chilean mountains on one side and Argentine ones on the other. The hostel Athlos Del Sur was a bit out of town up a mountain but it was nice. The owner was cool and we spent the next few days just drinking and chilling. The second night we built a fire out the back, drank wine and sang some tunes with the Irish girls we met ... read more

So after 3 Nights in Barriloche we headed south again to El Bolson, a town of about 20,000 people but also one that houses mostly hippies. Now when i think hippie i generally thought of stoned people with rose coloured glasses and vacant expressions on their faces repeatedly saying stuff like 'yeah, man' and 'Groovy'. Unfortunately the reality is no where near as glamourous. We arrived in town and arranged some taxi´s to take us to our Hostel, the hostel was ´10 mins from the center of town, now i dont know how fast Hippies walk but they would have had to have a jet pack or a sever case of explosive dihorrea to complete 5 miles in 10 mins. Anyway enough ranting, the first night we headed into town to find some music that we ... read more

Given that the mountains around Bariloche were snowed in, I decided to head south to the town of El Bolsón ("the handbag"), named so because it sits at only 200 m elevation surrounded by lush mountain ranges. This town became sort of a hippy haven starting in the 60s and is now famous for its microbrews, ice cream and chocolate. I couldn´t have been happier... After resting a bit at a hostel outside of town, a group of us (Kati from Germany, Oscár from Buenos Aires, and David from San Diego) headed up into the mountains for a 3 day hike. Having eschewed the luxuries of refugios up to this point, I decided to at least buy dinner in them, although I insisted on carrying my tent. The first day´s hike was a thigh burner with ... read more

I´d been in El Bolson for a few days enjoying the warm sun and friendly vibes, but was ready to move on and discover some of the great local camping I´d read about. Not having any idea where to start, I decided to pack up and head for the lake, when I met a group of Argentines headed to a place called Cajon de Azul. They were doing an over-nighter at this refugio, which turned out to be the first of three along a 25km trail that ends at the Chilean boarder. Kindly, I was invited to join them, but they were leaving in 5 minutes and I had to dump weight to do the hike, so I passed on their offer. Also, they were only staying for a single night and I was looking for ... read more

Today is Friday, February 9th in El Bolson around 1pm. My bus departs for Esquel at 3pm. Yesterday, I slept in, grabbed a mountain bike rental and started up toward "Cabeza del Indio" a rock face cut into the side of the mountain. On the way up this 4km ride (all uphill), apparently the 6km was easier, were incredible views of the Rio Azul (Blue River), Cerro San Francisco, Cerro Alicia, more mountain peaks than I feel like naming. Awesome spot. Cabeza del Indio was cool. I stood on top of the rock above the face and took loads of pictures. Next, I grabbed my mountain bike toward the waterfalls which was another 2 or 3kms away. The name of the waterfall is Cascada Escondida. On the way, to the falls I ran into a flock ... read more

I have reached my next destination of El Bolson (between Bariloche and Esquel). The bus ride from Bariloche to here was amazing. The mountains grew closer and closer. One covered in snow, some rocky and jagged, other were almost hills of trees and grass. The valleys between the road and mountains were rios or river with bedrock. Very beautiful. The trees resembled pines and furs. The soil was dry, rocky and dusty, but covered with shrubs, trees and other greenery. We passed small shanty towns on the way. Kids running in these dusty streets. Plywood houses about the size of a San Francisco apartment. It was a different side of this area. One I had not seen. I noted a guy on houseback waving to a man tending to his garden. Simple and good people. The ... read more

WEEK 7 A RESTFUL WEEK After Carole's departure north I am now travelling on my own again for 2 weeks before Felicity arrives in Bariloche. Before I started travelling the thought of being alone in a foreign country with limited local language skills was terrifying. I sometimes think - 'here I am in Argentina- I dont know a soul and nobody in the world knows where I am! ' But - in actual fact as you walk along the street or get on a bus everyone else is just going about their day to day business and you are hardly noticed. Perhaps if I was a young blonde in shorts I would have more problems- but being a granny back packer and dressed appropriately everyone is very helpful, courteous and respectful. Now I enjoy travelling alone ... read more

From Esquel we have gone north to the national park de los alerces, named after very old trees that grow there that are similar to redwoods. we spent i think 2 days there and went on some hikes before moving on. we passed by the town of chilola, where butch cassidy and the sundance kid lived (we missed the turn to the house- things are not well labeled here) to the next national park, named lago puelo. both parks follow a similar theme: large glacier fed lakes hemmed in by snow capped mountains. lago puelo is especially interesting because of the large open valley and winding river that lead to the lake and because of the neiboring town of bolson. bolson is famous for being a hippie center in the 70´s and still maintains this charcter ... read more
