Merry Christmas! We hope everyone is having a great holiday! As for us, things are pretty good. It´s only 100 degrees and sunny today. . . . a little too warm actually, but I guess we can´t complain too much! Christmas isn´t a very big holiday in Argentina, at least by American standards. Most of the stores are closed today, and waffle day did not happen, but other than that there really aren´t many signs that it´s Christmas. We have seen a couple houses with small trees, but no stockings, no Santa Clauses, Rudolph, snowmen. . . . .nothing really. It makes it a little hard to believe it´s the end of December! Yesterday was really hot as well so we took our intertubes and floated down the river to where Matt has been catching our ... read more

We have been in El Bolson for about a week and a half now and are loving it! The town is beautiful, surrounded by huge, glacier cap mountian, rivers and lakes. We really couldn´t ask for more! However, we did have a first big disappointment of the trip. . . the camera with all our pictures was lost/stolen. I don´t want to get into the long complicated story but it looks like it is gone. Luckily we have posted a lot of pictures of the trip online. . . now we are just hoping we can email some of the people we met through Peru, Bolivia, and early Argentina to get some of the pictures back. We still have a camera so we can continue to provide pitures for ourselves and all you lucky viewers. Oh ... read more

Last time we wrote we were still in Bolivia. . . . That feels like it was months ago! We survived the 17 hour train ride! We knew we were in for an adventure when we showed the man at the station our tickets and he smirked to his coworker as pointed to the last car on the train. Needless to say we were riding with the locals. That wasn´t bad except we stopped at every town along the way where people were shuffling on and off the train with their HUGE bags of things to sell in the next town. Oh, and this was all happening between 11pm and 4am. . . . we didn´t get much sleep that night. Crossing the Argentina border was also interesting. It took us over 2 hours to get ... read more

After an overnight bus trip from Trelew (with Mar y Valle - recommended) we arrived in cold and crisp El Bolson. We loved El Bolson from our first day - beautiful location surrounded by mountain peaks, great food and drinks, good value, friendly locals... you get the idea. The main reason we liked El Bolson so much though was its proximity to the mountains and excellent one-day hikes. A first day starter hike was up Cerro Amigo, a hill overlooking the town with lovely views. However, by our second day we were ready for more of a challenge. First stop was the "Cabeza del Indio", a rock formation said to look like a head. The place was empty as we are here early in the season, but the weather was perfect for hiking. From the cabeza ... read more

El Bolsón When I read that El Bolsón was known for it's micro-breweries and hiking, I had a feeling we might be visiting the town. We liked it so much that we based ourselves here for a week, spending most of our days hiking in the mountains around the town, or further afield in Lago Puelo or Alerces National Park, and our evenings drinking beer and planning our next adventures. El Bolsón was founded as a hippy community in the 1960's, but don't come here expecting everyone to be lying around stoned and listening to Bob Marley! The people here seemed no different to us from anywhere else in Argentina. It's the first and only non-nuclear community in Argentina, though what exactly this implies beyond the statement I don't know. Climbing Piltri: Our first Patagonian Summit ... read more

El Bolson is a little town, in the province of Rio Negro ( the province just up from Chubut) with maybe 15 000 people, not sure. I went there 2 weekends in a row, the first time for an afs party and the second time just with my parents. El Bolson from what I gather is the equivilent to the byron bay of australia. On saturday and sunday mornings there is the ´ferria ´which is a craft and food market full of hippy type stuff and the town has alot of really good ice-cream and chocolate and other such things as well. Like the rest of patagonia it is also surrounded by beautiful scenery. I went on a little hike up a hill which overlooked the whole town, and visited a nearby lake named ´Lago ... read more

So after a week of bum massages and sitting around the hostel in Bariloche hanging out in the warmth, the weather had changed by now and the wind was up and rain was coming more often I decided it was time to leave. Mind you my first stop was only 2 hours down the road but 2 hours is 2 hours. The town is El Bolson and known for being the organic capital of Argentina and having some of the best markets in the country, right up my alley way. I arrived on market day and was lucky enough to get some sunshine in the afternoon to allow me to take a leisurely stroll around and check it out. This town is set in one of the most beautiful places I have seen and again ... read more

To Tierra del Fuego, the ´land of fire´ Disclaimer: It has been two months since we updated this blog...if anyone has tried to check it since then...sorry to dissappoint. But here comes the long anticipated two months in brief (hopefully brief..) summary. We´ve basically been doing a two month national parks tour, hiking a lot and sleeping in our tent about 40 of the past 60 nights. From a small town in argentina called Junin de los andes we made our way out to Parque nacional Lanin, a beautiful series of lakes that lie beneath the impressive shadow of Volcano Lanin. We found a spot to camp with a series of mini cliffs to jump off into the clear, crisp water below. We cruised rapidly through a touristy town called bariloche, complete with a giant ... read more
