El Bolson, a hippy town 2 hours south of the touristy Bariloche was a treat to say the least. Beautiful warm and sheltered microclimate and a ´tranquillo´ atmosphere made for a relaxing two nights spent here. While Mom and Scott lived in luxury at a small hotel, Laurence and I camped in a small campground, which was more than adequate. The highlight of the town was its market, held on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, which was a great cultural and gastronomical experience. The micro climate affords El Bolson an incredible crop of strawberries, raspberries, gooseberries, fresh honey and backed goods and a smattering of artesian chocolate, all at bargain basement prices. We filled our bellies on the most delicious strawberries I have ever eaten, which seemed as though they were covered in sugar, but weren’t. ... read more

PART IV: El Bolson: January 3-4 January 3 Considering the omnipresence of foreigners and overwhlemingly touristic area in Bariloche, we decided to only stop for breakfast in Bariloche and aimed to a smaller destination El Bolson. Arriving in the town of El Bolson at the end of the afternoon, you could clearly feel the pleasant village atmoshpere. We went camping that night after a quick dinner looking forward to further experiment the local vibe at the feria. January 4 The next morning, after a great "cafe con leche" (latte) and "tostado primavera" (toasted sandwich), we headed to the local feria where artisans were exhibiting their arts and food products. The atmosphere was extremely intimate , and therefore pleasant, as tourists were absent from the feria. We had the most flavourful fruits and "licuados" (fruits and water/milk) ... read more

....in El Bolson. I arrived in this small town, located just 2 hours from Bariloche, on a rainy afternoon. All I knew about this place was what a Columbian tourist from the last hostel had told me, that it´s a hippy little town with a nice arts and crafts market. At the bus station I´d made a last minute decision to take a chance and stop here prior to making my way to Bariloche for Christmas. Little did I know that I would spend a lot longer than a day here. I hopped off the bus and stood at the side of the road, somewhere, with no idea where I was and where to go next. I took out my guide book and flipped through the pages, there was very little information on El Bolson, but ... read more

hello from el bolsón! i finished up with my exams on december 7 and i took off the next day for bariloche. i spent the night in bariloche where i ran into a girl from claremont mckenna college that i had a spanish class with freshman year...small world. the next day i took off for el bolsón and i have been here ever since! i wish i could post some of the amazing photos of the gorgeous landscape here, but i cant figure it out with the hostel computer. i did stay at a farm-hostel the first two days, and helped out a bit with the other volunteers, then i took off on a hike up a mountain called Piltriquitron, and stayed the night in a refugio (cabin) at the top where i met an israeli ... read more

Mention El Bolson and you'll hear from folks (and the guidebooks) "hippie town." So I was thinking stinky, tie-dyed, unwashed, dreadlocked stoners reeking of Patchouli banging on djembes like chimpanzees. Well, happily, I can say that wasn't the case at all. The only thing hippie about El Bolson that I noticed was the "all-natural getting back to nature" vibe of the place -----and I think that's a good thing. At first glance, El Bolson looks a little rough around the edges but look a little closer and you'll see its charm. I liked El Bolson a lot and if you're looking for a nice little town to spend a few days being a little closer to nature but with all the comforts of home nearby, then this is the place. ... read more

Well, yet again sorry it´s been so long between updates. I´ve been traveling again.. yay. Well my last week in BA, was pretty routine, going to school walking around. Went out one night with my room mates which was fun, to an all you can eat meat buffet, for like $15 aussie, and it came with a bottle of wine, and desert, and salads, cheese´s olives, all sorts of delicous food. Had a good conversation with Cynithia, she´s a really cool chick, and I supose that is about it. Ohh I also played my best game of pool ever. Cynitha broke, and then I sank 8 of my balls in a row, winning the match, pitty she wouldn´t play commercial rules for losing 7 balls up. Ohh I also did some cloths shopping. I brought myself ... read more

Outside of Bariloche there are lots of scenic roads, like the seven lakes lakes route, little touristy hamlets, and there´s El Bolson. I took a roadtrip with a Kyle, an Aggie, but hey a fellow Texan in Argentina, and Megan his friend from California. The first day we headed south to El Bolson, which has a reputation as a hippie town. come to pass, most of the people we met were in fact BA burnouts who had moved out there for a change of lifestyle. we climbed a mountain for some incredible views of the valley, and on the way back to the hostel, stopped at the El Bolson Brewery (there are lots of breweries in those parts) and had some incredible beers, including chile beer like that in texas...and we all decided it was magic ... read more

El bolson is the hippy town of Argentina. We arrived and could not find a hostel in the village and so took a taxi 2 a hostel 4 k out of town, pretty much in the middle of no where!! We loved it here as there were no other backpackers and we had a big fire and an aga to cook on. The hostel was by a river and was really peacefull and beautiful. Me, Nikki, Jenny and Rach had a night in around the fire and our other 4 mates arrived the next day!! The four of us decided to go and see the carvings at the top of a mountain ( yes everything in argentina involves hard work!!!) So we hitch a lift to town and try and hire bikes and they laugh at ... read more

Know what the unluckiest thing to do in South America is? Bump into travellers fresh out of Argentina. Invariably they'll bore the arse off you about the place. They'll have you believe it's full of supermodels, the food's world-class and everything's so cheap you'll be left wondering why their worthless currency even bothers changing hands. The country famously spent many years sliding into economic meltdown culminating with an unpegging of the currency from the US dollar in 2002 that led to most of the population effectively losing two-thirds of their wealth overnight. Things have settled down now, but in reality, the weakness of the Argentine economy means the people here really don't have much. Yet in the 1950's the place had one of the biggest economies in the world. I mean, there are cheaper places in ... read more

El Bolson is a hippie town, approximately 120km south to Bariloche, situated in an amazing valley. Before coming to El Bolson I thought that 'hippie' and 'Argentinian' are 2 words that cannot represent the same person, but El Bolson proved otherwise. There everything is very tranquil, and in the local market you can find different crafts that show its' true nature, like medicines for horses, different stones, herbs, and organic food. After spending some time at the market, I went to a nearby farm to do some fruit-picking. One of the workers there told me that it's the end of the season, and that all I can find is just a few bad strawberries, so she won't charge me for the entrance. The truth was that I had never seen so much strawberry, and it all ... read more
