Marcel, Ben, Pieter and I went on our first ocean safari today…sadly, no whale sharks. But I did see my first ever Hammerhead shark and Black Fin Reef shark. We also encountered two pods of dolphins, both bottlenose and humpback dolphins. I was not in good position to take photos of anything. The water is full of plankton, so in order to get a good photo you’d need to be within 6 feet, I think. It was my first time in a zodiac (a sort of rubber boat), well not the very first time, the first one was when we went to look at elephant seals in Great White Shark infested waters, so obviously the goal was to stay IN the boat. Getting in and out of a zodiac has its challenges. Also there are no ... read more

Monday 9th April 2012: Apologies if the blog is getting boring for a while but it’s been another day of totally self-indulgent laziness. We’ve gone to no lectures, no quizzes, no anythings really. We spent the morning eating and working on our scrapbook and this afternoon eating and working on our tan. The pool is a wonderful temperature and the only thing that spoiled the afternoon was being woken up by the sound of loud snoring. OK it was my own snoring but even so! We’re now in the Arabian Sea and have sailed nearly 1,000 miles away from India with over 600 to go until Dubai. And not a single pirate to enliven the day! I feel really sorry for the lookouts. They have extra crew stationed around the ship now and they ... read more

Easter Sunday, 8th April 2022: There’s very little to say today and that’s because we’ve done very little today. We are way out in the Indian Ocean, it’s very hot and very sunny so a very early gym session was followed by a long, leisurely breakfast. Then a bit of work on our scrapbook was followed by a long, leisurely lunch. And that was followed by a very long and very leisurely session next to, and in, the swimming pool. The wildlife count kicked back in today with one flying fish and another of the magnificent mega pods of dolphins. But sorry – the dolphins did their thing while we were at lunch so we didn’t have our cameras to hand. We’re off to a cocktail party this evening – which is just a ... read more

CRUISING THE INDIAN OCEAN EN ROUTE FROM KOCHI TO GOA. Saturday 17 March, 2012. Another day at sea and more of the same. M went to craft class in the morning but didn't make the Sun Catcher on offer. Instead she used the time to finish her painting on silk cards and to get her memory book up to date. D went to the Syria and the Arab Winter lecture which he found disappointing, although he enjoyed the 'Can you live without a Container?' lecture later in the morning. After lunch there were exhibitions of the watercolour paintings and all of the items that had been made in the craft sessions. As M had been to both classes and had watercolour 'masterpieces' on show as well as her newly completed silk paintings, memory book and jewellery ... read more

CRUISING AT SEA EN ROUTE FROM PORT BLAIR TO KOCHI, INDIA. Tuesday 13 to Thursday 15 March, 2012. This is our longest stretch of time at sea so only have information on ship activities. M went to the craft group on Tuesday morning and produced 6 paintings on silk and followed up with the art class after lunch where she painted a watercolour of an oasis in Egypt. Tuesday's show was a cabaret by Harry Smith (one of the ship's theatre company) where he performed songs from well known musicals. It was ok but we both thought that he should have sung songs that were as well known as the musicals from which they came. Most of them were very obscure. On Tuesday night we received a notification in our cabin about the ship's impending transit ... read more

CRUISING THE ANDAMAN SEA. Sunday 11 March, 2012. Another day at sea so not a lot to report. M went to the craft class in the morning and made a bracelet with a funky heart and arrow clasp. D went to the lectures. We both then went for lunch in the restaurant. After lunch M went to the Art Class and painted a fort scene in watercolour. We had a good dinner with good company.... read more

This is our 4th day at sea. Rather than give a day-by-day account of our activity, which would be rather repetitive (i.e. got up, had breakfast, laid out in the sun for a bit, came indoors, had some dinner etc… I'm sure you get the picture), I will just outline some of the highlights and observations of 'goings on' whilst we head ever closer to our next stop - Salalah in Oman. Whilst walking on the promenade deck 6, past our muster station, Roisin exclaimed: ‘Where's our lifeboat?' Sure enough every muster station had a double-hulled lifeboat with twin prop that hold a capacity of 109 persons. As our muster station was at the end of the deck, all we had were a few inflatables. (25-person max). If in the unfortunate event that we'll need to ... read more

Part 2:SOUTH AFRICA: Richards Bay (KwaZulu - Natal) - Port Elizabeth - Cape Town - Durban - REUNION ISLAND - MAURITIUS - Fremantle. Part 1: Fremantle - Singapore - Kuala Lumpur - Penang - Phuket - INDIA: Cochin - Mumbai - Goa - MALDIVES - SEYCHELLES Day 27: 29th. May: Richards Bay: Coming in to the bay was beautiful with very calm water and reflection of ships at the dock was just lovely. We had booked a safari at Thula Thula so we were excited. The Zulu name Thula Thula literally means peace and tranquility and it felt like that when we arrived there after a short drive from the ship. We transferred into one of the safari vehicles and we were off on rough tracks so holding onto the rail was necessary as we bumped ... read more
