After another late leaving party on the Saturday night woke up early on Sunday 17th October ready to set off on my travels. All I had to do was pack my rucksack, get all my tickets together and find my passport!! So with a banging headache I packed my clothes, shoes, information etc and went to the airport with my Mum and Dad. After a shaky handover of the tickets to the woman at the desk we sat down for a coffee and a final chat about what was to come in the next seven months. There were a few tears shed by my Mum as i said goodbye and walked through the gate to wait for the flight. The flight from Manchester to London was only 45 minutes so compared with what I still had ... read more

By now you've probably noticed that most of my travels been in the winter. The reason is simple, in my line of work, spring time and summer are usually filled with projects, making it hard for me to take leave. Also, there simply aren't a lot of public holidays during the summer time. In the winter, I can usually get away with taking maybe 10 days of vacation, and get out 20 days of break by stringing together the Christmas and New Years holidays. Also, in the winter time there aren't much activity in the office anyways, so you can leave guilt free. Anyways, after having travelled exclusively to cold places for the past 3 days, I was fed up in 2004 and determined to go somewhere warm for a change. Even though I would still ... read more

I found the scenery from Auckland to Wellington pretty amazing, much of it was used as a backdrop in the Lord of the Rings Movies. Most recognisable was Mt Doom in Mordor (Mt Ruapeu) which is located in the centre of the North Island, on the train there, i had lots of tourists pushing and clammering over my lap at the window waving their cameras in my face at it like their life depended on it. God chill out!!! you muppets, i hate that part of travelling, you feel like a sheep when you pass something that has been in a movie. Anyway (exhale) it felt great to get out of Auckland and its dull atmosphere. Wellington is a beautiful city known as the windy city like Chicago both deserve their names, although it feels more ... read more

We survived the camping trip to the Outback of Central Australia to see Uluru and the Olgas. They are truly remarkable, very ancient sandstone monoliths that change colour in response to changing sun angles and a real contrast to the surrounding flat desert. We also visited Kings Canyon like a miniature Grand Canyon. We were rudely awaoken each morning at 4:30am and off hour later to do our hiking early and beat the heat. And what heat - unusual for this time of year - it hit the low 40's every day - you could almost feel your boiling. Surprisingly, there is vegetation out here, ever some gum trees along with shrubs and the endless spiky Spinifex grass. How the Aborigines survived in these conditions is amazing. We saw little wildlife other than lizards - sensibly ... read more

In Echuca, Vic. Spent something like 10 hours on the bus getting to Melbourne and then had all day in the city to wait for my bus to Echuca. First impressions of Melbourne - FANTASTIC! So much going on! There's the fringe festival, an arts festival, something like 5 sports stadiums, and an outdoor music venue near the botanic gardens. Another place I wish I had more time to check out... I've got to return to Australia in the future when I'm rich. It was a shame saying goodbye to Paul after such a short time. I'd only known him for a week but he was such a gem of a travel buddy: easy going, lots of laughs. Hopefully we'll meet up in Melbourne at the end of the month when I go back there. Tuesday, 12 October 2004 This mornings session at the Kindergarten was the shortest I have experienced. I got to the room at nine o'clock, only eight children needed to be photographed and was finished three-quarters of an hour later. I headed north out of Bendigo, by way of the Midland Highway. This took me to the border town of Echuca, where I crossed the Murray River and into New South Wales. The town of Moama was passed and I was now on the Cobb Highway. At Deniliquin I left the major highways behind and followed a secondary road to the town of Conargo. I was planning to turn towards the east but at the junction I noticed a sign indicating a lookout, seven kilometers north of town lay a flat landscape which promised to stretch between ... read more
