So, I have made it across Australia - still a concept that for me as a European is hard to grasp... you sit in an aeroplane for 4,5 hrs, fly across a continent and still you are in the same country. Hard to imagine. I stayed last night at Barnaby & Anna's place, got picked up by the taxi and arrived in time at the Perth Domestic Airport. Funnily this terminal is much, much busier than the international airport - if that doesn't tell you something ;-) The flight was pretty smooth and sitting at the window I had the opportunity to get some aerial views of Australia - my dear friends, I can tell you, this country is dry. Apart from the ocean I haven't seen a single major body of water. No running rivers, ... read more

The Wild Green West is a three day west coast tour of Tasmania (otherwise known as Apple Isle) booked through Adventure Tours (www.adventuretours.com.au). Day one included hours of travel on the bus (and an opportunity to grab several naps to catch up on the time adjustment) from Hobart to Tullah. In between naps, I discovered the diversity of our group of 21 tourists. Combined, we represented a wide range of areas across the world: America, Asia, England, Ireland, France, Belgium, Denmark, Switzerland, Canada and Holland. Needless to say, I have been exposed to the surface of many cultures and now have a deep fondness for the French accent. Amber and I were the only Americans and were generally picked on by our tour guide, Adam (from Australia) because of our accents and Texas residence. First stop: ... read more

We arrived in Alice Springs, the centre of Australia and the middle of a desert, to be greeted by rain and a closed town as it was a bank holiday. Luckily the flying doctors station was open for a brief tour, as was the excellent reptile centre where all the local creepies, crawlies and slidies were kept. Ness particularly liked the python! Luckily, the following morning we got out of town and started a tour of the "local" (meaning within about 600km) sights. We first headed for the craggy, colourful features of Rainbow Valley. After a brief stop to meet the world famous Dinky the Singing Dingo, we drove to Kings Creek Station, a cattle station in the middle of nowhere, to spend the night sleeping under the stars on swags. The following morning after an ... read more

David decided to go surfing with his friends so me and Tayla take a walk down to the Red Lion, no it's not a pub (what do you think i am) it's an artshop! I buy me and Tayla a cute little ornament and i buy myself this gorgeous glass pendant which has green and blue inside it and it is a bargin for $25 as it is handmade. Tasmania…certainly a picturesque state and my amateur photos do not do God's marvelous works of art justice. Amber and I departed Adelaide on January the 8th to arrive in Hobart, Tasmania for a short holiday. We shared a cab ride to the airport with Jason and Shane, two guys from Melbourne who thought we needed a quick lesson on cricket. They proceeded to tell us about Donald Bradman, a legendary batter equivalent to Babe Ruth, as we drove past the park named after him just outside the city. Just to give you an example of this "no worries" attitude of Australia folks, Shane picked up the cost of our ride to the terminal without hesitation. We spent our first afternoon wandering around Salamanca market, an eclectic shopping district, which gave us an inside look into the ... read more

Arrived in Adelaide AUS on Thursday January 6, 2005 after about 20 hours of flying, airports etc…The girls and I, unbeknownst to us, had a pick-up arranged by Flinders University, the director of the Graduate Social Work Program’s daughter “Myf” picked us up from the airport and assisted us in finding accommodation. We ended up at the Plaza Hotel on Hindley St., in Adelaide’s red-light district which was as a tame a puppy dog. We spent two nights there and although amenities were far from the Plaza I’ve always wanted to stay in, the service was exceptional. The hotel staff, Gary in particular, could not have been more helpful and even came in with a grin when one of the girls clogged up the toilet, no worries! Staying awake the first night was a struggle, but ... read more

Since I have never found myself so far away from home, I have never attempted any sort of travel journal before now. I have hunch that we are all in for some version of the truth. That is, knowing how faithful I will be to sharing an accurate and timely account of my travel experiences as time progresses. I thought that it might be cool to include some of the Australia terminology I am learning on a daily basis along (i.e. Word Bank) with some differences I see in the country in comparison to my experience as an American (i.e. Culture Shock 101). The Travel Tips portion of my entry will include those instances I find myself thinking "I wish I would have known _____". So with that said, let the adventure begin... G'day Mates! G'day all, Fri 7th Jan Wow what a sleep in i don't get up till 12.15 so hopefully i have caught up with some sleep now and don't need to have my afternoon naps. A trip into Cowes again this afternoon to buy some furniture for Davids place and i have decided that i have fantastic taste because everything i like David seems to be buying, unless we both just have great taste! He buys a gorgeous TV cabinet and when we get it back it looks great and doesn't even block any of his view of the sea so even better. I decide to go for a walk before dinner and David decides to take me on another trek but this time in a different direction and we end up clambering all over rocks and ... read more

From South Africa I moved onto Sydney, and when I arrived I felt like Brooks in Shawshank. The world had gone and got itself in a big damn hurry. Instead of the sedate pace of South African life there were people absolutely everywhere. It was quite weird after six weeks away from it. Anyway Sydney is cool, and as I have explored the city more have really enjoyed it. Christmas Day here was actually pretty rubbish, the weather was cold and windy but I headed down to Bondi Beach all the same. Not really much going on down there so after a couple of hours I simply wandered back. Christmas away from the family - even if it was in Sydney, just wasn't Christmas. New Years Eve on the other hand was something else. Gary and ... read more
