Huka Falls is New Zealands number one tourist attraction but we'd never heard of it, it was on the hostels free to-do notice board though so we were sold. It's a 3 hour bush walk with amazing views from a number of different points along the way with the spectacular Huka Falls at the end, now we've been let down by 'spectacular falls' recenlty in Okere but it was free and another amazing day so I pakced some luch and off we popped. It was a long walk just to get to the start of the trail and we fought off the desire to stop and eat lunch and continued on to the Falls bush walk. Our first point of interest was a natural spa, about 15 minutes into the walk, it was like a wee ... read more

So, I said I would not make any promises and here I am a little over three weeks later, feels like much longer. I spent the following few days doing the cultural touristy stuff since I was on my own, I hit the State Library, The Botanical Gardens, Museum of South Australia and Aboriginal Art Museum, some definitely more interesting than others but each definitely worth a look, some fascinating art. The Botanical Gardens were beautiful and I found myself there almost every afternoon until the rest of the crew arrived. I had the chance to spend some time with people from all over the world, with roommates from Hong Kong, Germany, Sweden and France. I spent most of my time with two guys from England one who was a worker at the hostel and one ... read more

Courtesy of work, I just spent two weeks back home in Melbourne, with a day trip to Sydney. It was very strange being home - probably the worst culture shock I've ever experienced. It wasn't just the extreme quiet of the streets compared to Bangkok, being out in the 'burbs again, the cleanliness, the lack of pollution, the weather, the wide streets, the different trees, everyone looking very white and overweight, the dreadful accents, but, most of all, the relaxed and comfortable nature of life, the much higher cost of goods and services, and the ability to spend lots of money on luxury goods and attendant materialism. It was very hard to stomach this, after living here where people earn so much less and have much more restricted choices than in Australia, and after having seen ... read more

It is just a couple of hours left for me here on the north-eastern coast of Australia. I am currently sitting in the internet cafe of Gilligan's Backpackers Resort in Cairns. This is probably the flashiest backpacker's place I have been to so far. Very good and clean rooms, well trained staff etc. Still it somehow feels wrong. I think it is because I'm a bit old fashioned and have this image of backpacking being a bit filthy thing. But as anyone travelling around Australia can probably tell, backpacking is moving to the next level: backpackers appear with Samsonite suitcases and beautycases, pulling their luggage on trolleys behind them - still a minority but probably being a harbinger of the next backpacking generation. What else is there to tell about Cairns? From my point of view ... read more

The alarm went off unbelievably early and for a moment neither of us could remember why - surely it wasn’t Friday again? No, thank goodness, it was definitely Saturday, and (even better) the Auckland holiday weekend, which meant three days off instead of two, a hire care to be collected and places to be visited. So armed with our trusty backpack, our chilly bag (couldn’t quite stretch to a whole bin) of food, and a credit card, we collected said car and headed off into the wide blue yonder. Well, Hamilton, two hours south of Auckland, to be precise. We had a lunch date with my second cousin once removed, whom I had never met before. Lunch turned out to be lovely - despite never having met me before, Iain and his wife Sue were very ... read more

For the first time in this trip we didn't feel sad to leave somewhere, Rotorua was a nice place and we did see some amazing things but the smell was too much and the hostel too noisy, we didn't sleep well during our stay, anyway onwards and upwards, our Southwards in our case as we hit the road to Taupo. We leave early as we've planned a stop half way to visit Wai-O-Tapu park, a Thermal Wonderland as it markets itself. Wai-O-Tapu (sacred waters) is New Zealands most colourful and diverse volcanic area, it's full of stunning geothermal activity and colours of every tint in pools, lakes, craters, steam vents and thermal terraces. I was really impressed by this place but Fiona wasn't to bothered by it, she liked it all and that but that pungent ... read more

Dearest friends, I'm sad to be leaving! Last night, that debacherous eve, at the farewell gettogether, it smacked me full in the face to see how lucky I am to know so many wonderful people in Reno. (Believe me, they're there, lurking in the dark corners of the biggest little city.) The foreigners are pretty sweet too *wink wink*. A few words of acknowledgment; To my girls Emily, Windy, Erika, Veronika, Eva and Daniela, many thanks for your fun girly gifts and male-loving/bashing support. You're all the best and I'm in looove with you.:-) To my brother Rob and my very special Amer, thanks for letting me be a Gypsy bum and crash at your houses Aug 04 thru Feb 05 rent free -- even though I tore up the bathrooms with an blizzard of ... read more

Dick says for me to warn you that it takes a long time for us to upload pictures to the Blog, so if you go to our latest entry and find no pics, try again later and see if some are there. They may not show up right away. We have rejoined our ship today in Papeete on the big island of Tahiti, after spending the last two days on Bora Bora. I know we've said this before, but Bora Bora and its sister islands must surely be the most beautiful place on earth. Each one a green tropical paradise surrounded by green, turquoise and deep blue waters. The Bora Bora Nui Resort that we went to was just unbelievable. Dick and I both agreed we had never seen anything to rival it in beauty and ... read more
