Today we are in Murchison that is on the Buller river. The Buller is a nice and fast river, lots of water especially after it rained all night. In the morning we went to attraction number 1 here: The longest swingbridge in New Zealand - 160 meters long. And to come back you don't have to cross it again (not that it's was in anyway scary after all I did so far), but you can fly back on omega! In fact it wasn't scary either, I was a bit disappointed, but it was fun. In the afternoon we went rafting!!! Erez raised the idea and I said ok, but I was scared to death... and when we got on the boat and got all the explanations I got even more scared. The river was high and ... read more

Well I am still in Dunedin and have a feeling I may be here for awhile. There is quite a bit to do around here and because I am working at the Backpackers I am able to do some tours and surf lessons for free or discounted which is really nice. Working at the Backpackers has been a blast so far. I was warned by the staff who had left that you can get addicted to this sort of lifestyle and she's right. You definetly meet interesting people...I am working in the office taking bookings for rooms and tours, quite fun. Fernanda (the English gal)and I are sharing office hours and she's quite a bit of fun. I start netball tomorrow with a Kiwi girl Jenna which should be a lot of fun (not that I ... read more

We arrived in Cairns on Joey's birthday, (Great birthday present eh? I planned it that way...........HONEST!!!). Breaking with our skinflint tradition, we went straight to a hostel as finding a campsite would have been really difficult. As it turns out it's a good job we did as two days after arrival, a cyclone hit the coast just north of Cairns and brought with it five days of continual heavy rain, Oz style. Hostel life was a fair eye opener for me (Mark) as I've never stayed in one before, it was pretty good actually, apart from the single bunk beds!! 15th of March, having just bought a camper van, (not as anyone's interested but it's a Toyota Tarago 1984, 2L petrol) we left Cairns to work on a dairy farm/nursery for three weeks, the van's absolutely ... read more

Well the end of my New Zealand trip has finally approached. And it is easy to say that this is the most beautiful place that I have ever been. New Zealand is everything you have heard of and more. Things have been pretty much the same since my last update. Tobias and I continued to work our way around the southern island in our trusty stead "Bill". We camped, and tramped, snuck into hostels to cook and clean, did a little fishing and other things. It rained a little more this time, which means we slept in the car more often...including last night...and to tell the truth, sleeping with Bill (the car) is starting to get more and more comfortable (a few beers makes things even better). Last night Tobias and I were hoping to sleep ... read more

The hike didn't come without cost, with a good muscles pain. But since it was foreseeable, we planned for the day after an easy day with hot springs in the middle. We went to the pools in Hamner springs, which were not as nice as I expected after Baden Baden and Andora, but still it was a refreshing day (with also 500km driving but I don't drive anymore...) The next day we went to a place called Karamea, it's the north end of the road in the west coast, and they have some beautiful karst caves, or more true arches - kind of tunnels that the river cut in the mountain. Not many people go there but it was beautiful. At the night we stayed in a private house that belongs to Hiburim organization. It's like ... read more

Fremantle has got to be the cultural centrepoint of the whole of Perth. It has excellent cafes and classic pubs and is still the major port harbour for Perth. Its great just to have a walk around visiting all the excellent markets and seing the old Fremantle prison where all the convicts were housed. The port itself always has a large number of would be fishermen that always seem to have their buckets empty yet you cant help wanting to sit there aswell in hope of catching that elusive red snapper that just never seems to bite. In the end it doesnt even matter because sitting in the sun and having a couple beers in the fresh air is more than enough. Something about seaside towns that give it a kinda nice charm no matter ... read more

Well, enough of the cappucccinos, the beach by day, freshly grilled barramundi washed down with a decent chablis by night, urbane lifestyle of the Australian eastern coast cities - it was time to see the real Australia - the vast emptyness of the virtually uninhabitable middle. This tortured land, only pioneered by europeans 2 generations ago, is still frontier country, where men are men, and sheep are worried, and a bloke would never be seen dead drinking wine. Firstly, a flight to Alice Springs - the heart of the outback - and the furnace like heat (46 degrees) hit us like a brick when we got off the plane. The red dust all around gave the impression we were on mars, just with a bit of scrubby bushes lying around. The town itself is a huge ... read more
