Tuesday I said goodbye to my time at The Magdalene Centre. I cannot even begin to explain how difficult it was to part will all of the relationships formed over the past three months. I was and still am so honored and blessed to have had the great pleasure of working with and for a great group of individuals. My heart overflows with thankfulness for their openess, kindness, and hospitality. I was given a proper Aussie roasting which included a beautiful breakfast meal and an Aussie farewell sing along that Peter (my supervisor) wrote for all volunteers present to sing chorus. I was moved to tears and very much speechless. I did not expect to be honored in such a way...Peter shared a few words along with come other volunteers, everyone pitched in a purchased a ... read more

In Queenstown we saw Kiwi (in captivity), went on a jet boat (way cool!) safari up the Dart river, saw loads of LOTR locations at Glenorchy , visited an old gold rush settlement at Arrowtown...oh and Emma jumped off a bridge with a piece of elastic tied to her legs (wait until your see the DVD!). It seems we visited this area at exactly the right time as everywhere was bathed in late summer light augmented by the browns, reds, golds and yellows of deciduous trees...very New England in the fall. For interest, all native trees in NZ are evergreen but the colourful autumnal ones were introduced by settlers over the last couple of centuries.... read more

"Steggy" is short for stress-o-saurus which is appropriate since Aussies shorten words and names. Steggy was given to me at the footy match as a gift from Kameron. She thought I needed a little something to cope with the stress of leaving the group in a couple of days. So, not only will I use Steggy when things get tough but he will also travel with me throughout my remaining time in Australia. We (that is, Kameron and I) decided that I needed to take photos of Steggy over the course of my last month's travel. With that said, here is Steggy's first stop: AAMI Stadium.... read more

After spending a few days in Nimbin i had a crazy idea that i could hike all the way back to Byron Bay. Armed with a novelty map and a few days rashions i headed off solo into the mountains in the hope that i will find the ocean. I was so wrong! It didnt seem that long a way perhaps only about 50 km however i didnt expect that the majority of it would be uphill and steep aswell. After meeting a crazy man who told me the whole track had been closed off and that there were evil bunyips up there ( see Australian folklore ) I was determined to press on. Anyhow after the first day i was already completly exhausted and decided to camp anywhere i could find. It was next ... read more

Hi, its me again, with news just in from the south island of NZ. Have covered a lot of ground (surprise surprise) since the last one. A theme has emerged over the last week of 'record breakers' so this log is dedicated to the TV programme of the same name. Its worth mentioning that on my way down to Stewart Island, I went near a place called Geraldine which has the world's biggest jumper. Its BIG. However, I would also like to enter it in another category of world's worst jumper. There lots of embossed sheep emblazend onto a argyle background. Unfortunately I don't have a photo to express the awfulness of this extraordinary item of clothing. Anyway, yeah, I spent a couple of days in Dunedin, climbed the world's steepest street. Its VERY steep and chock ... read more

DAY 12 : REST DAY DUNEDIN-- TE ANAU (BUS) Washing in the morning - used our bikes as a clothes line. Went into the city to update blog and see if we could catch a bus to the west side of NZ - we're kind of behind schedule so we figure this should give us a couple of extra days to try and make it North. Everything turned out to be a roaring success, with a bus leaving at 2pm. DV even had time to see if he could get some chocolate from the cadbury factory just across from where we were catching a bus. He would have had to do a tour before he could buy anything which seems stupid. So he went across the street to Countdown (supermarket) and bought 3blocks of cadbury chocolate ... read more

What a fabulous weekend. It was so nice to get out of the city and view the Barossa and a footy match. Footy is short for Australian Rules Football or AFL. It’s not rugby or gridiron (USA NFL football). The best way I can describe it is as a mixture between rugby and soccer. It’s very fast paced and the blokes are incredible athletes. Fortunately, we had tickets to the “big showdown”-Adelaide versus Port Adelaide. We decided to “go for” Adelaide which was lucky for us since they won the match. The stadium was packed full of very loyal Adelaide and Port fans...we attempted to fit right in. Do you think we pulled it off? Fun times! Our week around the Perth area. Yippee! We have arrived in Perth WA! Wow it’s so gorgeous here! Sun, sun, sun, everyday, coupled with Perfect endless beaches we really do feel like we have found paradise! When we arrived here we felt great ‘cause due to our Singapore stopover, no jet lag! So after Auntie Pam picked us up, it was straight down to the beach to catch a golden West Australian sunset! Tuesday we caught the train (which runs down the middle of the motorway) into the big city. We took one of those open top buses around the city and up to Kings park (the biggest city park in the world) and then caught the ferry across to the zoo. Wednesday we spent the day catching waves at Scarborough (not the uk one!) Thursday ... read more
