Well, we're getting closer to being an actual real-time travelblog for the first time in a couple of months! Our trip to Melbourne was always going to be primarily to visit family, so we weren't expecting to see too much of the surrounding area - and after 6 months of seeing all kinds of wonderful things I wanted to dedicate time to family. Roy and Carol very kindly picked us up from the airport - they waited an hour extra for us due to Qantas's incompetence. We stayed most of the time at Roy and Carol's but also stayed for a few days with Sammy and Dean and their two girls Stephie and Christie. It was really fantastic to catch up with the family again 12 years after the first visit. We worked out that it ... read more

The surfing lesson was a huge success - Laird Hamilton had better watch out. I have to keep convincing Karl he really doesn't need to buy a board though. We slowly made our way down to Sydney via some gorgeous beaches and spent a few days there taking in all the amazing sights. Climbed the Harbour Bridge (after doing a breath test) wearing a boilersuit and attached to a static line. Cooking in the camper went out the window with all the great bars & restaurants. Today was another beautiful day so we spent the morning at Freshwater beach, near Manly, and then drove up here to the Blue Mountains. We're planning a 4 hour bush walk from a place called Blackheath tomorrow so I'll be braving the eight-legged creatures again. Sorry for the lack of ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Uluru April 14th 2005

Okay, this will have to be short but here is a summary of my time in The Red Centre: Kata Tjuta National Park is home of Uluru or Ayers Rock (1325 square km and a peak of 546 m) and The Olgas or "many heads" (36 domes). It only rains 307.7 mm per year in Ayers Rock and I was there for some of it. The cloud coverage hindered a beautiful sunset and sunrise of Uluru which took some of the fun out of my journey. However, the 9.4 km walk around the base was well worth the trip. I had time for reflection, to enjoy the diversity of Uluru and even spot a dingo! Kings Canyon was the highlight of my travels into the Centre. It is located inside Watarrka National Park. We did a ... read more

The good student In case any one is wondering I have been busy, busy busy! Yes as a matter of fact I am so overwelmed with work at uni that I havn't had so much time to do other things. It takes alot to adapt to the new system, reading everything in English and writing assignments using academic phrases I didn't imagine exist. However, that's what I'm here for isn't it?? I enjoy reading about countries I would never get the chance to study in Sweden such as Indonesia, Japan, China and Malaysia to mention a few. All the study aside, I would like to know how you all are doing. I would like for everyone of you to just write me a short mail and letting me know what's the latest in your life. YES ... read more

After the farm, we headed off back down to Cairns to take in the sights and sounds of Cape Tribulation which is farther north from Cairns, it's a beautiful area full of pristine tropical rainforest, we had a few days down there before heading off. On the way back we decided to do a spot if hang gliding, ( Jo's idea, and what a great one!!! ), weather conditions were just about perfect, the views were amazing and the experience was one not to be forgotten for a while, needless to say we loved it! After spending all that money we thought another job might be a good idea so we phoned Pat up and asked about returning to the farm for a few weeks more, unfortunately he was full up but his best friend just ... read more

Deep breath. Dearest friends and family, Let me begin by giving a gentle reminder to all who have the luxury of having the Internet at their fingertips with little to no agony. Don't take it for granted! When I have a keyboard underneath my thirsty hands, I feel as though I've hit the lottery (even though it costs an arm and a leg.) New Zealand is not a cheap place, by the way. Everything, especially food, is just as, if not more, expensive here than in the good ole U.S.A.! Back to the juicy stuff. Here I sit, in the cramped upstairs internet room of a coffeeshop in downtown Auckland. It's roasting hot up here, and damn, does this diet coke taste so nice and frosty cold, considering that I haven't had the joy of ... read more

Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Outback » Roxby Downs April 12th 2005

Hi there all the new people that have been added to our Travelblog list, and sorry to those that I have been practising on over the last few months!! Well the count down is on I guess as we both finish work Friday 15th April and fly out of Roxby on the morning of the 20th April. First hit and run stop will be Singapore on our way to Japan where we will spend a few days near Osaka and then Tokoyo. From there its off to the UK, Europe, USA and Canada, but more about that as we travel. Joshua and Kaleb have promised to do several things for us while we are away, so I guess this will be a big test for them to. Feed the dogs, birds and fish. Pay the bills ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Coromandel April 12th 2005

We are getting close to Auckland… feeling the end of the trip in NZ getting closer. But still we have some more to see. The last two days we spent in an area called Coromandel peninsula. Again there are beautiful beaches in one side of the road and green hills on the other side. It is not amazing like in the beginning but I still enjoy it a lot. It’s so relaxing. We are tired of hiking and even though we planned one last hike, when we discovered it was longer than we thought we gave it up. A hike of 45 minutes (return) to the cathedral cove seems enough - and also very rewarding, as you can see in the pictures. We also took a ride in a narrow gauge train, which was funny and ... read more

Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Adelaide April 12th 2005

The night before my final departure from South Australia, we engaged in a game of South Australia Trivial Pursuit. To our dismay, team Ossian and Katie answered the first two questions correctly. In one hour 3 teams had actually managed to collect a total of 7 pie pieces. It's amazing how much we have learned-some of us more than others! Saying goodbye to the Aussie 7 was even more difficult for me than exchanging farewells with TMC. Not only was I saying goodbye to my home in Adelaide and the experiences of my time there but I was also saying goodbye to six other amazing individuals. I never would have thought that all of us would have grown so close and gotten along so well (with very few "mishaps"--see list below). It was an experience of ... read more
