After a 5am start, we travelled into real outback today - miles and miles of flat, red country that was surprisingly green after recent rainfalls. We spotted a BLACK HEADED PYTHON by the side of the road and stopped in Winton (famous for being both the birthplace of QUANTAS and the venue for the first performance of the unofficial Aussie anthem "Waltzing Matilda"). For a BBQ lunch we visited the awe-inspiring Carrisbrook Cattle Station which is set upon a vast tableland and were taken to see some aboriginal rock art by a waterhole on the property. Later in the afternoon we stopped at the Middleton Pub - we're talking real middle-of-nowhere stuff with racing camels in the backyard and some top crazy outback characters including a cowboy-hatted bar tender who chased the girls in the group ... read more

Had a really great evening at the top of Queenstown Gondola for the Kiwi Haka, although the food was a little crappy with no sign of the Maori dishes that were meant to be on offer. The experience was great - particularly as all and I mean ALL the men had to get up on stage and learn and perform the new All Blacks Haka!!! HAHAHAHAHA... read more

Grabbed the Ferry this morning having decided to spend time in Wellington on the way back. Not much to shout about in Picton, and we moved on to Nelson quite quickly. Didn't do too much today either, having a slightly more relaxing time, though did take a walk around Nelson main streets etc. Then finished up with a game of football. And a by the way on football, I'm actually travelling with another Norwich fan called James who lives in Thorpe and plays football at the Power League! "It's a small world after all!"... read more

Hello from the sunny and rainy climates of Cairns! Arrived here on Wednesday from Alice Springs. First thing I saw as I stepped off the plane was mountains covered in rainforest and the sun setting behind them with a lovely red glow. Noticed while driving to the hostel that Cairns has a lot of bars, hostels, bars and hostels! The night life here is quite good but there's not much else to do. It's like Alice Springs people come here to stay the night before heading up North to Cape Tribulation or the Great Barrier Reef. But saying that it's a nice place to chill out which is what I've been doing. On the front is a place called the lagoon (a glorified swimming pool) which was built as there's no beaches in Cairns, a nice ... read more

Got woken up at 6am by Stefano getting the anchor up which was of course attached to our room(!) so chains were clanging like crazy for 10 minutes. We set off and the boat was rocking really badly so Lucy went up on deck feeling queasy. I was fine at first and even pigged out on a whole fruit and nut bar as i was so starving, but unfortunately as soon as i saw up i puked the whole thing up! Nice. Felt really rough, like most people, so we just sat on deck and tried to eat breakfast. We moored in a bay and got the dinghy onto the beach where we walked to Hill Inlet (next to Whitehaven Beach, the most photographed beach in the Whitsundays) where we could sunbathe on the fine, white, ... read more

We left Cairns early in the morning for our 2,067km journey to Alice Springs. First we joined the Kennedy Development Road and travelled for hours through the Atherton Tablelands, stopping for a walk to Millstream Falls in the Millstream National Park. Eventually the rich rainforest gave way to less dense Ironbark Eucalypt forests and we spotted Eastern Grey Kangaroos and Emus. This was to be the scenery for the rest of the day. Later in the afternoon we stopped for a walk to Porcupine Gorge before arriving, late afternoon, in the town of Hughenden for our overnight stay in a motel/hotel where Tim fleeced the locals in a Killer Pool contest ($26 prize!).... read more

- FOOD: Lunch overlooking the blue haze of the eucalyptus trees; pizza at Tom's and good wine. - PEOPLE: Some unfriendly train staff; tourists in a hurry; a security guard who mistook me for a suicide jumper!; drag queen hosting Bingo; Tom and Amy making me feel at home. - AREA: Double decker train to the Blue Mountains; fantastic view from Echo Point of the blueness and Three Sisters; Giant Stairway (not so giant); peaceful walk until the touristy coalmine; a scratchy lyrebird; rainforest walk through cool shaped trees; not worth it Skytrain; loud parrots; Erkensville for the 'Priscilla' Imperial Hotel. - WEATHER: Well, it didn't rain... Tue 30th Aug: I didn't get quite as early as I'd wanted to - it's not easy when seeing so much of a place by night! After speaking to ... read more

I also attended a protest against a Conference of the world's top 300 CEO's, which was organized by Forbes. This was also quite disappointing. I didn't really get the feeling that the protest was a popular movement, but just a group of a few hundred students, anarchists and other disaffected groups of people. The group of people marched to the Opera House, where the conference was being held. However the Opera House had been completely fenced off, and surrounded with hundreds of cops (who probably out numbered the protesters). Some people started swinging on the fences, and eventually broke through, at which point the police charged in en-masse, including a number of police on horses! It was about then (with the adrenaline pumping from the excitement of it all) that I decided that I didn't want ... read more

Woke up this morning to Kea's (huge, cheeky parrot like things) shouting their heads off on top of someones campervan - although thankfully not ours! Headed off this morning to catch our boat for the cruise, which was awesome, although the day was very misty and not as clear as we'd have liked. Observatory was really cool and lots of really nice fish and coral to gawp at! Decided to head back to Te Anau as the lack of civilisation and the thought of spending another night in LOG country was a little daunting :o) Off to Queenstown tomorrow to watch the Haka, visit some kiwis and do Shotover Jet. ... read more

Seems so long ago that I'm trying to catch up and it's only a couple of days!! If I remember what happened on the way to Wellington I'll add it later, but having arrived in Wellington we took a trip up the cable car to the botanical gardens overlooking the city. Then for the evening we started downstairs in the Base Backpackers bar, us girlies were lucky enough to receive vouchers for free bubbly!! Then took a tour round town and visted an expensive (grrr!) Irish Bar. Early start for Ferry tomorrow morning.... read more
