After last nights' party was a bit dull getting up to typical British weather aka. RAIN, RAIN AND MORE RAIN! Stopped at the Bushman Centre on the way to Franz, is a small place which gives information on different ways the people on the West Coast make a living and how it came about. So saw a video all about deer hunting, and how they were orignally introduced to enhance the wildlife but became out of control and people were employed to destroy the deer and save the trees(!) But as always things went the other way and they became endangered. The eventual conclusion is that now there are large numbers of deer farms to control numbers and give people businesses. Also saw (live) possums and fed one, it was so soft! Then met a nice ... read more

(Gem writes...) We are in Byron Bay at the moment, we have been here for two days. Before that we were in Brisbane for 2 nights which was just a time for r and r and to sort out and book activities for the next few weeks on the East coast. Anyway, this blog is all about the previous week before we arrived in Brisbane, we spent a week in the Red Centre experiencing the Outback. On the monday we flew from Adelaide to Alice Springs. We stayed at a hostel called Annie's Place and just spent the first day getting used to the heat and getting ready for our 3 day tour on the tuesday. We had a good look around Alice Springs, an interesting little town with a large aboriginal community, which you don't ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Auckland September 3rd 2005

Okay where did we leave you? Think our last blog was to say that Elinor, Laura and Simon had arrived safetly and that they were coping with jetlag well. So 1st day in Auckland on Tuesday and the travellers managed to get down before 9amm to get breakfast, very impressive. We headed out into the town centre and straight for the sky tower, which just dominates the sky line. Spent some time viewing the whole of Auckland and beyond from the different level platforms and watch some nutters jump off on the bungy they have there. Very sunny day so the views were spectacular. The glass walkway reminded me of blackpool towers although slightly different view?! Took the free bus (big reed one) to the port and hopped onto a ferry to waiheke island. Hired a ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Bay of Plenty September 3rd 2005

Greetings from Paihia, a town on the Bay of Plenty. We're back on the N. Island for a short respite before heading off to Bangkok. Today we took advantage of free items activities prov. by the hostel. We kayaked, individually, out into the bay. We both managed to get our bums pretty wet. After eating we then took mt. bikes out for a spin on some paved and dirt roads to a somewhat disappointing waterfall. After a tasty meal of fish sticks, canned beans, and rice (I was responsible for 2nites menu), we headed across the steet to watch rugby. The good guys won! The All Blacks beat Aus. clinching the tri-nations championship. We plan to stay 1 more night here to actually relax (that was today's plan before the activities got the best of us). ... read more

hellooooo!!! well, saturday was super fun! i hired a car with bex and celia (two girls from tasmania) and we drove up to cape tribulation. cape tribulation is an area about 50km north of here maybe (not too good with the whole distance thing!) in an area called the daintree national park. its the only place in the whole big wide world where the rainforest actually meets the sea. its the most amazingly beautiful area. on the way up you have to cross the daintree river via a little mini ferry that literally takes about 2 minutes. we went on the dubuji boardwalk which is a 2km walk through the rainforest to myall beach. alas, we saw no crocodiles, cassowaries (evil dinosaur like 2m tall birdies that have a blue head and can disembowel you with ... read more

Arthur's Pass - 3.9.2005 Ranne pocasie nas velmi nepotesilo. Stale mrholilo a okolite kopce boli zatiahnute v oblakoch. A tak sme (s nemalou radostou) predlzili nas spanok o nejaku tu hodinu. Nakoniec sme vsak vybehli na kratsi track do Otira valley, ktory viedol uz k spominanenmu vrcholu Rollestone. Po kratsom uvodnom strateni turistickej znacky sme opat objavili spravny chodnik, ktory nas doviedol krasnym udolim az k upatiu vrchu Rollestone. Rollestone nas privital niekolkymi hlucnymi lavinovimy pozdravmi a my sme boli radi, ze sme tentoraz kvoli pocasiu nechali lyze v aute. Pajka dal aj par bouldrovacich pokusov a ja som si uzivala chvile s fotakom v ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Blue Mountains September 3rd 2005

Over the weekend Angela, Nick (her boy), Anne-Marie (her flatmate) and I went out to the Blue Mountains. They are called the Blue Mountains, because they are covered with eucalyptus trees, which give off a vapour which gives a blueish tinge to the region. My camera didn't take too nicely to this tinge, and proceeded to crap itself (See photo). This does provide me with a great excuse to go shopping for electronic gizmos in Singapore however. The weather was slightly less than ideal for our trip, However the effect of being up amongst the cloud was rather breath-taking. Seeing mountains and trees disappear in and out of the clouds. Being at a look out, and only being able to see 10 metres around me. Looking over the edge to over see a mist of cloud. ... read more

Greetings from Australia, the land of vegemite, kangaroos, and great surf! What can I say - I love Australia and have had the most amazing time here! I love the landscape, the dry sense of humor and the “no worries” attitude towards life, the local pubs, and even vegemite! I came here six weeks ago to work as a project leader for International Student Volunteers, an organization that brings students from the US, Canada, and the UK together to work on conservation projects throughout Australia. After two weeks of physical labor, the participants get to celebrate with a two-week long adventure tour throughout Queensland. My first two weeks, I led a group of eight students (6 American, 2 Canadian) on a Conservation Volunteers Australia Project in northern New South Wales. We spent our days tackling a ... read more

Had another argument with Lucy over breakfast but hopefully we've now got it out of our system and patched things up for good!! Bumped into a girl that was in our dorm in Rainbow Beach, who was telling us horrific tales of bed bugs (which consequently I dreamt about last night!) We met Hoyt, the guy we'd met the night before, on the ferry going over to the mainland, which was a bit creepy... he was urging me to go and visit him after Cairns, hmm, maybe not. Got the bus to Mission Beach, stopping in Cardwell for some fish and chips at a roadside café. Once again we were majorly anti-social and had a double room for ourselves which was lush, really near the beach and with a swimming pool just outside the patio doors... ... read more
