After spending two days in Arrowtown Janet and I have moved on to Te Anau. When we left Wanaka there were clouds looming in the sky and sure enough by the time we arrived in Arrowtown it had started to rain. We went to lunch at a restaurant called Saffron, which we had heard was one of the best restaurants in the world. One of the best steaks I've ever had . . . We then wandered around town for a bit trying to find a Lord of the Rings filming location that was close to the city center. On our search it started raining, but we didn't let the weather get us down. We returned to our accommodation (where the lodge our room was in was called the Oregon lodge :) to pick up Bill ... read more

Hello Everyone - Time for your next update - lucky you! Last time i wrote i was on Ko Samui and heading on to Ko Pha Ngan. Well my last night on Samui was eventful as we went out and got very drunk. The journy the following day was hellish, i have learnt my lesson never to move on with a hangover. I woke up feeling ok, so thought i would catch the early boat to Ko Pha ngan, big mistake. A rickety coach ride to the port from where i was staying in Chaweng and then a fairly dodgy boat ride where i was trying my hardest not to throw up. From there i had to get a mini bus to the beach where i could catch a long tail boat to bottle beach - ... read more

So I finally made it, I am in Australia now! Melbourne reminds me a lot of Vancouver except that it is sunny and hot unlike the 30something days of rain that I left behind. I can't say I am upset about that at all. I am living in the suburb of Fitzroy which is a lot like east van. It is filled with tons of vintage clothing shops, artsy bookstores, vegetarian restaurants, pubs, bars, the usual. I have spent way too much money here though, I can't stop this shopping addiction that I have. The women here are beautiful and they have an amazing sense of fashion. Anyways, I haven't really done anything touristy, umm we did drive out to this little surf town last weekend, Flinders, and soaked up some sun. I have put together ... read more

Well, I forgot to mention that as I was driving down the road with the fishermen I offered to by them dinner because I was so greatful to be rescued. The guide said he'd love to but it was valentines day and he had to take his wife out. Great, I thought its Valentines Day and here I am having a miserable rain soaked day from hell. Then it dawned on me it was Valentines Day here but it was only the 13th in the US. I suddenly felt better. Tomorrow would be a better day. It was. Talk about vast differences in cycling. Yesterday had been the worst riding day I've ever had. Today was one of the best days I've had riding in New Zealand. I almost had given up on riding but after ... read more

HI! Ben dus in Melbourne aangekomen.

Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Coober Pedy February 15th 2006

Rental car agents looked at us like we were going to a distant planet when we told them that we wanted to go to Coober Pedy. Many Australians never venture into the Outback. We don't quite understand why, it is such a unique place. So, with extra water, food, good maps, and a full tank of petrol we were off to the Outback!! This road trip truly was a journey into the secret, the weird, the amazing, and back to the urban. In 6 short days we saw an incredible variety of landscape, wildlife, and culture. The Secret: Our first night on the road was spent in the town of Woomera. This town did not exist on any Australian map until the late 1980s. The town existed; it was just a big secret because it was ... read more
