Well i am writing to you on my 3rd day in Sydney and i can say it has been all good but very tiring!!!! Anyway here is how our last few days went in wonderful Mellbourne. Last sunday we visited Werribe Zoo which Helen took us to with Rob which was about a half hour journey by car. It was more of an african zoo than an Australian zoo to be honest but it was still highly enjoyable. While we were there we took the Safari tour around the park which was really good we got a chance to drive past all the animals and get right up close to all of them which was a great experience. After we completed the Safari we set off to the otherside of the park to see the lions, ... read more

This is an amazing town! It a little more touristy but that happens when there is so much going on. Jason, Ryan, Jo, Jordan, Kate and I all took a road trip about 2 hr north of Lincoln to Kaikoura. First day was a little cloudy and glum, but we made the most of it by walking by the water, sitting on a pier playing gee-tar, swinging off the pier (not me but Ryan) trying to catch seagulls, trying to find cheap crayfish (new Zealand form of lobster) same price as lobster too!! We never ended up getting any (sad). But we did go to this little Irish pub out in the middle of a sheep pasture, it was okay, there was a wedding going on, we unsuccessfully tried to get in. But we did end ... read more

Hoorah! Orla has arrived in Sydney and we have hardly stopped for breath in between catching up and wandering round this fine city. We have been staying with friends/ex-colleagues of hers in Pyrmont, very close to Darling Harbour, and we have been out living it up in true Sydney fashion. Drinks at the outside Opera Bar on Friday evening mixing with the great and the beautiful after work (Opera House/Sydney Harbour and Bridge as backdrop; rather spectacular as the sun goes down); food in The Rocks - Sydney's colonial corner: you feel like you are back in the 1790s, and expect groups of convicts to wander round the corner at any moment; more drinks and food in Darling Harbour in the evening over the weekend and hanging out at Bondi and Manly Beaches during the day. ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Mornington Peninsula February 17th 2006

Continuing our holiday. The previous blog entries have looked at the Mornington Peninsular and the immediate area. I would now like to tell you about a different area on the east of the peninsular known as Western Port Bay. The bay has in it two major islands. French Island was well known as a penal colony but has since become a wildlife sanctuary. The island is accessed by boat. Once there you can walk for miles on well marked tracks or you can join one of the organised coach tours, it is advisable to book since they are very popular. I understand that many different species of birds and animals live on the island. Phillip Island is very different, being easy to get to by car, driving direct on to the island. The biggest attraction on ... read more

I managed to get a haircut in Queensland this morning & not come away with a mullet, what a relief! We walked into town & stopped off at tourist info to find out that a theatrical adaptation of Monkey would be performed in the evening & had to get directions to the theatre. We carried on to the Queensland Museum South Bank where there were good displays of Queenlands terrestrial & marine fauna as well as a great interactive Aboriginal gallery. The Queensland Cultural Centre also houses the Queensland Art Gallery where other interactive displays allow you to stick coloured dots on a white room & build structures out of white Lego bricks. The afternoon was basking in the usual Queensland heat & we had a dip in the lagoon at Streets Beach. The beach is ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Taupo February 17th 2006

Today we do the Tongariro Crossing, a 17km hike through some active volcanos! Drove to the end of the hike at Ketetahi to meet our shuttle bus which would take us to the start at Mangatepopo, allowing us to hike back to the car at our own pace. The morning is cool and cloudy but this is to our liking as the going is tough to start with with steep climbs through the rocky terrain up to Mount Ngauruhoe volcano, also known as Mount Doom in Lord Of The Rings. It is a perfectly cylindrical cone, a classic comic-book view of a volcano. As the clouds disperse and some blue sky appears we can see the summit up ahead, although we don't have time to climb it. We carry on through a large flat expanse of ... read more
