This is our home in Wollongong. We live in International House at the University of Wollongong. We are just an hour and a half away from Sydney by train. International House is convieniently located halfway between the University and the beach... we've definately been taking advantage of the location! We didn't take any photos of our rooms because they are small, dorm like, and gross and we didn't want you to feel bad for us. Just kidding! But really they are not exciting... and kind of gross. Wollongong isn't that exciting of a place to live, but its got a good location and the weather is georgeous. Here are a few pictures of the beach near our place... the campus is also beautiful and looks like a zoo. We haven't taken any pictures yet. ... read more

We spent 3 days in the bush near Alice Springs. Our trip took us to Uluru, Kata Tjuta and King's Canyon. We slept in swags (it's like a canvas cocoon) under the stars. Fine if you are not worried about snakes, spiders, dingos and huge centipedes crawling into your sleeping bag!... read more

Kayaking and Harley rides! wahoo! Got up early to do my kayaking down the creek to see thousands of fruit bats. the creek leads down to mangroves and island where the trees are literally overrun with these bats. It smells nasty cos there's so many, The guide thought it would be fun to clap and scare them up so there was thousands of fruit bats flying over us, I mean thousands...sky was absolutely full! was unbelievable! and quite alarming. After the creek we headed out the river to the sea, round a small break water to a little secluded beach, its up a headland and hard to reach by car. there we stopped for a bite to eat, the guide brought fruit...slightly odd young man but undeniably passionate bout bats abd boats! a few dolphins were ... read more

Oceania » Fiji » Mamanuca Islands February 24th 2006

It was so tough being in Sydney that Orla and I decided we needed a week in Fiji, so we duly flew to Nadi with no plans and no place to stay and hoped that we would have a Pacific adventure. We were not far wrong with all sorts of wrangling and comedy of errors including missing boats, seasickness (not us, thank goodness!), torrential Pacific downpours and being ripped off by (probably) well-meaning, but unclear, travel agents. However, it was all part of enjoying "Fiji time" i.e. being so laid back we were horizontal and you couldn't help but have a great time on these beautiful islands: Treasure Island, Musket Cove on Malololailai, and Sonaisali. We felt almost like the Famous Five given the names but didn't think that George, Anne, Julian, Dick and Timmy the ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Glaciers February 24th 2006

Drove further down the west coast, into the Glacier Country. In winter this area has ski and snow resorts, but all year through the glaciers of Franz Josef and Fox stay solid, and are in fact getting bigger. We booked a glacier walk for the next day and headed on a couple of local walks. We checked out the Canavans Knob Walk, which took us through a little rainforest to a great view of the mountains, and the Tatare Tunnels Walk. The walk was really nice, but the tunnel disappointing. We were told we should take a torch for the 20min walk in the pitch black, wet tunnel to see glow worms. 5 mins in Debs gave up with very wet trainers, and Spen walked the whole length without seeing any! ... read more

Sorry about the delayed message everyone, my internet just was just hooked up today. Well it’s official, I’m at school in Australia. Oh sorry, Uni, they don’t like the word school, it only means elementary school to them, and since I look like I could be in elementary school, it just throws everyone off. So I’m at “Uni”, just arrived today and whoever said Perth was picturesque was a genius. It is so damn beautiful here, it makes the rest of Australia look like the ghetto, no offense to all my friends over on the east coast. Alright so before I go on gushing and make everyone vomit, I’ll just quickly reminisce on the rest of my Sydney experience. So the second day we were in Sydney, Char and I dropped off Becca at the university ... read more

Well I'm sitting here wondering whether I'll ever walk again. We just did this "day walk" which involved climbing a volcano after a 4am start. My knees went about halfway through the descent, so I just had to do a very sporty high speed hobble, inlcuding falling flat on my face at one point and being carried in a very fetching fireman's lift position down some of the slopes. I'm such an action girl! Anyway, Auckland was great, not least because Jeff who I did the flying scholarship with 10 years ago put me up in his naval base. It took a bit of time to readapt myself to military life - but the sight of young men doing drill outside my room at 8am every day certainly helped. Got to go on Jeff's warship, but ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Otago » Oamaru February 24th 2006

24 February Queenstown is the home of Bungy jumping. So early this morning we headed out for the bridge at Kuwarau Bridge, where it all started. They start jumping at 9:00 am. We got there shortly thereafter. The place was already busy. They fasten you around the ankles, but there is an extra harness which goes around your waist and thighs. If you want, they will dunk your head in the river, but most people don’t want it. When you are finished bouncing around a small row boat comes over to get you - they pull you in and un-hook you. It was really quite cold there today, and one girl jumped twice with only her bra and jeans. So, did we or did we not jump? Now, this evening we are in Oamaru on the ... read more

Well after new years returned up to Darwin, with the nice truck driver that dropped me down there, to fetch car.... as you know Jess couldn't join me but we've kept in touch loads and I'm glad.... you girls would love her honestly! So drove my baby car all the way 1600kilometres in 24hours (stopping to swat some mozzies in my car and sleeping for about two hours). Got back to Mount Isa..... slept loads. Tried to find a job as I'd run out of money.... had option of working on a cattle farm in longreach or even with Sam so headed down to Longreach and spent weekend with Sam. Monday I headed to cattle farm.... Started work in afternoon hovering whole house and then helped cook dinner etc Next day fed chooks (chickens), washed clothes, ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Byron Bay February 24th 2006
