Blue Lagoon On the Blue Lagoon with Ed and Jutta, a homestay for six people which is a boat moving about the Pelorus Sounds. A naturist idyll. No need for clothes for three days taking in kayaking, swimming in some amazingly warm waters, walking the Nydia Track (to meet new people who were joining us for a night) and eating some good food. Ed looks like a big giant Kiwi in his photos just returned from shooting some wild pigs and collecting 10kg snapper from the sound. However, he plays the outdoor man for what it is worth but he is a great host with a nice line in jokes and good humour making everyone like him a lot. He also took us to collect fresh mussels and oysters from the edge of the shore where ... read more

I found my own little wonderland today. At 10 am I set out for the train complete with picnic...cheese and salad sandwiches...and jumped on the 2hour train to Katoomba in the Blue Mountains...very beautiful From the station its a hike along the road, maybe 1.5miles, to Echo point....tourist central. almost got photographed by all the oriental coach tours but managed to slip off down a trail and found myself alone...The trails and bush walks lead all the way round a huge sandstone valley, with cliffs and waterfalls and lookouts. Every now and then there would be another couple of people armed with their cameras but mostly I had the trail to myself. The sun was shining but it was a little hazy. Had my picnic at a secluded little lookout with spectacular panoramas. will get the ... read more

A horrendous hangover saw me and the boy wonder (Adam), trudge down to Central station at ridiculous-o'clock in the afternoon, I say ridiculous because the aim was to get out of Sydney as early as possible to get the train up to the Blue Mountains and get in two full days of bushwalking, but the Beer Monkey had other ideas and had obviously drugged us the night before and been jumping up and down on our heads as we slept. With our loaded backpacks, and thumping headaches and the standard hangover panacea - McDonalds - we journeyed up to Katoomba. In usual fashion, we had no idea where we were going, other than a train station, but I'm starting to learn that flying by the seat of your pants isn't always destined for failure, and sure ... read more

Kia Ora! (original start, I'm sure) We've landed - a mere 18,000km from home - and soon as we stepped out of the airport we were greeted with flowers. Who told them we were coming? OK, so it's National Flower Week and everyone's getting the same treatment - but it felt like good karma. The flight(s) were great - managed to sleep a lot - as well as eat and drink the equivalent of 3 days food in 27 hours - must've been the time difference kicking in. Two days in Christchurch to acclimatise. Did this pretty well. Our room wasn't ready when we arrived at the hotel so we were found another. It turned out to be a 2-bed, 2-bath suite with lounge, dining room and kitchen in the Old Government Buildings. Huge - with ... read more

So it was time to say goodbye to Australia last week but boy did I do it in style! My friends Nick & Mehal who I was staying with had been invited to a 'Sporn' fancy dress party, which was basically under the theme of sports star or porn star. The party was in this huge house in Bondi so you can imagine that a lot of people go to an effort to impress, which meant I had to spend my Saturday afternoon trailing around charity shops looking for some kind of budget outfit! I finally came across a red racing jacket and cap, so decided to go as a formula one racing driver/life guard as I only had Nick's red shorts to wear... yep interesting combination but I also wore a 70's porn moustache so ... read more

We move on to Wellington on the south coast of the North Island and stay at Wildlife House Backpackers, a big zebra-striped building, hard to miss. The bus journey takes us through rolling green hills and beautiful scenery all the way. That evening we plan the next section of our trip on the South Island by booking ferry tickets and a hire car which we will pick up in Picton.... read more

G'day from the sun drenched, golden beached happy go lucky whale of a nation that is Oz...and it is huge (and boy do they drink beer here! Just google a Darwin Stubby and you'll see what I mean). So where does one start with such a place...well we started in Sydney which Mel and I both found a little anticlimactic (no sniggering from the back of the class please). Yes there is the Opera House, the Harbour Bridge and the Botanical Gardens but then it became very similar to London and as we found out there is so much more to discover elswhere in Australia. From Sydney we flew up to Brisbane and checked out some of the Coast to the South of the city. Byron Bay was ok and Surfers Paradise was great fun! We ... read more
