Arrived into Christchurch in the afternoon and arranged to meet up with my friend Nick who also used to live in Dubai. We went out to the strip which is right in the centre of town and lined with bars. We hung out at sticky fingers and di lusso. The funny thing about Christchurch is because its reasonably small everyone seems to know everyone. Kinda scary really! We decided we would go out for a drive to Lyttleton (about forty five minutes away) which is the main port where all the boats come in. There wasn't much going on but we found this little funky bar with a few drunken people and russian sailors. Not the sort of place i would like to hang out on my own, put it that way. Stayed for a drink ... read more

Today is the final day of fun and frollicks in a favourite car. Having woken to find a council dude prowling the carpark we decided to make our get away. We took our time coming home, a nice convoluted route past Lake Cootharaba...huge but brown...nice! then the Louis Bazzo Drive (!) lead us north to Kin Kin, which I think must be officially australia's quaintest town. Proper, hicksville country town with a very old traditional Hotel and a general store. The school was built in 1911 and is a stunning building. Locals were genuinely shocked at the sight of tourists and declared loudly that we must be mad to come here on purpose. But we liked it. The nearer to home we got the less keen we were to keep going. Parting with the car would ... read more

Caught the 8:01 train out to Upper Ferntree Gully, spoke to the ranger, bought some maps and supplies and have been bushwalking happily for the last 4 hours. Just stopped for lunch; munching on my poppy-seed bagel, with chicken, schnitzel, spinich, cheese and sundried tomatoes - oooo! It's been a lovely day so far. Need to find out how to get home, whether I can walk on further and get a bus back or whether I need to turn back after lunch for the return journey. It's been a mostly forest walk and there haven't been many spectacular views or huge mountains, but the 1000 steps were cool, (although there were only 867). Mmm, tuna, feta and rocket is much tastier! Gorgeous, 15:13 - The peak of Mount Dandenong! FHEW! I just wandered out of the bush ... read more

24 March 2006, Sydney We have had two fantastic full days in Sydney. We landed here just after lunch time on Wednesday. In order to get our bearings we rode the monorail a couple times around and then descended to investigate and explore Darling Harbour. Yesterday was full of adventure. We started the morning at the Opera House. It really is a majestic and fascinating structure. We walked all around it and then went in and bought tickets to last night’s concert in the biggest concert hall (more on the concert later). The outside of the opera house is all tiled, which you can’t tell from pictures, and it houses the big concert hall, several smaller concert halls, theaters of several sizes. Then it was off to “the bridge”- that is the great Sydney Harbour Bridge. ... read more

From Curio Bay we travelled to Te Anau for the night, passing on the way Invercargill and the gorgeous Lake Manapouri. From Te Anau I went to Milford Sound for a 2 hour fiord cruise. This time the weather gods were on my side and it was utterly fantastic. Again, I feel I cannot justly describe Milford Sound. It was quite simply majestic. Massive towers of rock rising from the sea bed having been carved out over a million years by six ice ages and many many glaciers. Technically this means it is not a "sound" at all, but is a fiord. Milford is just one of several fiords in the aptly named area of Fiordland, yet another World Heritage area.... read more

Just needed to get some photos off to all of our fans! Paris is going to school in Whangaparoa, New Zealand for a month. He has to wear a uniform and his school is called a college; Orewa College. He is in 10th grade which is equivelent to the 9th grade in the states. He is living with our friends Angela and David Howie and their two daughters, Nancy (16) and Anna (11). We will be picking him up again in a few years! The following photos are of Natalie, David and I (Christie) traveling on the North Island. We drove from Auckland to the northern tip of the island and back down to the southern tip. Now we are in Queenstown getting ready to do the Routeburn Track which is a 3 day hut trip. ... read more

So here I am... 1 hour before being whisked off to the airport... Wondering what the hell I'm doing... :s As I finished packing about half hour ago (yes, I am still in the habit of leaving important things to the last possible minute!!), I weighed my previously reasonably light 6.5kg backpack, only to discover it had grown substantially more plump on a diet of clothes, toiletries and other essentials to get me through the months ahead...that is, I am now the proud owner of an 11kg monster- not to mention the 3.5kg daypack... Grand total: 14.5kgs. Hmmm... Decided to take a walk up the street and back to see if I could handle it. All I can say is "Aaarrrrgh!!! HELP!!!" I am definitely reconsidering all those offers of people acting as my pack horse ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Bundaberg March 24th 2006

Bundaberg is famous for its Rum, So I thought it rude not to pay the distillery a visit. Having left my camera, watch and everything else in a locker to prevent me blowing the plant up with a miniscule spark, and having donned some sexy rented shoes (which I swear offer less protection than my fairly sturdy sandals...) I was off on the tour. The guides were interesting enough, but their sense of humour appeared to a generation gone by... a long time ago. Their attempts to 'get down with the kids' were shocking, and possibly even illegal! Cunningly the tour ended with a double tasting in which I tried Bundaberg Dark And Stormy (Bundaberg Rum w/ Bundaberg Ginger Beer) and Bundaberg Royal Liquer with cream (Rum, Sugar, Coffee, Sugar, Chocolate, Sugar). It was only after ... read more
