Days 29 & 30 26-27 February - Te Anau & Fjordland - South Island, New Zealand The weather wasn’t encouraging, nor was the forecast. You come all this way to one of the most breathtaking areas of the world and it’s misty, drizzly and you can’t see much beyond the Sunny’s bonnet. That’s partly because it’s 7 in the morning. Dawn hasn’t quite broken and eyelids are still at half-mast after not enough sleep. We begin to say the unsayable to each other: Is this going to be worth it? We’re setting off to do the 120km from Te Anau to Milford Sound to catch the cruise boat to see the place everyone says is unmissable. Well, it may be unmissable, but we’re going to miss it cos you can’t see a bloody thing for the ... read more

Queenstown to Milford Sound - 307kms (expected driving time 5hrs without any stops). It was going to take us forever as there is a lot to see on that road. The aim is to get to Milford and book a cruise when we get there and hopefully they arent fully booked coz that would really suck big time. So we checked out of our hostel and set off at 8am towards Milford Sounds. First stop - just outside Queenstown to take in the splendid view of the Remarkable mountains, their tops covered in clouds. The are indeed quite remarkable hence the name and I suppose think must look more remarklable covered in snow. Second stop - Te Anau. Half way between Queenstown and Milford and our snack stop. There was nothing much to see between Queenstown ... read more

Milford Sound...a simple fact...the longer they haven't had any rain is 9 days in a row! This is the wettest place of New Zealand....a green country! Second fact...277 km from Queenstown by road...around 75km if you treck...well, once again...not an option with a 6 and 8 years old. From Te Anau, last big village with 1300 people living there....there is 120km to Milford Sound, and not a single petrol station...so be ready. But before all...if there is no rain, there are less waterfalls...and if there is rain, there are waterfalls! We had rain! One more fact, a Sound doesn't mean anything, it's a kiwi word...it should be call the Milford Fjord...know you know what we are speaking of. Made our way late afternoon from Queenstown after doing the luge. Stop in Te Anau to play ... read more

Bloody shared rooms are starting to get on my testicles. We had one wanker crash in at 2am and proceed to snore like a donkey and fart really loudly. Then an inebriate tosser was thrown in by his mates, to find his own way to the top bunk at 3am. I am normally a nice person and if people are asleep let them sleep, but these two ball bags didn;t deserve it so at half 7 i was slamming the door rustling plastic bags and dropping things, opening the curtains and leaving the light. Stich that! The bus arrived at 10am and we found two seats right by the door for quick exits! It helps when you have 50 people piling off a bus into the smallest cafe in the world. The drive there was aboslutely ... read more

... read more

Hello Everyone,. Milford sound was out of this world. Mountains rising straight up out of the water with waterfalls cascading down. The road there was awesome too with lot of cliffs with waterfalls. We took a boat trip around the Sound and it was raining the whole time. But afterall it is a rainforest, with an average of 7 meters a year. (40 inches to a meter, can you figure it out?. Even though it was raining it was still beautiful and without the rain there would not have been so many waterfalls. There was so much greenery and one would expect there to be a scent of pine trees, but pine and fir trees are not native to this country. There were different kinds of beech trees. The mountain meadows were empty of mammals unlike ... read more

the next morning it was up bright and early and off to milford sound for our overnight boat trip. we headed out of queenstown and were on our way! then we stopped for some ridiculous add on train ride. then we stopped again in a random housing development. then again for some other random reason. basically what probably could have been done in a couple of hours was stretched to seven (yes, this is our reflection on tours in Australia and NZ - tours are for people who think life is a journey and would like to spend more time getting to their destination; they are not for people like us who want to spend more time at the destination). anyhow, we had a slightly bitter driver who's commentary reflected the waning tourist economy and missed ... read more
