29th May 2009 Unfortunately another day lost to travel, after 5 hours driving we arrived in Te Anau. After finding out about cruises around Milford Sound, we ended up visiting a bird sanctuary. Slight unimpressed and extremely tired from our adventure yesterday we ended up having a nap. Our nap became so long that we the supermarket had closed by the time we woke up. This forced us to go out for an Italian meal, at least we didn't have to cook. 30th May 2009 It was another 2 hour drive along the world famous Milford road until we reached Milford Sounds. The views certainly took the sting out of the drive. Along the way there were several signs warning us of a need for snow chains, ignoring the signs we proceeded without them. As there ... read more

july 15th, 2009: had an early start in the morning. first tip is to avoid booking milford sound tours online. just do it when you arrive in new zealand. believe me, they've got tons of options and the prices are usually cheaper. in addition to better rates, you get to use all the discount coupons you get for free from brochures available at airports and hotels. if you do not know where and how to get these brochures, just go to the airport information desk and/or the hotel concierge. it is a long drive going back and forth from queenstown, so be prepared to travel on the bus for 5-6 hours before getting on your 2-3 hour cruise. some of the things you expect to see: dolphins, albatross, seals and lots of water falls. i advise ... read more

The first thing you will notice about this blog title is that I thought about it in the same train of thought that I thought of the Fox Glacier one. The second thing is the use of the world sound to mean good. I hasten to add, this is not part of my usual vocabulary, but it did seem appropriate in this instance. I went from Queenstown to Milford Sound with a company known as Eco-Tours. Why don't you try and guess why I chose them above the myriad of other companies that run buses there. While you're thinking, I'll just ramble on about how while most companies leave Queenstown at 6.30am, Eco Tours leave at 8.30am. Anyway, welcome back thinkers, did you guess the reason yet? The first couple of hours between Queenstown and Te ... read more

Day 79 (Wednesday 08/07/09, NJJ) Up at 7.30am. Picked up at 8.10am for our day trip to Milford Sound. The scenery on the journey along the Milford Road, from Te Anau to Milford Sound, was stunning. We passed through tussock country, native bush, alpine mountains and the Homer Tunnel. It was very frosty for the early part of the journey and this made the view even more beautiful. We thought Te Anau Downs and Mirror Lakes were amazing but we were told the best was yet to come. We arrived at Milford Sound by 11am in time to board the Milford Sound cruise, 1 hr 40 mins out on the fiord. We had our complementary packed lunch on the boat and Jay even had a cup of tea to warm up. The scenery was superb. Mitre ... read more

As there is nowhere to stay at the Milford Sound, the nearest place to stop is Te Anau. This is where our criminal life began. The Great Lakes Holiday Park had good facilities and a lovely TV room with a roaring log fire and so this was the place where we attempted our first blag at only paying for one of us to stay, so whilst Geen did the bizz booking in etc, yours truly hid out in the back and pretended she was invisible. Result! We were in, paying only $13.50 instead of $26. Which made us feel somewhat guilty, considering the friendliness of the site managers, but hey, we got a budget to consider! We booked with the Milford Adventurer to take us on a 2 hour cruise out to the Sound. Whilst freezing ... read more

23/06/09 Tuesday Day 312 Crazy early start this morning. Our bus is at 7.15am and we would be in Milford sound around 1.15pm. The bus was full as soon as we picked up the last people. Also the bus driver made everyone sit in the bus starting from the front seats. Luckily we got the front seats. The only bad thing is that there’s no leg room. No sooner had we left when we had a casualty! This one decided to become sick and the roads hadn’t even become windy yet. So she sat in the jump seat in the front of the bus and decided to spew into a plastic bag every so often. She said to the driver that she doesn’t like windy roads. He said that if you don’t like the roads now, ... read more

So back down to earth with a bump. After leaving the Remarkables Lodge, we headed south then west and arrived at a place called Te Anau - this was the last proper town before heading on to Milford Sound. After our night at a campsite, we woke up to a murky, overcast morning. While filling up with petrol, we checked about the road to Milford as we’d heard that it was compulsory to carry snow chains during particular winter months of the year. However, on asking the attendant, no snow chains were required today. I felt better after hearing that as I didn’t relish the thought of being stuck out in Milford Sound in a massive snow storm. So we drove north out of Te Anau wondering what we would find - we’d been told that ... read more

A 12 hour day trip to Milford sound is apparently one of the highlights of New Zealand, so we booked on, and it was!!!! We set off on a long coach journey down to Milford at 7am and basically enjoyed the scenery, stopping off at various points along the way for photos. We also got to pass through the Homer Tunnel which was dug out of the mountains years ago, very impressive. We arrived at the boat at 12.30 and were given a free lunch and a brew before we set off. The boat journey was just under 2 hours through the fjordland and was absolutely spectacular. It was really cold, but i spent most of the time on top deck, as did most people. We got a really good day, nice sunshine, and just a ... read more

We arrived in Te Anau, driving from Queenstown, the evening before. Te Anau is quiet and small... even with it being the height of tourist season and everything booked up, it was still calm. I guess they only have a very limited capacity of hotel rooms. Te Anau is at the edge of Fiordland National Park (the largest national park in NZ and one of the largest in the world) and next to Lake Te Anau. It is a favorite spot to stay before heading into Fiordland. In the morning, we were picked up by a large van by Fiordland Wilderness Experience for a sea kayak tour of Milford Sound. I think we were the last ones to be picked up and I ended up sitting in the middle front seat between our two guides (made ... read more

Te Anau to Milford On the Wednesday before Easter Weekend, we got our third flatmate. His name is Dan and he is from Vancouver. He is a really easy going guy who has worked a harvest in the Okanoggan in BC. He also studied for a year at an intensive wine program in Adelaide, Australia. So now the house is complete. On the Thursday before Easter Weekend, we all went to a party for the cellar rats in the Cromwell area. It was a lot of fun. I tasted some really amazing wines and some that I wanted to dump as soon as I smelled them. There were also some pretty good sausages. I met some really fun people and it was a great time. On Good Friday, which is a public holiday here, Dan, Alina, ... read more
