Sunday 21st November: I've not blogged for a couple of days, as you know I'm living it up in Australia but as I've not finished the New Zealand blog; and there's more, I'll continue. Sunday early morning start as this is the day we intend to get to Milford Sound. Because you can't get direct to M.S. very few roads you have to travel south to go north west. After about an hour and a half of early morning driving which we take in turns, we came upon Te Anau a very picturesque fiord commercial small town. The lake Te Anua is the largest in the south island 61km (938 miles) and 417m (91,370 ft) deep all the result of glacial action. Many people loke ourselves were heading for Milford Sound but first stopped off at ... read more

Monday 8th November We leave Franz Josef and head South East for Queenstown but firstly we stop for morning tea at Lake Matheson often called the mirror lake. Its at the base of the Southern Alps which provides the lake with spectacular reflections. While Jill was having breakfast at the cafe I did the 15 minute walk round to the Lake only to be a wee bit disappointed as it was a bit windy and cloudy so the mirror shot wasn’t as good as you could imagine it to be. Nevertheless it was a fine walk and I enjoyed the forest colours which are changing from spring to summer and also theres and there is lots of calming sounds of chirping and crowing as your stroll along the beaten path. As we head inland away from ... read more

On the drive to Milford Sound for our overnight boat cruise, we were both thinking and talking about the skydives we had done that morning in Queenstown and how we were both so happy we had done them, as well as taking in the great scenery around us. About 2 hours after leaving QT we stopped in a town called Te Anau (which is halfway between there and Milford Sound) for some lunch and to see the main attraction of this town - the huge blue lake. Now I know we have seen a lot of lakes here and you may think we are getting bored of them, but these lakes are incredible - huge and so blue, most of the time with a shingle shore line so they look like a beach and they are ... read more

Having cut Queenstown short by a day or two due to the race against the changing weather we made the drive to Te Anau where we stayed the night at a beautiful lakeside campsite. The next day our Milford adventure started. We had booked ourselves on an overnight cruise on the sound, being early on in the summer season we got a discount, so our cruise only cost us $133 each. Not bad for a nights accomodation, a slap up evening meal, a full cooked breakfast and kayaking to boot. Anyway, first was the drive to Milford itself which is stunning, 120km's through the Fiordland National Park. On the road we stopped at the mirror lakes which gave us some great reflections of the mountains, although our mirror image was slightly distorted by a few cheeky ... read more

As most of you know, I’ve travelled to quite a few places in my life. I’ve been all over the show: from the magical Ruwenzori Mountains of Uganda and Congo to the fantastic Pantanal and Amazon river in Brasil, from the lovely islands of Indonesia to the ancient cities of Europe, from the spectacular South of Chile to the grandiose North of Iceland. On all these journeys, of course, I have seen some pretty marvelous spots, some of them on my own face. I have a particular fondness for mountain landscapes. There’s just something endlessly mysterious about them for me. Some of the most memorable moments in my life have been staring up at some distant peak and seeing some landscape there that conjured up a feeling of belonging and mythical memory inside me. It’s more ... read more

First of all, congratulations again to Fem and John on the arrival of baby Isabella! So we left you last when we had just arrived in Queenstown, the adventure and extreme sports capital of New Zealand. First of all lets talk about the food. For any backpacker in New Zealand, Queenstown is synonymous with the Fergburger. After extreme sports and extreme drinking, extreme eating is a must. These burgers will sate even the most mammoth of appetites. The Big Al alone could feed an entire 3rd world country for a week. Since we were trying to avoid leaping off high objects attached to elastic in an effort to stop spending money so rapidly we still had to get the adrenaline pumping somehow and headed into the mountains to Cardrona to try snow boarding. We took two ... read more

Back on the stray bus. This time there was only a few of us, 14 I think. So smaller group which was cool. Our first stop was Te Anau. It’s a small town right on a lake. This is when our group started to suck haha. We dropped 2 girls off and picked up the most annoying irritating german guy in the world. For some reason he chose to sit in front of me. Pictures He NEVER stopped talking. He had to tell me his whole trip and how awesome everything is and was telling me all about parts of New Zealand I’ve already been to. I was trying my hardest to be nice and was just looking out the window trying to ignore him or just smile and nod but he WOULD NOT shut up!!! ... read more

OK. Now we are getting into the good stuff. Fjordland, Milford Sound, the Great Walks, the Catlins. Welcome to Southland, the southernmost section of the South Island. Any further south and you are on your way to Antarctica. Since leaving Christchurch, I lived out of my van or in the backcountry each night for two weeks. Reasonably, it’s taken a little time to fully get into the groove of life in a van—to have everything in the right place and to develop routines to get things done quickly. I’m driving a Toyota Liteace, which must be the smallest minivan ever conceived. When the couch is turned into the bed, there is no room for anything else. For a day or two, life without luxuries was an adjustment. But that was it. I LOVE living out of ... read more
