In New Zealand we encountered a lot of new things like the fruits Feijoa and Tamarillo, very yummy, and driving on the other side of the road.  I have never been so nervous and I'm still getting use to it.  Everytime we make a turn we say 'sharp left' or 'WIDE right.' In the north Island we spent New Years in a crowded Maori bar with a bunch of island girls we met at our hotel.  It was miles of fun, as they'd say here (even though they use kilometers).  Yesterday we saw the Waitomo caves, filled with glow worms which aren't worms at all but look like a starry night inside a dark cave.  It was unreal.  Then we went to Rotorua to see the Tewhakarewarewatangaoleopetauaawahaio geothermal park.  It took ten minutes for our guide ... read more

Milford & Doubtful Sounds Onwards we go in our mean green camping machine! We left Wanaka and headed to Te Anau which would be our starting point for our drive to Milford Sound. We held up in the Fat Duck cafe by the fire which was most welcome, our cafe/pub criteria are: (1) Fire; (2) No drafts or overly loud music; (3) Good draft beer selection (that one is Will's only) - what do you mean we have bypassed middle age and gone straight to our twilight years! The drive to Milford was great, we climbed up and over the mountains via the long tunnel which saw much of the area covered with ice and fog. We passed lakes which reflected the near by mountains and we also saw our first Kea parrot hanging out in ... read more

The last week in Queenstown was definitely an adventurous one. The week included a couple of casino nights, another intense hockey game in the rink and the highlight of the week was definitely the trip to Milford Sound. Jon and I joined two of our roommates (Joe and Des) on a road trip down the windy roads to take a cruise around the Milford Sound area. During the car ride down we played lots of typical car games and took our time getting there to spend the night stopping on the side of the road jumping around for photos before the cruise in the morning. The hostel we stayed at was called “the Lodge” which was a quiet peaceful place until we arrived. We took over the lounge playing cranium and made the most delicious nachos ... read more

Week 3 The drive to Milford Sound was a beautiful one and we were not sure if the cloud that had hampered the walk yesterday would hang around and ruin the chances of doing the boat trip through the sound. When we emerged from the Homer Tunnel the cloud seemed to be lifting so we were all excited that the boat trip was now a certainty. The boat trip was truly outstanding; we saw loads of beautiful waterfalls coming down from the mountains, Mitre Peak and went out to sea briefly which meant we had an excellent view of the sound. On the way back in we stopped at Seal Rock and saw baby fur seals sunbathing and the boat went right under a waterfall, luckily we were inside so didn’t get soaked but others braved ... read more

We are up at 05:30; we make a cup of tea/coffee before going to wait for the bus, which will pick us up at 06:30. It feels really cold today; I do not wear shorts for the first time in two months, but go for the long trousers. We also have on sweaters and take our waterproofs with us. Di does not really warm up until around lunchtime The bus turns up on time and makes some more pick-ups in Queenstown. We then set off, as it is dark and not much to see, we catch up on a bit of sleep. We drive for two hours to get to Te Anau, where we stop for 30 mins for breakfast and pick up another couple of passengers. It will be another two hours to reach Milford ... read more

Day 8 – Monday the 21st of March We’re starting to feel the ouch from our “slap a Camper “game. It’s getting more and more vicious, soon the bruises will begin to appear. But oh so much fun! After arriving late into Te Anau we woke early and set off up to the Milford Sound to make it in time for our cruise. (Another 101 Must Do for Kiwis) Renee did most of the driving today until the last windy roads. Was a very picturesque drive, through avenues of trees and along the shores of several lakes and then finally winding down the mountains into the sound. Part of the drive down the mountain included passing through an amazing tunnel which was dug out of the mountain. It gave the feeling of having only been mined ... read more

Edited to add: video at Milford Sound airport We got up really early and headed out to get the bus for Milford Sound. The trip itself is pretty long, about 4 hours. We stopped off at Te Anau and this is where we would be staying for one night when the bus came back from Milford Sound (or so we thought). When we got to Milford Sound, the weather was spectacular. The water was as flat as a pancake and the ship that we would be getting on looked amazing. 3 decks and loads of space for you to wonder about and look at everything that was on offer. There were various waterfalls, some seals and a close encounter with a waterfall where we all got a bit wet. The photos hopefully do the place some ... read more
