I landed in New Zealand on Wednesday night and made my way to the Skyway Lodge - a backpackers place near the Airport just on the outskirts of Auckland. I found Jonathan eagerly awaiting my arrival. We spent our last night in New Zealand looking at trip photos and videos and shared a feast from Dominos. It was hard to believe that we were getting on an airplane in the morning the past 4 months seem to have disappeared somewhere. We checked in at the airport and received our boarding passes everything was running smoothly until we hit the security check point. Jon was escorted to the side not once but twice and his bag was searched while I stood laughing at him. Then at the next security point he was taken down a different isle ... read more

Well I finally made it to Melbourne and arrived on the girls front door step at 1:30am. (3 flights later) Kendra came running out to greet me and we stayed up chatting till the wee morning hours. It was an exhausting day but the disaster at the airport due to the intense fog in Queenstown was all worth it. Friday Kendra took the day off and we went to the CBD (central business district) and hopped on the free visitor tour bus that goes around Melbourne. Population is about 4 million here and the city is absolutely massive so I experienced a bit of culture shock coming over from the small town of Queenstown. That night Alicia and Lindsey met us at the footy game where we attempted to learn the new game. The crowds were ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Milford Sound May 26th 2011

The last week in Queenstown was definitely an adventurous one. The week included a couple of casino nights, another intense hockey game in the rink and the highlight of the week was definitely the trip to Milford Sound. Jon and I joined two of our roommates (Joe and Des) on a road trip down the windy roads to take a cruise around the Milford Sound area. During the car ride down we played lots of typical car games and took our time getting there to spend the night stopping on the side of the road jumping around for photos before the cruise in the morning. The hostel we stayed at was called “the Lodge” which was a quiet peaceful place until we arrived. We took over the lounge playing cranium and made the most delicious nachos ... read more

Adventures Queenstown has been our home for the past 3 weeks. Hard to believe we have been here for that long already time has been flying by. The scenery is absolutely stunning - 360 degree view of mountains, our hostel has a view of the lake and the sun has been shinning! The town is slowing transferring into a ski town all the bike stores are become ski rental shops and its cooling down a bit here. The crew at the hostel has been incredible. We are in a 6 bed dorm with great roommates! I feel like I am back in first year university in Queenstown. Everyday of the week there is something different to do in town. Lots of people singing in the streets and comedy shows on the pier. There is a Saturday ... read more

We made the decision to head back to the South Island while we were in Wellington and to head towards one of our favourite spots - Queenstown. Wellington was windy and cold (surprise! surprise!) We boarded the Interislander ferry popped a few gravel pills (bit of a rocky boat ride) for the 3rd time and headed over to Picton to begin the trek south. We were lucky enough to run into a few friends from Paradiso (Nelson) at this hostel and we spent the night in a beautiful tree house in the backyard of the hostel and at a hilarious Irish pub in town catching up. Decided to tackle the trip down the east coast on the bus and Christchurch was the first stop. We arrived late at night and the central business district is ... read more

The final days in Raglan were absolutely beautiful. We spent the days down at the beach and continued the surfing adventure. I finally rode my first wave and it was amazing definitely worth being tossed around by the Tasman Sea. We switched hostels and moved up further into the mountains near Manu Bay for the last two nights. (Manu Bay is where the experienced surfers ride the waves – so we just watched from the top of the hill) This hostel was made up of old train carriages and the bunk beds were inside the cabooses. The main kitchen and lounge area was made to look like a train station. The pictures don’t really do it justice but just try to picture the most beautiful mountain overlooking the Tasman Sea beach at sunset… unreal! We ... read more

The Tongariro Crossing we finally attempted just outside of Taupo. We departed at 5:30am from the hostel and heading to the volcano trek. Didn’t really know what we were getting ourselves into I don’t believe. It was super windy and I was glad I had mittens. This was definitely one of the hardest hikes I have ever been on. It was a 19 km trek across craters, these beautiful emerald lakes and then finally through a tropical forest. Jon and I split up on the trek so that he could climb Mount Doom (Devil’s staircase took me out and so I decided not to do the bonus 3 hour side trek with Jon) On the day Jon climbed the volcano, famous from LOTR, there was a guy who broke his leg from a boulder sliding ... read more

Rotorura – or “Rotten”rura was the next stop of the kiwi bus. It is rotten because it smells like rotting eggs due to the sulphur in the air. This area is full of geothermal activity (Jon’s family – he was pretty excited like a kid on Christmas) some of the highlights were seeing geysers go off and active mud pools as well as the kiwi bird sighting. Our entire bus had the chance to go luging and we all raced down the hills and there were some serious wipe outs it was at the top of the gondola so the view would have been beautiful if it wasn’t pouring rain! At night I went to a Maori Culture evening. It was a dinner show one of my favourite activities I have done in NZ. There ... read more

Travel Updates: The Kiwi Bus picked us up in Wellington on St. Patrick’s Day. We spent St. Patrick’s Day in Taupo, we played some Frisbee (beersby) down by the water and then went on a mini pub crawl at night. It was a fun night but definitely not the same as celebrating at home. We ventured on the bus again the next day way too early (The Kiwi Bus loves departing at 7 or 7:30 so the alarm keeps going off before 7 am which is not cool) Auckland was just a quick stop we just tried to get some sleep before heading north to Paihia in the Bay of Islands. We went on a waterfall hike for a couple of hours with our new friends Emma (Ireland) and Jason (England) who we spent the next ... read more

Well we attended our first rugby game ever in Nelson. It was the Christchurch team because they have been temporarily located and they are apparently the best team to watch. A few of their players will be in the World Cup in September including the rugby version of our Sydney Crosby. The game was great it was a mini Superbowl the way that it felt. A great opening show with horses and helicopters. We mostly understood the game thanks to our roommate Allister who taught us about the game. So we can check that off the must do list in NZ. On Saturday we did a two night road trip up to Abel Tasman to stay at the barn one more time. Our room this time had a view of the ocean and there were ... read more
