Well I finally made it to Melbourne and arrived on the girls front door step at 1:30am. (3 flights later) Kendra came running out to greet me and we stayed up chatting till the wee morning hours. It was an exhausting day but the disaster at the airport due to the intense fog in Queenstown was all worth it.
Friday Kendra took the day off and we went to the CBD (central business district) and hopped on the free visitor tour bus that goes around Melbourne. Population is about 4 million here and the city is absolutely massive so I experienced a bit of culture shock coming over from the small town of Queenstown. That night Alicia and Lindsey met us at the footy game where we attempted to learn the new game. The crowds were absolutely wild. Our team the demons lost but we still wore the devil horns proudly. The biggest surprise of the night was a performance by Olivia Newtown John she sang a few songs before the game including “you’re the one that I want” from grease with a footy player dressed up as Danny Zucco.
On Saturday Kendra, Alicia and I headed in to town to
Costco (the girls fav activity on a Saturday) to pick up supplies for the week. It turned into a full day mission because we stopped off in St Kilda a suburb next to where the girls live to go to Luna park which is a beach area with carnival rides. It was quiet at the beach but it was absolutely beautiful and I wish I was here to go down in the summer time. It was Lindsey's Birthday this past week so we went out to celebrate at the casino (which was massive and everyone was so dressed up I felt like I was in Vegas!) and then to a bar called PJ O'Briens a little Irish pub which had great live music.
On Sunday we decided to do a road trip down the famous great ocean road towards the apostle rocks. We rented a car and took to the open road with some CDs I picked up from the charity shop for entertainment. We stopped in Bells beach to watch the surfers for a bit, the girls came here earlier in the year for a surfing competition. We arrived at our cottage which was a gorgeous 2 bedroom place
tucked away in the rainforest. We were the only guests because it was their last weekend open and the place was spectacular we felt very special. Alicia grilled some steaks and I lit the wood burning fire place to hit the cottage and Kendra prepared the rest of the meal and we feasted. It was a fantastic night catching up with the girls. We also we able to venture out of the cottage into the dark to search for glow worms.
On Monday Alicia woke us up bright and early as per usual (this girl has been waking me up for about 10 years now she doesn’t understand the sleeping in concept!) Our first stop was triplet falls. We had to go down a little nature walk to get to the falls and it took about an hour. The falls were beautiful and the sun was shining. We then went to the Apostle Rocks a very big tourist activity and we were able to see about 7 out of the 12. The rock formations are pretty incredible and I can’t believe how many photos of rocks I took.
Back to New Zealand and then home tomorrow. Thanks Alicia and
Kendra for being the best hosts I am so glad I came to Oz to you see you girls rocking out in the city of Melbourne I feel very lucky!
