We had booked to take a cruise in Milford Sound from Te Anau while in QT but given the weather the night before and the fact that Milford has over 8 metres of rain every year (compared to only 0.6m in London) we were expecting a wash out...or at least a rather wet trip. So on a grey and slightly nippy morning we wrapped up in all weather gear and were picked up by Frank, the knowledgable ex-search and rescue paramedic. We now appreciate that when they say the weather in New Zealand can change drastically they are not exaggerating - it just got better and better and soon turned into a proper scorcher (the grey-skied pics were quickly deleted and replaced with these!). Having been to Norway's fjords and taken ships through them we were ... read more

Not so much time to write here, so I'll just upload pictures with brief captions. The drive is over 500km on narrow country roads - very pretty drive, but a long day at the wheel.... read more

Today is a bit of a race. Starting off in a luxurious hotel (hard not to pamper myself for just 10 more minutes), I need to drive to Milford Sound which is about 50km away, and arrive by 15:30. Sounds easy I know, but in between Queenstown and Milford Sound, there's just a great big mountain, and to date, the good people of NZ have not yet paid for a 50km tunnel to be bored through thr rock so that I can drive dirctly there. As a consequence of this, the only road to Milford Sound goes round the mountains for 300km and takes 4 hours to drive. If I want time to stop off on the way, that means no hot tubbing this morning. The drive starts along Lake Wakatipu with the road hugging the ... read more

Muy lindo paseo.... read more

December 3, 2009 Today was purely a day of hitchhiking, and after a rough start, we got even further towards Milford than we had hoped for. The first ride out of Christchurch took about and hour and a half to get. This was followed by much more waiting, several very short lifts, and us being still a long way from our goal with it being well into the late afternoon. At around 3:30pm, we found ourselves in the middle of absolutely nowhere on a road with almost no traffic. We had chosen a bad route to hitch over. Barely one car came every ten minutes. We were already assuming the worst; that we’d be stuck out here and end up sleeping in a farm field in our tent. That would mean even getting to Milford on ... read more

Last time we checked in.. we were getting our van fixed... good news it only took an hour to change out the pads. Scary as the front brakes went out while we where driving out of the Fiords. We found Stu's famous fly fishing shack and Ken bought a rod and reel.. We found a great stream (opening day) and spent the afternoon fishing for trout. We wrapped up the day driving into Queenstown. we were suprised to discover that it was Halloween and met William Wallace at a pub. We were tired.. and walked around finding a place where we could eat. We actually had the worst meal yet at the World Pub in Queenstown. Ken and Chad had some kind of Meat pie..that the venders were proud of and of course they didn't finish ... read more

We overheard someone say that the massive amount of sand flies present in Milford Sound is God's way of ensuring that the place is not destroyed by over development. It was an excellent idea because you simply couldn't live there for any length of time without the flies driving you crazy. The population of the village in winter is 30 people and only jumps to 100 in the summer months, mostly made up of crewmen for the various cruises and flights on offer. We left Queenstown early the day after our activity packed day out and made good time to Te Anau, where we stopped to have lunch by the lakeside. In Te Anau we were warned to bring good insect repellent with us to Milford Sound and to put it on before we got there. ... read more

So having been sitting it out in Te Anau trying to get to Milford Sounds Steve and I decided that Monday was the day to move onwards and head back to Queenstown. So I rolled out of bed at 9am and jumped in the shower. On getting back to the dorm Nick asked whether I had checked if the road was open Iconfirmed I hadn't as I was going with the assumption that it was shut however switched on my netbook to check just in case and surprise surprise it was open. Fast movements were then seen around the room from all three corners as Nick, Steve and I ran round gettig ourselves ready to be on the road asap. Having thrown breakfast down my neck and made a few sandwiches I checked with reception that ... read more
