On the morning we left Lake Tekapo we met Laura and Scott at the Astro Cafe on Mt John so we could all drive in convoy down to Te Anau. The drive was quite spectacular to say the least and even though we were still at high altitude we were surrounded by rivers, snow topped mountains and lakes. Just twenty minutes down the road from Lake Tekapo we stopped to take photos of the beautiful Lake Pukaki which had a view of Mt. Cook in the distance. It was a lovely setting and as no one else was around, Scott being a Kiwi said that we should all go for swim as it’s the thing to do in NZ.Jane and I were a bit hesitant on the idea but before you could say ‘sweet as bro’ Dr ... read more

The drive from Wanaka to Te Anau was via Queenstown, and some of the craziest roads yet. 180* turns down the mountainside with stunning views. After Queenstown it levelled out and was mostly rolling hills and farmland. On arriving at Te Anau we checked into our holiday park before a quick wander around and a BBQ and DVD night. In New Zealand they have a series of walking tracks called the great walks. These are really well planned out multi day walks with smart camping barns to stay in at designated points along the walk. Unfortunately due to the speed of our south island road trip, we couldn't really spare 4 days for a walk, so we planned to walk the first part of the Kepler track, from Te Anau. This meant we set off early ... read more

So day one we have to be at the office with our rucksacks and meet our fellow trekkers. It is always worrying when you meet people for the first time that you have to spend nearly 24/7 with them as you never know if you will like them or even if they will like you (don’t know anyone who would fall into the last category though, ha ha). So on the coach we get and everyone keeps to themselves, if I am honest. We stop at Te Anau where we have a change of coach driver and see a group returning from the trek. We all watched them avidly to see if they were limping and if they were still smiling. They did not give a lot away so we still did not know what we ... read more

MILFORD SOUND Milford Sound was previously named Milford Haven, by a Welshman of course, but was later renamed Milford Sound. They got that wrong as well, as it is not a “sound” (which is formed by water erosion) but a “fjord” (formed by glaciation). What’s in a name though, the whole area is beautiful. The scenery really starts at Te Anau and gets progressively better the closer you get to Milford Sound. (For anyone with campervans, there is no “freedom camping” along this stretch but there are lots of suitable Dept. Of Conservation sites along the way. When we got into the valley, we found out that from May on, during winter, it was a legal requirement that vehicles carried snow chains. Guess who didn’t have snow chains! They were an optional extra by the campervan ... read more

It is Saturday 28th April and we have arrived in our "Go Milford" bus at the boat charter terminal in Milford Sound. Having enjoyed the trip up (down?) from Te Anau where the 2 hours went so quickly we were hoping that our trip on the sound would be as exciting. We needen't have worried. Might say here that we have cracked a stunning day. Yesterday as we drove over from Gore the weather was ordinary (dull) to say the least and tomorrow the forecast is for rain and deteriorating weather and possibly some snow, yet here we are in brilliant sunshine which looks like holding for the duration of our trip. Magic! So much has been written about Milford Sound that it is pointless to go on and on describing it and it's countless statistics ... read more

John, Edel and I were on the road together again to head towards Milford Sound. What is this place I hear you say? A sound is technically a glacier valley which has been taken over by a river. This is what some of the first settlers here called Milford. It is actually a fiord. A fiord is a glacier valley which has been covered over by sea water. It is one of the most visited and easily accessible tourist trips in New Zealand but it was also reported to be one of the best. So off we headed in the Mysteron. The road there was a mix between back county flatlands at times to high mountain and lake valleys. The weather was dull and cloudy with rain so lots of them were covered along the way, ... read more

Hi Everyone! I apologize for how much I have procrastinated blogging about the remainder of my New Zealand trip. I have put it off so long that I have done lots of other interesting things and they are more pressing on my mind. I really want to write about snorkeling on the great barrier reef, which I did last week or riding on The Ghan, which I am doing right now. But that would not be Chronological. Also, I greatly enjoyed traveling in New Zealand and I think it will be one of my favorite places. I am not sure how I came to have writers block about my blog, which has no deadline, besides the one I impose on it. And no one criticizes me or tells me if complains about it. In any case, ... read more

Jim from New Zealand Wild Escapes picked us up a bit before 7:30am, right on schedule. We then picked up two other tourists, Bruce and Nick from their hotel. Our destination for the day was Milford Sound. As the crow flies Milford Sound is only about 70km west of Queenstown, unfortunately there are no roads through the mountains so to get there we end up driving almost 300km. The first leg is south through the sheep and deer stations along the southern arm of Lake Wakatipu. We then turn west for a bit and at the town of Te Anau we turn back north through the Fiordlands National Park. Te Anau is a cute combination of farm town and backpacker & camper stop. We were able to stretch our legs there for a half hour or ... read more

The resolution to be more tolerant lasted less than 10 hours. Older German roomie decided to stamp her demands on me to shut the door one too many times and I snapped at her. She had asked me for a lift this morning to go to Doubtful Sound but she lucked out at this point. Also, as I'd find out later in the day, the irritated feelings were mutual, as she went and moved rooms for the second of her night's stay. While I'm on the subject of lifts, NZ is full of hitchhikers. Everyone does it - you drive along the road and there's a queue of folk, all wanting to scrounge a lift. It's like match.com for travellers - you can drive along, pick the best or most interesting looking soul, and you've got ... read more
