16th March Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound and Dusky Sound. After crossing the Tasman Sea we sail into the beautiful and picturesque area of the Fiordland National Park. Fiordland is the largest National Park in New Zealand, it stretches from Martins Bay in the North to Te Waewae Bay in the South with the 4 eastern lakes, Te Anau, Manapouri, Monowai, Hauroko bordering the east and 14 Fiords on the West Coast. The Fiordland Park covers 5% of the area of New Zealand and was declared a World Heritage Area in 1986. This was just cruising through three of the Fiords today, beginning with Milford Sound, very dramatic entrance which you cannot see at the beginning. As Victoria gently eased herself around the cliff face you are faced with sheer sided mountains and waterfalls. The early morning mist, ... read more

" Every man can transform the world from one of monotony and drabness to one of excitement and adventure". Irving Wallace 18th March 2017 Never judge a book by it's cover is a motto to keep in mind when travelling. Haast (pop 300), the last little town on the West Coast, was to be nothing more than a victualing stop. Clean stuff, tidy the HBS, replenish wine supplies and move on. Haast puffed it's little chest out and we took note. About 50kms down the coast is the last stop on the West Coast before the fiordlands take control so it was only fitting to go and have a look at Jackson's Bay, a tiny harbour settlement which boasts it's own flock of blue penguins which, unfortunately, were out at sea bulking up before the onset ... read more

I can officially add Milford Sound to the list of some of the most beautiful places I've ever been. It's such a small area but the cliffs (towering thousands of feet high) over the water is breathtaking. We were up very early for a 6:00am breakfast at the Cafe. I chose yogurt with muesli- very yummy. And coffee of course. We were at the kayaking meeting place around 6:45am. It was literally right down the road, a little further than where we had walked yesterday. I think there's two or three companies in the area but we went with Roscoe's. Our guide, Mendela, turned out to be amazing. She was a well-traveled nomad who seemed to do jobs that had to do with yoga and guided small boat tours (kayaks, canoes, etc.). She was very informative ... read more

Kiwi blog#4 We have had a great few days in Fjordland and experienced the weather from both ends - torrential rain, misty fog and glorious warm sunshine. We have also experienced the absolute little miseries that are the sand flies. We are now vigilant about door and Windows and have a can of Mortein but no insect repellent really works so keep covered is the answer. All bites so far have been hands and fingers but when you get one boy do you know about it! We have spent time in Te Anau and have another campervan due to dead clutch on the second one. This van is bigger and fancier but has no heating if you are not on a powered site so we have had a couple of chilly nights freedom camping. It was ... read more

The Land of the Kiwis Ten days in New Zealand was a great experience, but it felt like I have been here for months. New Zealand has earned the nick name of backpackers/hikers paradise. The magnificent landscape, or better said, sea-scape of these islands are truly mesmerizing. Oceania or اقیانوسیه in Farsi, is perhaps one of the less spoken of cluster of countries and islands in the Pacific. Oceania is a region of the South Pacific Ocean that consists of many different island groups. It covers an area of over 3.3 million square miles. The island groups within Oceania are both countries or territories of other foreign nations. There are 14 countries within Oceania and they range in size from the very large such as Australia, to New Zealand, Indonesia, Philippines, etc. First day I arrived ... read more

We continued along the foggy highway towards Milford Sound Foreshore Walk Lu, our tour director, gave us the option of walking in the drizzle along the foreshore as we were early for our cruise, and I figured why not, so I joined the group and we enjoyed a nice walk in the rain. Cruising We boarded the Monarch and cruised the sound. It was raining, windy and cold, but I had my rain jacket and spent a lot of time out the back of the boat. At one point I did get rather drowned though! It was great to see the sound in this weather, as it was quite different from my 2013 trip.... read more

On Day 29 basically I just drove to Te Anau my start point for Milford Sound. On route I happened to stop at a rest point to take some pictures of New Zealand's fall colours. I noticed a display informing all that this was the location of the 45th parallel in the Southern Hemisphere - the exact mid-way point between the equator and the South pole. After sufficient celebration, I headed to Te Anau driving through a valley with mountains and hills on either side. I then booked a tour for the following morning for a bus tour to Milford Sound and a subsequent two hour cruise. Day 30 and I am off for Milford Sound. The 120 Km route from Te Anau to Milford Sound, the Milford Road, is a scenic drive through several valleys ... read more

C: The next morning was an early start as we had a long journey to get to fjordland. Annoyingly Milford Sound is only about 30 miles from Queenstown as the crow flies but due to some very large mountains you have to drive the long way round, about 180 miles. The road is very scenic though we have to admit we did doze a bit on the first leg as our hostel had not been the quietest! After about two hours we stopped for some much needed coffee and a bacon sandwich in Te Anau, the gateway town for the fjords. It was another two hours from there to Milford and this was when the rain started. It steadily got heavier and heavier and we were feeling a bit disappointed until we headed into a valley, ... read more

Thu: Routeburn Track ~Milford from above Fergbaker was going to be open until 4:30am, really, not a typo. I couldn't believe it because store hours everywhere in NZ have been super short so far. For whom do they need to be open all night? Ah, carnival town, right. We got up slightly before 4am so we can get breakfast. Drunk kids were flocking Fergbaker AND Fergburger. They serve breakfast burger. That place is seriously non-stop. This wee hour probably is the best time to get it. There wasn't much left at the bakery. V got his Boston cream donut (more like fried bread :p), brownie for me and a loaf of ciabatta for the road. On-time 5am start to Glenorchy. We're picking up the key locker from Trackhopper who will move our car from start to ... read more
