Milford Sound
Some of the dramatic milford scenery. Having cut Queenstown short by a day or two due to the race against the changing weather we made the drive to Te Anau where we stayed the night at a beautiful lakeside campsite. The next day our Milford adventure started. We had booked ourselves on an overnight cruise on the sound, being early on in the summer season we got a discount, so our cruise only cost us $133 each. Not bad for a nights accomodation, a slap up evening meal, a full cooked breakfast and kayaking to boot.
Anyway, first was the drive to Milford itself which is stunning, 120km's through the Fiordland National Park. On the road we stopped at the mirror lakes which gave us some great reflections of the mountains, although our mirror image was slightly distorted by a few cheeky ducks. We also made a few other stop for pictures as we drove on, but we were limited to stopping being in avalanche season and for most of the road we had to keep moving for fear of falling snow. Luckily we didn't need snow chains, The road was clear, which was a good job to as neither of us would have known what

The morning after our cruise. Perfect! to do with them anyway.
Then we went through the Homer Tunnel (Which is just a tunnel carved through solid rock, with no internal finish, leaving just the rough rock exposed), and we drove 1200m straigh downhill, we felt like we were on a rollercoaster ride. We made it through and from there it was only a short drive to Milford where we relaxed for a few hours before catching our boat, the Milford Wanderer. As we moved away from the harbour we took in the beautiful views of the sound while enjoy a great bowl of hot soup. Slowly we made our way to the edge of the Tasman sea where we dropped anchor to do a spot of kayaking.
After kayaking around for an hour or so we made our way back to the boat where we had a fantastic dinner of stuffed chicken breast with mash and veg, it was so good. We have been eating noodles and pasta out of a bag for way to long now. This was followed by strawberry and passionfruit cheesecake. Amazing! We dipped out a little into the Tasman sea again to watch the sunset and then cruised back
Milford Sound
The sun setting behind the Tasman sea. down the sound to our mooring for the night. After dark with not much else to do we cracked open a bottle of wine and played Guess Who and New Zealand monopoly until it was time for bed.
The following morning we had an early start, breakfast was between 7 and 7.30 and not wanting to miss our cooked breakfast we were there early, ready and waiting. After a good feed we had another crusied of the sound, we even spotted a little lone Fiordland crested penguin, the second rarest in the world. Awesome!
We made it back onto dry land just after 9am, from there it was back down the milford road to Te Anau and onwards to Dunedin.
