Let’s do it again……….that’s the Largest footbridge in the Southern Hemisphere. As we said goodbye to Otamure and headed for Ngunguru we decided to stop and walk the South Whananki Reserve Track. Back over the famous footbridge at North Whananaki then over to South Whananaki Beach. What a beautiful expansive beach, with nobody on itJ. As it was low tide we were able to walk around the beach perimeter of the reserve. It takes you in a loop from the beach around the end of the peninsula and entrance of the Whananaki Inlet, then back to the footbridge. All flat easy walking, can get a little wet underfoot on the inlet side, but you won’t melt:). Lance found a Kontiki kite floating in the surf on the beach side, I'm sure he will dream up something ... read more

Ever seen a drunk Tui? Well there are literally hundreds of them here at Puriri Bay. The Kowhai trees are all in flower here and the Tui’s are singing away like happy drunks. The bird life around here is probably the best that we have encountered so far. The noise first thing in the morning could either relax you or drive you crazy. A little rain this morning so I decided to get the camera out and look for some inspiration. The Tui was on my list (got it:), not perfect but still ok). Puriri DOC Camp sits on the Whangaruru North Head Scenic Reserve, so this afternoon’s adventure was to walk one of the tracks. Up over the hill South of the camp and down to pretty secluded Admiral Bay. Up out of the Bay ... read more

I'm walking on sunshine………. Yes the sun is out again and we have been enjoying a bit of warmth in the air the last couple of days. Day 95 We said a farewell to Matauri Bay and our new friends on Saturday. Then off to do a bit of tiki touring and to find the Tokau Bay beach access that Lance had read on the internet. No such luck as all the signs say no beach access so a bit of a back track back to the main road. A quick stop on the main road to pick up fresh flounder for lunch. 1st stop Akeake Historic Reserve. The reserve is North East of Kerikeri and access starts from Opito Bay. Opito Bay is on the Kerikeri inlet and obviously quite sheltered with many boats moored ... read more

Saving the best till last………Mahinepua Peninsula. We had been saving the Mahinepua Scenic Reserve track for when our daughter J and friend arrived. It was worth the wait. Mahinepua is a small peninsula between Tauranga Bay and Matauri Bay. The track takes about 2 hours return (photo stops included). This is a well maintained, track with plenty of stairs to help you up the steeper parts. Beautiful views up the coast towards Tauranga Bay, down to Mahinepua Bay, Te Ngaere Bay and the outer islands. As you get to the end of the track it loops around and from here you can walk out to the trig and the furthest point of the peninsula. This is an amazing spot with the red soil and contrasting blue water that looks directly across to Flat Island (Motueka Island). ... read more

Big little adventures is what we have been up to. We have opted to chill in Matauri Bay for a couple of weeks. Every day we have been venturing out finding little tracks and interesting spots to explore. We climb the hill up to the memorial and walk the beach most days. Lance has been biking the hill out of Matauri Bay (Show off!). So what have we found on our adventures? Taking the track up to the Rainbow Warrior Memorial and then walking out to the end of the peninsula. This is not really a formed track but we managed to push through the foliage and climb down a bank to the 2 little beaches at the end. What a cool spot with interesting rock structures jutting out from the water. If you scramble around ... read more

It’s a new day and time to do the Rainbow Falls River Track at a more leisurely pace. The NZMCA Motorhome Park is at the top of the falls so you can hear the noise even from inside. The Rainbow Falls is 27 metres high and impressive. It’s quite difficult to take clear photos at the bottom as the misty drift covers the camera lens today. Further down the track is the Wharepuke falls not quite as impressive as the Rainbow but still very pretty. Then to the end of the track at the Kerikeri Basin where the Stone Store (oldest stone building in NZ built 1832) and Kemp House (oldest wooden building in NZ built in 1821) sit. I remember holidaying here as a child, back when the road ran around in front of the ... read more

We finally have mobile coverage so thought it was time to update the blog. We have been chillin in Tauranga Bay for the past 7 days. What a magic spot, with the bonus of calm weather and a parking spot right on the beach. You couldn’t really ask for more. One evening we were treated to a pod of dolphins playing in the Bay and coming right into shore. Earlier in the week we hitched a ride over Radar Hill with another couple of campers to Mahinepua Bay and Wainui Bay. Had thought about biking over but we were saved by these lovely people:). Both these Bays are very nice and sheltered. Mahinepua Bay has a DOC walking track out onto a peninsula, that we definitely plan on going back and doing in the next week. ... read more

It’s very wet and boggy here at Hihi Camp. On leaving we helped 3 young tourists who had their campervan sunk on the wet ground. Everyone happily back on the road and we are off to Taupo Bay. Arrived in heavy rain and drove down to beach for a peek before heading to book into the Camping Ground. Taupo Bay Motor Camp is a nice camping ground a family business with very friendly owners/managers. The sun decided to make an appearance later in the afternoon which allowed us to wander 100m down the road to the beach. Another beautiful beach, that looks like it has it all ……fishing, swimming, surfing. The dramatic cliffs at the Southern End of this beach give this place quite a unique feel. Day 73 With the Birthday Boy on board we ... read more

It’s just another day for you and me in paradise……..I couldn’t agree more:). After a rather exhausting day yesterday we opted for a shorter walk from camp over to the other side of the peninsula to Karikari Beach. This is it we think……….(I'm so confused there are so many places I would rank as Paradise!) What a stunning white beach that stretches from the Waipapa Bay all the way down to Rangiputa. Sitting on top of the sand is little pieces of pretty coral. We walked the beach and scavenged for a selection of pretty coral as a souvenir. The day is glorious and probably the warmest day yet. Day # 71 We are on the move after enjoying 5 nights at Maitai Bay. On our way out of the peninsula we made a couple of ... read more
