As mentioned in my previous entry the northern most parts of Nz play an important role in Maori Mythology. They believe that this is the place where a person’s spirit comes after death and departs to their enternal home of Hawaiki. The spirit must first travel up 90mile beach and across the rugged line of Cape Maria Van Diemen to Te Reinga - the rocky point on which the lightuse is situated. Clinging to this rock is an ancient Kahika tree name Te Aroha and unlike any other tree of its kind, it has never been seen to flower. This area is known as Te Rerenga Wairua - Leaping Place of Spirits - as mythology states that the spirit must climb down steps formed by the roots of Te Aroha into the ocean. They would swim ... read more

South America, well, Chile and Argentina have been paving the roads so fast that we have put this 28 day, 5,000km plus, Tarmac Tour together for couples on Road Bikes. We have an eclectic mix of motorcycles and people for this adventure. From Auckland, we have Bob and Mary Grey, with Mary riding her Spyder and Bob on his BMW F650 GS. From Invercargill, we have Ross (D Duke) and Christine Bulling, they will be riding their bright red Ducati ST3. Raewyn (Bones) and I will be riding our Harley Davidson Ultra Classic CVO, with Gerardo leading the charge on his BMW1200 GS. Geo: -35.2821, 174.091Our 7:30 am flight from Mebourne (on an Emirates A380 Airbus - that's the great big double-decker thing) got us to Auckland for 1pm or thereabouts including time difference (New Zealand is 13 hours before London - how can that be?) and we picked up our car and drove off north for 3 hours or more to Pahia in the Bay of Islands where our motel was found above the town with a magnificent view rather shrouded in cloud and mist. Except for a trip into town for a meal at 'Only Seafood' that was it for the day. Next morning we drove a short distance to the carpark for a waterffall from which a track led by the side of the river about a 90 mnute walk to the Waitingi Treaty centre - ... read more

Nördlich, immer nördlich in Richtung Bay of Islands. Ich kann mich noch daran erinnern, dass die sanften grünen Hügel in ... read more

Saturday January 11th, 2014. Northland Road Trip, North Island, New Zealand After an al-fresco breakfast we threw our stuff in the car and headed to the 'Far North' (bit of a joke as that is really the north pole!). It is actually only moderately remote and the coastline was supposed to be amazing. Our first stop was Whangaroa, described in the AA book as "one of the most scenic harbours in the southern hemisphere". Whangaroa Harbour (the centre of the County) is 40 minutes drive north of the Bay of Islands and 30 minutes drive south of Doubtless Bay, making the area’s attractions an ideal stopover for travellers searching for something different that speaks of authentic Northland – unspoiled and unique. The harbour is almost land-locked and is popular both as a fishing spot in its ... read more

Motorcycles are finally Home... After a long voyage from Chile to new Zealand, via China (Hong Kong), we have finally got our motorcycles back, but not without our fair share of frustration and delays. The ship was due into port on a Thursday, and so I organised a run down to Hamilton see my sister, Robyn and brother in law, Rex, who was making up the steel work for my Parrilla (BBQ) project at home for me. This would also allow me time to catch up with Barry Sproule, at Road and Sport Harley Davidson and visit the National Field Days at Mystery Creek, then back to Auckland to clear the moto’s on Tuesday or Wednesday, the following week, this looked like a good plan For the first time, New Zealand Customs, selected our container for ... read more

Planning is well under way for our 2013 High Andes Adventure, with 9 bikes snuggled into the container and safely past the Astrolobe Reef, on their way to Valparaiso, Chile. This adventure started off a bit slow to get rider commitment, but, with only four days before closing the container, I got an urgent call from Jack, who had just been on an adventure ride down South, and he really wanted to come. He worked frantically to sort all the paperwork in one day that some of the others still have not completed!! For this High Andes adventure we have: Radar (Gavin Campbell) from Auckland, riding a KLR (ex Mike Vinsen fame, its already done the High Andes and the Patagonia Expedition). Barry Sproule from Road and Sport Harley Davidson in Hamilton, he is riding a ... read more

Yesterday I reached the most northern place in New Zealand. According to Maori culture the spirits of the sea leave this earth here. They travel down the cliff to the tree then wait for the kelp to part so that they can enter the sea. They travel from here to Three islands where they emerge into the after life. A truly spiritual place, I climbed to the highest point where all you could hear was the wind. The place marks the meeting of the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean you can see where the currents meet and apparently when there is a storm the waves can reach up to thirty feet. Today I spent at Maitai Bay, actually hot enough to venture in to the sea for a swim!!! Not as cold as the sea ... read more
