Imagine preparing for a 5 day back country camping trip. What would you take for meals? Generally the hardest meal to plan for is lunch. Breakfasts are usually oatmeal, and suppers we've defaulted to ready-made prepackaged dehydrated meals (at home we do our own dehydrating so we can be more creative). For the last several back country trips we've done here in NZ, we ate flavoured tuna and crackers for lunch. So by default that's what we planned to do this time around. On Day 1, halfway through his can of tuna, Jordan looked up at Kathie and said, "Ugh, I can't eat this anymore...". Kathie followed that with "me neither..." What do we do now? Thankfully Kathie is a great planner and had a couple of emergency packets of mac and cheese. Yay for hot ... read more

You know you are at Womad when you can hear an American musicologist talk about his life while New Zealand indie darling Lawrence Arabia busts out hit single Apple Pie Bed in the background. We went to New Plymouth for WOMAD at Brooklands Park where about 35,000 people gathered to sample the international diversity of more than 350 performers, there to entertain us on six stages with dance, art and music. We were entertained by an array of international musicians, including the legendary Bob Brozman, a performer and ethno-musicologist who has travelled the world studying the ancient roots of music. Brozman plays resonator guitars, an instrument created in the 1920s before the electrical guitar was invented. "This sound changed my life," says Brozman, who found two of the instruments in a pawn shop when he was ... read more

Thursday March 3rd Surfing Highway 45 Let's go surfin' now Everybody's learning how Come on and safari with me….the Beach Boys Today I have a short and enjoyable drive from Wanganui to New Plymouth. The drive is around the western “horn” of the north island. This area was formed by a very large, extinct, volcano called Mt Taranaki. The photos don’t express the grandeur of it. The landscape is littered with what appear to be lumpy hills that are really the remnants of the explosions from the mt. The coastal area is covered with wide flat beaches with sparkling black sand. This is the home of highway 45, or the Surfing Highway. Every town has a surf shop and it’s own beach. The surfer in my shots was on a beach at Opunake, one of the ... read more

Today I had a physio appointment. This was really a follow up to my previous appointment, and mostly to see how I was doing post race. The good news was that the leg had been holding up ok, it just felt a bit tight, and she reckoned that may well be because I’ve been running awkwardly because of the soreness in the leg, and that I have lazy glutes as a result, which isn’t helping as it puts extra stress on the thigh. A program of stretches to try and tighten up the glutes was the way forward, and so, with exercises which involve me looking like I’m trying to sit down on a toilet and then stand up again to practice, I headed out for the rest of my day. I decided I needed to ... read more

Making up the gingerbread house! This had been quite an event to look forward too, Tigger had made up the biscuit base the previous day, and today was the day for cutting and constructing the gingerbread house. I, like, I suspect, the kids, saw this as a vital final step before we would actually be able to decorate the gingerbread house, which was really the business end of the deal, with sweets and all sorts on standby to be surgically attached to the house with icing sugar but today was about gluing it together, and, for this Maia was on hand to offer assistance. To be honest, that was just about it for the day, not a lot else happened!... read more

Having driven back last night to New Plymouth, today was very much a recovery day, as I was feeling very tired! Got up and went to Church, which was good, had seen quite a few people the previous night at the café but it was good to catch up with everyone and fill them in with how the races had gone. Was a good fun service, and, afterwards, we helped to take down all the decorations in the main hall, and bundled a decorated artificial Christmas tree into the back of the car ready to drop into someone who was in need of one, and headed back for a bit of a sleep as I was still really tired. We overslept a bit but were on the road by 4.30 to Malcolm and Mandy’s for a ... read more

We have rain! Proper heavy rain, finally. My first action of the day was to head out for my physio appointment. Arrived and explained what has been going on with my thigh, and, within about 5 minutes, she had worked out that I actually tore my right thigh almost completely about 3 years ago when I initially hurt it. She then did some acupuncture, where she digs needles into the knots and ‘hurty’ points of the leg, along with massage, to get the leg to loosen up a bit. Was extremely bizarre having a needle jabbed into your leg and then have the leg twitch and spasm. She had warned me that it could cause the muscles to ache a bit, and we’d talked about whether to go ahead with the treatment with my racing on Saturday, ... read more

Today Helen and I went into New Plymouth, to Centre City, as Helen really fancied having her toes painted, as the paint job she had done in Abu Dhabi had started to wear off!! I did a bit of shopping while she had her toes done, and got some more clothes. Then we checked out the book shop and headed to get a coffee, at which point we bumped into Steve and Liz who joined us for coffee and a bit of a chat. We know them from church, but Steve is also the local GP, someone who saw me when I had a chest infection last time I was out here. After the coffee we headed to the bike shop, as I needed to find some decent nutrition for the longer rides, and for the ... read more

. A month into our trip! Hard to believe we’ve crammed so much in already, but there we go! Time for me to select my photo of the month for November, because that’s still on-going! Now just 31 days left to have a photo a day (pretty much) for the entire year. Been an interesting year, it has to be said, and the last month especially has been packed and varied, so it’ll be tough to select the pic for this month, but I’ll try my best  Anyway, what happened today? Well, firstly, I had a swim/bike transition practice session. The pool in Inglewood is ideal for this as they have bike racks actually pool side, so you can set the bike and all your ride gear up by the pool and literally swim, then ... read more
