11th November I have a plan, of sorts, to aim for the National and Regional Parks, that way I am guaranteed a scenic walk. After I pack the van up, I head south towards Humus Ranges National Park. I get to the toll road, which reminds me that I still need to pay for the trip north on the toll road. Apparently it is an offence not to pay within days of use, best get on to that at some point. It is about an hour and a half drive, every where takes so long to get to as the sipped limits are lower than the UK. Most roads are 80km which is about 50mph and the motorways are 100km (62mph). I get there about 12ish and it was raining quite heavily, so I found a ... read more

After the debrief on the workings of the motorhome we went to a Pak 'n Save store for a load of supplies. The kids tried to help, but you know how kids can be in supermarkets, especially after spending so much time sitting down... we survived it and remained on reasonable speaking terms... A short jaunt south from Auckland to the Firth of Thames, an estuary with a windswept DOC (Department of Conservation) motorhome park up. A strip of grass to park on, no amenities, and then you could just step down onto a white seashell covered beach with an uninterrupted view across the estuary to the Coromandel Peninsula. We sat outside in the sun and had a buffet type lunch, feeling very happy to be outside once again. After lunch we nipped 10 minutes down ... read more

On the road again, just can't wait to get on the road again.................... Left Tapapakanga this morning and headed north. 1st stop Orere Pt for a quick look. The wind was howling, the exit out of the motorhome was pretty impressive as the door flew open and I ejected out of my seat. This is a forget the hairbrush day as you are well and truly wasting your time (not that Lance has to worry too much about that). Our next stop was Kawakawa Bay. We really like this spot, excellent boat ramp, good fishing grounds and Hauraki Gulf islands all close by. Spent a bit of time watching boats being launched and retrieved down at the boat ramp which is always good entertainment:) Just up the road is Duder Regional Park. Had a quick walk ... read more

Where am I? .......... who cares I survived.! Walked the Coastal Walk at Tapapakanga this morning. I am sure the sheep were concerned with my breathing as I approached the Trig Station. Good walk minus a slight detour via a very steep cliff to avoid wet shoes. (I was no way in hell going back down the same way!). If the Health and Safety officers had seen us we have promptly been marched off the property with a red card for sure. (Sorry Jo at Pedersen Group we failed today, oh well another day tomorrow:). Down the southern end of the coastal track was the kayak campground ...what an awesome spot. The place was surrounded with trees full of Wood Pigeons who obviously frequented McD's. Fat little buggers they were. This afternoon Lance and I were ... read more

A Frost in Miranda! Well it doesn't look like we have escaped the early morning chill. There are a few vans around the campsite with ice on the windows. We definitely needed to move further North to find some warmer weather. Well we only actually travelled 38kms up the coast today. Stopped at Matingarahi Bay to make date scones and a cuppa coffee:). Looking out from here you look towards Tapu on the Thames side of the firth. Lots of mussel barges out working today (mmm wish we had our boat). Final stop for the day after such a gruelling day on the road is Tapapakanga. Lance and I have been to this beautiful spot before but never stayed. Tapapakanga is an Auckland Regional Park. What a mission to book over the phone which is the ... read more

Blue Sky smiling at me, nothing but Blue Sky do I see...... That's our song today, not a cloud in the sky:). Cleared the net this morning and had another large Kahawai. Late breakfast in the sun then off on our bikes. Its been a long time since we have been for a bike ride. Headed up the Kaiaua coast with a lovely tail wind. Stopped for coffee and scones at the pink place in Kaiaua as we battled our way back to Rays rest against a very cold head wind. We must be getting old (or soft) as we couldn't quite warm up so opted to drive back to Miranda Hot Springs for the night. Already been for 2 swims and feeling warm and toasty again:). Will sleep well tonight.... read more

Hunters and Gatherer's, that's what we are:). Cleared the net early this morning and had another huge Kahawai in the net, so made Ika Mata (Raw Fish). For all you food snobs out there its a great fish to use you just need to remove any red flesh. To all my South African mates you would be proud as I make my raw fish using Cape Malay spices....yum. Feeling domesticated today an made bread dough for the Dutch oven tomorrow. Spent time in the sun reading and chatting to other campers staying here. Later in the day I had a go at fishing off the beach with no luck. Just cleared the net again tonight to find another huge Kahawai. Looks like we have breakfast sorted tomorrow.... read more

A farewell to Thames, as we head to Ngatea Water Gardens. This is well worth the stop and a wander around these gardens even in the winter. The owners of this property have a great sense of humour which is reflected in the many signs and quirky touches added around the garden. They also have a can museum with over 14,000 different beer and other beverage cans on display. If you think you have tried every beer think again. This is one place you could probably leave your husband for a few hours while he plays the "I've had that beer game!" In winter Ngatea gardens are only open on Sunday. If you can, go in the summer, as I would imagine the place would be beautifully coloured with flowers. From Ngatea we headed to Rays ... read more

Windy, windy, windy is the theme today. Dragged our backsides up the hill to the Thames War Memorial Monument. The view is pretty nice up there. Nobody around or stupid enough to be up there in the wind however. Like all the war memorials we have recently seen in small town NZ, it still surprises me the large list of names. Thames have a market every Saturday morning and it is well worth a walk around. Plenty of fresh produce, and deli items to stock up your pantry. Buskers singing on the street add to the atmosphere. In true Chiefs spirit we have spruced ourselves up, brushed our hair (well maybe not Lance) and worn our Chiefs jerseys today in preparation for tonight's game. I am sure we will find a pub to have a few ... read more

We headed back to Thames township today and have spent the day walking as it was too windy to go biking. Wandered down the Coastal Walkway which was very colourful, the locals have brightened things up with lots of interesting colourful sculptures, paths and fences. Coffee and cake in Melbourne café this afternoon. This is a cool café. Local Thames boy meets Melbourne girl, marry in the Yarra Valley and later head back to NZ with baby in tow and start their NZ adventure. Wife gets homesick so decide to bring a little bit of Melbourne to Thames. Feeling rather stiff after all the walking it may be wine time:)... read more
