Once more we are out in the South Pacific, cruising up (toward the equator) from Melbourne to Sidney, Australia. We toured Melbourne yesterday and stopped by their WW2 Memorial, an impressive marble edifice with a large military parade. It seems it was the Aussie Memorial Day, which is Feb. 13 (nobody seems to know why). Then back to the ship for a hurried lunch, after which we were bussed to the local polo grounds at Werribee Park for the England-Australia match. All we knew about polo was what we saw in Pretty Woman, so this was a new experience indeed. But it matched the image we had, down to the “stomping of the divots” between chukkas (quarters, or fifths, or something like that). We were instructed to wear “casual white” for the occasion, but the Aussies ... read more

Australia….…..I love this place. It is actually really nice to be in a big city right now, especially after being on my own in Fiji for so long. Here I can really feed off of the people, the energy; in my short time here I have already formed a really good impression of this city. It is a large city, but it is not intimidating, it is really clean, well spaced out, and beautiful. With tons of parks, trees and street performers. Everyone seems really friendly and there are a lot of funky little cafes, restaurants, and bars. It is pretty expensive here (about the same as home) - and it is really easy to travel around here…the hostels are nice, everyone speaks English, and there is a huge infrastructure built up for backpackers (since this ... read more

I know... I know... I haven't written in a while but I have a really good excuse!! I have been having the TIME OF MY LIFE!! I've been doing things that I've always dreaming of doing. When we arrived in Surfer's, we headed to the largest mall in the Southern Hemisphere (The Pacific Fair Mall) and did some browsing. After that we headed to the CBD (City Business District.. that is what Australians call downtown area) for some dinner. We ate at this little Italian restaurant, then we all headed to an Irish pub (Gilhooley's) for a few drinks. We finally found somewhere that know what a Rye and Ginger was! We finally got a good opportunity to get to know our tour guide John, we had a good conversation. We all then headed across the ... read more

Hello hello!, I think it's about that time, it's been a couple of weeks, and i have things to write about. Wild, crazy things. Not really. So i was expecting my emails to become a little more bland now as i'm not really travelling about, i'm staying put and trying to get a job, nothing exciting, but, i feel pretty positive about what i get to write about as i really love cairns and think i will enjoy my time here. So, back the truck up. I'm in cairns. I think i ended off my last email by saying that. That, and that i hated typing and never wanted to type again, which as you can see is untrue. Another thing that i said that is also now untrue, is that i was enjoying job hunting. ... read more

The last 2 weeks in Sydney have been great, mostly due to the fact that I haven’t had to stay in some flea pit of a backpacker’s hostel but have instead been enjoying the palacial luxury of Mark’s apartment which has a prestigious position overlooking Manly harbour. Nice ! This was because, on returning to Sydney from the Northern Territory I spoke to Mark who informed me that his flat mate had just moved out so there was a room spare in his most luxurious apartment - I did say I had been incredibly lucky since arriving in Oz didn’t I. So the last 2 weeks have been spent experiencing the sights and sounds in and around Sydney such as; surfing on manly beach (obviously); taking a show at Sydney Opera House (ok, so it wasn’t ... read more

The food was surprisingly ok (compared with airport food of course), but their service is horrible. This is in fact a surprise because in HK people were SOOOO nice all the time, one can't miss it. I'm am just passing time at another free internet stand, this time in Sydney airport. We were too tire to go out to the city. And to Tammy that asked and anybody else if you wondered: My regular mail works as usual (it's forwarded to my web mail). ... read more

Dear All, Okay, I finally made it to Sydney Australia; Upon arriving at my hostel, a quaint, out-of-the-way brick "cottage" in the Sydney suburbs, I was greeted by what could have been a washer lady from England during its Industrial Age. She was all ruddy-faced and foul-mouthed. She waddled like an angry penguin. Her bulging forearms scared me. Still, she was an inviting personality, generously sprinkling her talk using the word "love." Some Aussie peculiarities: there is no "exit," just a "way out." Bathrooms for "men" and "women." Not! Just "male" and "female" with a separate "parents'room" for changing dirty diapers. Also, there seem to be more people of Asian descent here (in Sydney) than San Francisco. We're talking over 50% of the population! Even the keyboard on which I'm typing on has cryptic Asian ... read more
