Predictably I suppose my flight North to Cairns was delayed by about an hour - although I again got an entire row of seats to myself (perhaps I smell???). I contemplated that fact while I sat outside Cairns airport in the morning sun trying to figure out how I would recognize my free pickup - until a van with Dreamtime travellers rest in huge letters on the side turned up and I was soon being driven to the hostel by Eva, a German girl between Abitur and University and killing time in the sun. As we drove through Cairns to get to the hostel I started to like the city. It was all low rise, lots of Palm trees and a lot of happy looking people wandering around. The humidity, while unpleasant, really made it feel ... read more

Days 117 - 120 Got up early for the free pancakes, checked out and sorted out changing boats for when we get to The Whitsundays as we found one we much preferred. Once that was all sorted we had lunch and jumped onboard the bus headed for Bundaberg. We arrived about 5 and were picked up and taken to our hostel - which turned out to be the coolest hostel EVER! It is a converted police station and we were staying in an old cell!! How cool is that! A little later we watched a syrup wrestling competition! It was pretty entertaining with the wrestlers slipping about all over the place in a giant paddling pool! Stuart particularly enjoyed the ladies fights! We had a couple of drinks then retired to our cell and watched tv ... read more

Right, now for my update on my fantastic first week in Melbourne with my beautiful friends Katie and Danny!! It was really strange when Katie picked me up from the station after flying from Tasmania, as I'd only met her once before when she was over in England and that was really brief anyway. It felt soooo goood to be in a home environment again and especially having a gorgeous double bed all to myself, it's so comfy! The next day Danny arrived from New Zealand (I know him from college, we were in the same group but opposite ends...) It was a very bizarre feeling, seeing someone I know all the way in Australia. Especially as we weren't even that good of friends back home yet we were hanging out here! (we're friends now of ... read more

Pyddy's market sai taas hieman lisää rahaa. Tuliaiset melken jo ostettu. Ei oo enää paljoo ostamatta.. loput rahat voiki sit käytää matkusteluun loppuaikana. tai no ehkä pitää viel jotain kuitenki ostella.. ;) Postista käytiin ostaan laatikot, et saadaan lähettää jo ensimmäiset paketit kotiin. Menee kyl ens viikolle toi lähetys, ku eihän se posti oo sillon auki, ku meille sopis. mut paketin pitäs olla samaan aikaan perillä ku meki, ku lähettää sen meripostina. Iltapäivä vaan ... read more

Toowoomba is really shaping up to be not so bad. I’ve really made a lot of new friends and finally some Aussies! (even a few Kiwi’s…Australia’s “special” cousins of New Zealand, lol…we don’t talk about them). I met this guy named Cameron from New South Wales and his brother’s name is Rhys…which I dunno if you know, but that’s one of my fave Celtic names…and from “new south wales” too…which is slightly ironic, I think. Before coming to Australia I didn't think that I would experience culture shock (or much, really) because our countries are so similar and they speak our language. However, I say "speak our language" very loosely because sometimes you do wonder... I arrived and was blown out of the water how different it was. I had been sick the week before I ... read more

So it's Thursday....Wednesday...Thursday, depending on whatever country you are living in, and I really don't have that much to say, except that here is where I am spending my vacation, and it is exactly what a vacation should be. I've done nothing more than...well, nothing really. Not that nothing doesn't feel like nothing, it feels like something. Sorta like negative space is positive space....sorta like when in Graphic Design I try to convince my clients time and time again that the WHITE SPACE in their ad does not have to be filled...the emptiness, the nothingness...it's a good thing. And it's surely what makes the positive space, the somethingness...exist. Does that make sense? I guess put simply, it's the quiet downtime that is treasured as much as the chaos and exiliration of traveling and all of life's ... read more

Andy was up at 6.30am for a walk along the beach feeling a little ruff for too much goon! We had breakfast around 8am and set off for the day at 9am. This morning we were taking a walk into the rainforest. The amazing thing about this rain forest is that it is all growing in sand! You wouldn't think there is enough nutrients, but there is enough nutrients in the top couple of inches, so they spread their roots along rather than down. We had a few stop offs on the way to the walking track through the forest where Mark told us about various trees, plants and logging on the island. We had a nice steady walk through the Yiddy rainforest and along the Wanggoolba Creek. We saw a few lizards and an eel. ... read more
