5 March Woke under huge trees shedding bark and gently raining gumnut caps on roof of car. Ah, Nannup. Drove in early morning sun and shadows along empty winding roads through southwest forrests. Tookgravel road shortcut explained by local in Pemberton. Back on main road through Walpole to Denmark. Very quiet. Long weekend Sunday. Called acquaintance and met at airstrip where flying models and real planes starred in aviation get together. I listened to old flyer tell extraordinary tales of the early days. Eagles hovered over flying models thinking they were prey. Headed for Albany. Picked up two Canadian hitchhikers. Rare sight these days. Enjoyed walking track along Princess Royal Harbour. Spruiked empty streets. Met two dutch travellers who told me where the public hot shower was. Still the lucky country. 6 March Monday Rode up ... read more

FINALLY the sun came out. its been torrential rain for the past 3 days. no diving or surfing because the swell has been massive so ive been stuck in Byron Bay. but today we all awoke to beautiful clear blue skies...the brightest clearest blue imaginable. so everyone hit the beach. including me since the swell was still too big to surf. Im a little tender now...some fairly uncomfortable burnage going on! silly me! but im so not the only one. looking round the table at the hostel just prooved how many people had been so excited bout the sunshine. im pretty annoyed cos i was wearing factor 30+ but i guess i missed bits...the most patchy sunburn ever! so no one really feels like partying tonight...no one can stand too close to anyone cos it hurts!!! ... read more

6 March 2006: Australia produces many excellent wines. One of the areas in the state of Victoria which is known for many wonderful wines is the Yarra Valley, which is right here outside Melbourne. So, on Thursday we had “wine” day. All the wineries have tasting rooms and most have restaurants also. We visited about 4 or 5 different wineries and at lunch at the Rochford. The dining room and the food (and of course the wine) were all great. The last one we visited is a subsidiary of a French winery and makes sparkling wine, which was fun to see and taste. On the way back we stopped at the local dairy. They were offering samples there too, which we were happy to accept. I am including some photos simply titled: a happy man! On ... read more

Kaupassa käytiin.. taas vaihteeks! meidän jokapäiväinen traditio.. jotain pientä on aina pakko hakee! tänään tuli opintotuki eli h... read more

Hey! We are currently in Mission Beach after travelling a few hours from our last stop in Airlie Beach. Airlie Beach was the stepping stone to the Whitsunday islands, an amazing array of untouched islands off the border which provided glorius views of beauty! The trip was only 2 nights and 3 days but we pretty much all agreed that we could easily do it again and if i was in Oz for longer i would definetly have tried for a job for a couple of weeks! We started off by meeting the crew and the other passengers. It was a 26 man boat and this time there were only 7 of us. However, within 30 minutes 3 of the 4 crew knew my name and we were well on the way! ;-) We were on ... read more

So the need for beaches and thrills has arrived and the last few days in Sydeny had to be carefully planned in order to fit everything in that we wished to do before we leave the place that has been our home now for 4 months. As we had all been working different hours we had all done different things usually as pairs Matt and Chris and Colin and Myself. For me the one thing that I just had to do before I left was to go upto the opera house and see it up close and personal. Colin had already been up the steps to touch the masterpiece but came along for the ride anyway. On a lovely sunny Sunday afternoon the sun was shining at it's best so the Opera house gleamed in all ... read more

We set off early this monring to begin the long drive over to the east coast. After travelling about 500kms we soon arrived back in the poo hole that is Tenant Creek where we stayed at the YHA - again! Not much to do outside unless you like getting insulted by drunk aborigines at every hour of the day so we settled in to watch the Hollywood Oscar ceremony, which was just as poo! Still, east coast adventure begins soon. Mike... read more
