I was up early this morning and I headed down to the pier to catch my ferry to Rottnest island which is just off the coast of Fremantle. It's about an hour ferry ride from Perth up the river out to Rottnest island. Once the ferry landed on Rottnest island I hopped off and grabbed the bike I rented. It's been a while since i've ridden a bike but I hopped on with my map in hand and headed off to see the sights. I started out ok and seeing some of the coast on this island was amazing. But the road started getting quite hilly and it was hot out so I was sweating a lot. SOme of the hills I had to walk up because I had no energy. I stopped at a few ... read more

A nice Jetstar flight back from Melbourne to Perth, well actually quite a bumpy ride as we came back in but it was good fun playing cards up the back of the plane with fellow passengers, don't get enough of that sort of thing at home. Well it would never happen on the tube. Only a few days left around Perth but I did not want to waste it especially as the weather was tops so decided to spend a night over on Rottnest Island, just about 10km over the Indian Ocean. Rather than get down to Fremantle again I went from Hilarys Harbour up north of Scarborough and here is a tip, you can hire a bike from your Ferry company and easily get it put on the ferry, this saves fuss and I expect ... read more

Hi all, Yesterday was a lovely day where we enjoyed a family BBQ - Auntie Marie and Uncle Terry invited Padma, Clinton and Baby James and also Paul (International Cricketer!) and Jaime so it was lovely to meet everyone and have a few beers together and some lovely food. Afterwards we headed over to Uncle Terry's factory unit to see his kit cars and went for a real thrill ride in one of them! The noise was immense and our legs were shaking afterwards from the adrenaline. Today we took the ferry accross from Fremantle to Rottnest Island, which is a small place off the coast in the Indian Ocean, and it's vehicle free so we hired bikes to travel around. No doubt there will be a few aching muscles tomorrow! We found a few secluded ... read more

ROTTNEST ISLAND One of the most difficult things about cruising is choosing what to do in port. The choice was especially hard in Perth. This is a dynamic city and deserves a through look. The post is Fremantle. It also has an interesting history and a thriving night scene. But since my focus has been on wine and wildlife I chose to spend the day at Rottnest Island. A forty-minute ferry ride brought us to the island along with many of the workers who commute to work. I was traveling with Tamara, a retired performing arts professor from Washington State. She is also traveling without her husband and we have similar tastes. We bought a day pass and boarded the bus. This is a great way to get acquainted with the island and plan my day. ... read more

So before leaving I had to spend a few days on my beloved Rottnest Island. Captain J-Rad took us over on Amnesia - a slightly rough ride. Once we arrived we got down to business and opened some drinks. There were plenty of laughs and good times had by all. Lisa and I stayed on while the others headed back to the mainland on Monday arvo. The weather was perfect and we were glad of our trusty push bikes. We swam, ate and drank. The perfect Australia Day weekend. Thanks to all who made it a ripper!... read more

4-1-10 Mon Off on the ferry at 8am to Rottenest Island ,(thanks to the Xmas money guys) it was a 40 min ride & a bitt rough but not too bad. We arrived at the Island & were greeted by our tour guide, who told us about the history of the Island. We did not know it used to be an aboriginal prison, & it was very interesting. There is a small Kangaroo on the Island known as the Quokka , it looks like a rat. We had morning tea & there was 6 of us in the group, it was nice as it was not too big, after that we went on a Discovery Tour around the Island & it was so nice. The colour of the water is amazing, & one side of the ... read more

After making our decision to head home both Sheena and I started to count down the weeks (days!) left that we would have to soak up all that Perth had to offer. So in true 'Scott' fashion, we made a list (Eric did..not Sheena) of things we had to see/do before leaving Perth. Time is definitely moving quick and starting to run out! First thing's first: Java Juice had to go. As much fun as it was to make smoothies all day and drink a ridiculous amount of freshly squeezed juices on my break, it was taking up our available time on weekends. Alas, I bid them a fond farewell (but still am on payroll to ensure that I get that sweet employee discount ;) and now Sheena and I both have our weekends free to ... read more

And here I was again, back in Fremantle for the start of my first day after the tour. But here with a good reason- more scuba diving! I was off for a trip to the waters around Rottnest Island, which is just Dutch for 'Rat's Nest' Island because (apparently) of all the quokkas which are a particularly ratty looking species of kangaroo that live there. Not that I got to see any. I guess they are not noted for their underwater swimming ability. Well, any of you with a big jealousy thing going on because of the manta rays and whatnot will be pleased to know that the first dive did not go very well at all. OK, I might as well copy it down pretty much verbatim from my dive log book... 'Spent ages on ... read more

Rottnest Island lies about 50 mins off the coast from Perth and is reached by ferry. The island was discovered in 1696 by a dutch explorer and got its name after the islands “Quokkas” were mistaken for giant rats (Rottnest = rats nest) After housing a prison for aboriginal men between 1838-1903 it became a detainment centre during WW1 for german and Austrian descendents. Only after this did it become a holiday playground and island reserve. After almost missing the morning ferry we arrived onto the 19km² island and waited for our hire bikes to be unloaded from the ferry(as the island is car free the only way to get around is on foot or by bike!) Having prebooked our hire bikes ahead we were told they would be labelled with our names on and waiting ... read more

Day 34 (Sunday 24-May-09, NJJ) Luke made us bacon and egg rolls for brekkie before driving us to get the ferry to Rottnest Island. We hired bicycles to get around the island for the day which was fab and good exercise in the sunshine. We rode to Little Salmon Bay where we stopped for some time, had the lunch we'd bought at island entrance, and relaxed in the sun. On the way back to the bike rental place we stopped to see the Quokkas at the roadside, a good chance for Jamie to make some new animal friends, they were so cute. I hurt my heel on the pedal of the bike but Jamie trumped me as usual when he stubbed his toe on the ground. We had a wander up to the lighthouse before getting ... read more
