Spent last night in Rottnest Island... and we loved it, definitely the best place we have visited so far, too bad we only had a night there. We would have stayed much longer if we'd have known more about it!! It's a small island off the coast of W.A., they don't have cars there so they get around on bikes (I did a lot of cycling, and now have a sore backside). It's hardly inhabited at all, so it's mostly bushland and quiet, secluded beaches; some with waves others more quiet, great for snorkelling. We did snorkelling yesterday, it was awesome to see some of the fish and eels and stuff that live in the sea, the guy at the snorkel hiring shop asked us if we had seen sting rays... luckily we hadn't... cos if ... read more

Question: What do you call a cross between a kangaroo and a rat? Answer: A Quokka! As you will know, Australia is home to some of the most dangerous and, frankly, wierdest animals around. The quokka is no exception... After leaving Exmouth and taking a two day bus down to Perth, we met up with my friend Meredith (whom some of you will know from the wedding in Bali) and headed over to Rottnest Island. It got its name from one of the early explorers who thought it was infested with large rats, therefore "Rat's nest". We could see why. At sundown, everyone heads to the only pub on the island, the aptly named Quokka Arms, for a pint and some serious Quokka-spotting (these people are known as "quokka-spotters" - he he). You don't have to ... read more

We had a lovely time at Rottnest Island. It was stinking hot about 36 degrees but the water is crystal clear and the beaches are amazing. We hired bikes and a trailer for isobel and went from bay to bay snorkelling in the reefs and looking at the interesting fish.... read more

When you’re in Perth, an absolute MUST is to take a trip to Rottnest Island (known locally as Rotto). It’s a breathtakingly beautiful little island located off the West coast about 20 kms from Perth / Fremantle. It’s only about 11km long and 5km wide, and although there is a road which takes you all the way round, there are only about 5 cars on the island - making it perfect for cycling. The waters around Rotto look like Barbados - pure turquoise and azure blue, and are pretty shallow in most parts. Inland, you could be forgiven for thinking that you’re on a British moorland, with lots of scrub and bushes. Only much sunnier of course! - FOOD: Emu bitter; good, cheap Asian grub; free popcorn at the hostel. - PEOPLE: Know it all family; very few inhabitants. - AREA: Quokka inhabited, tiny paradise island with hundreds of beautiful, white sand, clear turquoise, coral filled sea bays; plenty of varied greenery and very few buildings. Bike without gears to cycle in heaven. Big king lizards. Ferries; nice hostel; 'Million Dollar Baby' DVD at the hostel. - WEATHER: Keep topping up that sunscreen and drinking that water! Sun 11th Sep: I caught a ferry to Rottnest Island (named from a Dutch man who was first to arrive and thought the 'quokka's' were rats - 'Rat's Nest'). The island is only 11k long and 4k wide so I hired a bike to cycle around it's perimeter under the hot sun. Such BEAUTIFUL bays - ... read more

We arrived in Perth after an overnight stop in Adelaide, in a great YHA Hostel, imagine our disappointment when the Brittania YHA was a very poor relation in comparison. Still we were only sleeping there. We took a walking tour of Perth city centre and ended up down at the river front, where there was a large circus tent - curious as ever - we investigated to discover that it was the Cirque de Soleil. We couldn't get tickets for any of their shows way back in Las Vegas and we were sold the last two for the second last performance that afternoon. Oh my god!!! What a show - it was fantastic, each act was spectacular, better than the previous, if that could be possible, if you ever get the chance to see any of ... read more

One fine day

We'd been looking forward to this place for a long time, luckily the Perth weather was kind to us and the day was sunny and warm. We hired a tandem and had a really great day riding around the island, tandems are excellent fun, we'd recommend one to anyone looking for something a bit different, just keep an eye on your rear passenger else you could end up pretty knackered by the end of the day! Luckily for me, no such problems with Jo! We were expecting the ocean to be as cold here as it has been everywhere else so we didn't take out snorkelling gear........mistake, it looked absolutely awesome out there, only just warm enough but we could have braved it!! Oh well, you can't have it all, we did get our feet wet ... read more

Rottnest Island is about a 30 min ferry journey from Fremantle, when the first settlers went there they thought it was infested with rats hence the name rottnest (rats nest). The rats turned out to be Quokka's which are a cross between a rats and a kangaroo. The island is pretty empty and the only way round is on a bicycle, the beaches are gorgeous and the wildlife plentiful, It was a lovely relaxing day.... read more

If you get a chance to head over to Western Australia you must visit Rottnest Island. ( Meaning Rats nest as coined by the Dutch When the discovered the island) Its only 18 km from Perth and is a small enough to walk around in a day but can keep you entertained for at least a few. The ferry left from Fremantle and is only $53AUD return which isnt too bad. Once on the island you can hire bikes or just walk around as you please. It definetly boasts some of the most amazing white beaches ive ever seen and are alot of the time completly empty for ultimate seclusion. There are camp sites as well as a hostel and cheap bungalows for 4-8 people. The most amazing aspect of the Island is the animal ... read more
