Sheena & Eric Scott

On a year-long adventure, after a honeymoon in Fiji we're off to Australia - to live, work, and start our marriage together as Auzzies!

This one is for Mike. So I needed to write this blog to get something out of my system. On the way to Whistler we lost our luggage - scratch that - United Airlines and LAX lost our luggage. Which we’re told happens a lot. But my problem is that they shouldn't have. We flew from Sydney to LAX via QANTAS (great flight on a brand new plane) and had to get our checked baggage in LAX to clear customs - standard Homeland Security procedure. On our way to our connecting terminal, we had to re-check our bags and drop them in a connecting baggage spot - which of course as everything in LAX is under constant construction was a closet behind dividers where some guy was just taking bags and throwing them into a room ... read more

With an early morning departure from Mark & Leanne’s in Melbourne, we arrived in Sydney around 10 on Monday morning. Finding our hostel in the Rocks (an area right in the heart of Sydney underneath the Sydney Bridge) turned out to be a bit more challenging than we thought, but after some tough stair climbing (I'll let you guess who carried all 4 suitcases!?) we found our destination - Sydney Harbour YHA. After checking in (and being reunited with our luggage that had been shipped from Perth!) we started looking out for the other “Canadian” team who would be arriving: Mike & Rita, along with their friends Andre, Areta, Pierro, Tom and Ying. Upon assembling in the afternoon, we decided the best thing to start our time in Sydney would be to grab some drinks and ... read more

Arriving in Melbourne we picked up our rental car with GPS (which was HIGHLY recommended by our hosts, Mark & Leanne - and we soon found out why) and started to make the drive into the city and to Southbank where we’d be staying for the next four days. Starting off easy, we soon found out the craziness that is Melbourne navigation: intersections with multiple directions, roundabouts that aren’t quite round, tram tracks which crisscross everywhere, and not to mention the famous “hook turn” (to make a right-hand turn you have to be in the furthest left lane, inch into the intersection, and wait for the light to turn red). However, with Sheena providing her patented side-driver navigation help (“ERIC! WHAT ARE YOU DOING? USE YOUR SIGNAL!”) we finally arrived at our home for the ... read more

After arriving in Brisbane and having a few days to clean up, Sheena and I started to plan some short day-trips to the many sights around Brisbane to ensure we took advantage of our wheels while we still had them. First stop - Surfer’s Paradise. Gold Coast / Surfer’s Paradise With the sun beating and temperatures high we set out for Sufer's Paradise. Stef & Jakub lived in Surfer's during Jakub's time at Uni and so we were really excited to see what all the hype was about. Driving into Surfer’s was like driving into Miami - neon signs, lots of clubs & hotels, and lots of activity. Definitely a long way from the deserted beaches of Western Australia! With a quick walk around the strip and a bite to eat, Sheena and I finally settled ... read more

What a week! It was tough to say our goodbyes to Perth, but with a ride and a high-five from Mike & Rita at the airport, we were officially out of Perth and looking forward to the last 6 weeks of our trip! First stop...Ayers Rock in a somewhat unconventional way. For some reason Quantas (Australia's major airline) doesn't fly direct from Perth to Cairns, so we had to have a quick stop-over in Ayers Rock - which was great because we got some incredible fly-over pictures of Uluru (Ayers Rock)! It would have been amazing to be there for sunrise/sunset, and even climb it, but at least we can say that we've "been there, done that." Cairns Landing in Cairns we were immediately hit with the weather change - after 6 months of hot & ... read more

Today Eric and I have found ourselves asking the same question, WHERE did the time go? It is hard to believe that 6 months ago we arrived with four suitcases in tow, no home to speak of and the daunting task of finding jobs. Somehow we managed to secure jobs and an apartment within the first couple weeks (both hard to come by!) and though neither were ideal, we stuck it out and made it work. Sure luck might have been on our side but we like to think our determination to make this adventure a success had something to do with it as well. We remember the wide eyed looks we received prior to coming to Perth from family, friends and colleagues who thought we were a tad bit crazy....and hey, they were right...moving across ... read more

One car, 4 adults + camping gear for four people = one very tight ride! After Christmas morning breakfast (banana pancakes courtesy of Rita) we packed the car and headed to the South coast of Western Australia in search of fantastic beaches and breathtaking scenery....needless to say we were not disappointed. Though we had a rough idea of what we wanted to see/do, general consensus was that we would all go with the flow and see where the road took us. First stop was Walpole, a town so small it would be missed in the blink of an eye. We had hoped to make it to Albany on our first night but didn't anticipate the fact that EVERY gas station outside of Perth city limits would be closed. Nervous that the gas tank would soon hit ... read more

Merry Christmas everyone! Just a quick entry, and unfortunately not a lot of pictures with this one. After finishing up work here and having an amazing Christmas eve cook-out by on the Swan River foreshore with Mike & Rita, we are packing up Chevy-Chase style in search of the perfect Christmas Vacation! We have loaded Mike & Rita's car to the hilt (literally...Sheena can't even bring a hair-dryer) and are headed south for adventures of camping, beautiful white powdery beaches, and amazing rock formations. We're not quite sure where we're going or where we might end up, but we do know that it will be the adventure of a lifetime. We'll be back in Perth after the New Year to pack up our apartment before heading for another 4 week vacation on the east coast of ... read more

After making our decision to head home both Sheena and I started to count down the weeks (days!) left that we would have to soak up all that Perth had to offer. So in true 'Scott' fashion, we made a list (Eric did..not Sheena) of things we had to see/do before leaving Perth. Time is definitely moving quick and starting to run out! First thing's first: Java Juice had to go. As much fun as it was to make smoothies all day and drink a ridiculous amount of freshly squeezed juices on my break, it was taking up our available time on weekends. Alas, I bid them a fond farewell (but still am on payroll to ensure that I get that sweet employee discount ;) and now Sheena and I both have our weekends free to ... read more

To say we have been tardy in posting a blog would be an understatement, I will therefore attempt to cover the last month or so and keep it concise...sort of. Over the past few weeks we a) traveled to Bali for 4 fun filled, jam packed days with Mike & Rita b) Debated our job situation here in Australia - at nauseum c) Started to plan our trip to the final destination - home d) welcomed Dani (Sheena's cousin) for a few weeks of fun in Perth, e) celebrated Melbourne Cup, and f) celebrated Sheena's birthday! I will preface this blog by saying that although we’ve experienced some ‘ups’ and ‘downs’ while in the land down under…at the end of the day it still is and continues to be a life changing experience for us. It ... read more
