I know its been a while since we last blogged...amazing how time is flying down here! The month of October has brought us our first bit of SUNSHINE since we arrived in Perth, so we're finally able to get outside, get to the beach, and enjoy some of the outdoor lifestyle that WA has to offer. However, that wasn't before Kevin & June dragged us with Jen & Todd (Kevin's sister & husband) and a few more of their friends to the "Toodyay Races." The Toodyay Races are a set of day long races, where people migrate out to Toodyay (about an hour outside of Perth) to a horse-oval literally cut out of the hillside. With locals in flip-flops and jeans, city-folk dressed in their Sunday best (including a "best dressed" competition...) it was a great ... read more

Thanks to a thoughtful wedding gift (3 nights at a B&B) from our WC friends (Eric’s friends from University) we had a fantastic long weekend in picturesque Margaret River - aka. Perth wine country! Our journey started early Friday afternoon…first thing on the weekend’s agenda? Master driving on the wrong side of the road, yes..its just plain wrong. Off we went in our Toyota hatchback rental, Eric drove first but after a little bit of back seat driving from yours truly…I was soon thrown into the driver’s seat. I am happy to report that not only did I manage to navigate the roads pretty well but I also hit the windshield wipers at least 50% less than Eric when attempting to signal (yes, controls in the car are on opposite sides too). We arrived at the ... read more

This past weekend marked our first venture out onto the Indian Ocean - whale watching! Mike, Rita, Sheena and I headed out to Freo just after noon and boarded a sea cat bound for the area of water known as the "Humpback Highway" - a well traveled strip of water just off the coast which is a favorite passage for Humpback whales coming down from the mating grounds in Northwest Australia down to their feeding grounds around the Antarctic. After a quick bite & some photos we were off on the Rotto Express with a great tour guide who kept us in the loop about what to look for and helped us scout out the whale breaches for some great photo ops. Unfortunately for Mike, there were no other whales (i.e. the blue whale) on our ... read more

This past weekend a blast from my Tri-Campus past, fellow goalie-partner Will and his girlfriend Lindsey came to Perth. Both Will and Lindsey are studying Law at Bond University on the Gold Coast, so when I found out they were going to spend a few days in Perth, I thought it would be great to show them around and do a few more of the sights with them! Saturday was finally a true "spring" day in Perth, with sunny blue skies and temperatures in the low 20's. After a lazy morning on my behalf, we met Lindsey and Will in Fremantle - which is one of the coastal towns/suburbs of Perth. Freo (as its known by the locals) has a bit of character and is actually one of the oldest parts of WA - its where ... read more

So, after my first week of work (and Sheena's 2nd) we celebrated individually in the only two ways we know how: I (of course) went with Kevin, Mike, & Rita to North Fremantle Beach for my very first surfing lesson! While Sheena scheduled herself in for her own form of R&R...a new haircut & highlights! Bright & early on Saturday AM Kevin, June & I loaded into the train to head down to the beach where we'd meet Mike & Rita. Kevin had him and I signed up for some lessons, while Mike & Rita were eager to try out their newly purchased (used) boards (unfortunately, Mike bought a "big wave" board, which may have been a bad idea). Our lesson starts with us pulling up to this Van where in typical surfer style, there are ... read more

To say we have been tardy in updating our blog would be an understatement...however, given the fact that we FINALLY got our internet hooked up this will soon change! There are so many updates since our last post but the following are some of the highlights: 1) We are now both employed! I secured a 3 month contract with an HR services company (The ORS Group) acting as coordinator for their tender team. I started Aug 17th, the first week was slow however the job went from O to 60 today as the bid to tender commenced. The opportunity was better than any temp work I expected to find, the best part is that it is literally a 5 min walk from our apartment and there is talk that they will most likely extend my contract ... read more

Wow, what a week! Though we think it was pure luck, Eric and I managed to secure apartment on July 31st in the heart of Perth city (or as they call it here, CBD). As we soon found out, finding an apartment over here is not as simple as our experiences back home renting. Here all properties are taken care of by realtors, and the agents are the one's to show you through the various properties available for renting (no private landlords like back home). Once you decide you would like to rent the place you then have to submit an application with the first week of rent...easy right? wrong! The application is only the beginning and it does not secure the apartment...its merely a starting point, after which the realtors/owner then decide whether they like ... read more

G'DAY! So after 9 more hours of flying from Fiji, one 5 hour layover in Brisbane, and tons of airplane snacks and pages read in our books....we landed safely in Perth! As most of you probably know June and Kevin (friends of ours from back home) are currently living in Perth as well and have been kind enough to let us crash at their place as we get our bearings. June met us at the Perth airport and brought us back (multiple suitcases in tow!) to their apartment in the heart of the city. June made us the first home cooked meal we'd had in over a week and we settled in for the night exhausted from our series of flights. Our first day in Perth consisted of seeing the sights, wandering through shops/internet cafe's and ... read more

Bula! ('Hello' in Fijian) Sheena and I both decided that it's about time that we started some sort of blog to keep people up to date. Seeing as we have time and internet at our disposal before we fly out to Perth tomorrow, we figured it was as good of time as any to start one! The first week of our honeymoon has been literally out of a postcard. We stayed the bulk of it at Tokoriki Island resort, which is on Tokoriki island, part of the Mamanuca Island group in Fiji. Infinity pools, outdoor showers, fantastic cuisine, intimate dinners, and incredibly friendly staff made this 6 days like nothing we've ever experienced. Once I post the pictures, I hope they do it justice! Some highlights: * Sheena somehow was able to wear every one of ... read more
