We caught the 10.00H ferry to Rottnest Island which lies some 12km off the coast and is very much a holiday resort destination for the people of Perth. Perth is visible on the horizon but the island is a world away from the hussel and bussel of Perth. It's a haven of tranquillity and calm. The island has many sandy bays, no major hotels or development and the majority of the accommodation comprises simple apartments/chalets. No motor cars or dogs are allowed and most people travel around the island on bicycle. One of the charms of the island is the lack of fear that the wildlife has of people. Whilst magpies and crows hang about the cafes, the most endearing animals are the quokkas which can be found sleeping in the sun, resting around the cafes ... read more

So this next part involves taking all the crap out of the van, figuring our how much of it we can take to Rottnest with us (eg clothes, food, surfboard, snorkels, flippers, bikes etc etc). Then with much excitement we are finally ready to pick up Tahlia and head to Rottnest Island. So Tahlia has a · 3.5 hour flight from Adelaide to Perth · 30 minute drive from Perth Airport to Northport Ferry Terminal (flight was late so we missed the ferry, then) · 30 minute ferry ride to Rottnest Island · 10 minute bus ride from harbor to Geordie Bay Villas And that was Tahlia’s long journey of plane, car, boat and bus ride to get to Western Australia and spend some time with her family! We check into our small seaside villa and ... read more

Bergauf - bergab - ... read more

Just a little note, after visiting the stunning Rottnest Island. Rottnest 18k off the coast of Perth/Fremantle. The Dutch actually gave its name to it; when they arrived somewhere in the 1610 they saw a lot of 'rats' and for that called it "rotte nest" which means rotting nest. The rats they saw are actually quokka's. Which are marsupials and are the size of a cat. We did see a lot of them as well, as well as their poop lying around everywhere. As everything in Ozz this is expensive, for that we went on a Tuesday which is half price day for the boat ride. We tried also to be smart with free bikes from the visitor centre and take those over on the boat, but that was a big failure, with some frustrations along ... read more

With a lack of Wi-Fi at the hostel we decided to enjoy breakfast at the cafe next door to get Internet access to post some blogs! After a quick stop at the supermarket to stock up on a few provisions we headed to the ferry terminal for Rottenest Island. Once aboard the 19km journey only took 30 minutes; which was a relief given all the infomercials they played on the crossing to promote all the islands accommodation and restaurants!Based on the lack of availability of bike/ferry package tickets we caught the Bayseeker Bus around the island for a full lap to get our bearings and an understanding of where we wanted to spend time. Part way round the bus came to an abrupt holt as a snake tried commiting ... read more

This beautiful city, as we have seen, has a vast playground on its door step of endless beaches and wild bushwalks. One of its real gems though is Rottnest, a small island some 20kms of its shores. We trundled off there for a bit of snorkelling, again in temperatures of nearly 40 degrees. There are no cars on the island and it is almost essential to hire bicycles if you want to explore, which we of course did. We were aiming for a snorkel-trail but due to the intense heat we could not resist dropping off in the first bay we got to, to cool off, Henrietta’s Bay, after a small shipwreck close to shore. This turned out to be a better snorkelling spot that the tourist trail site and we saw all sorts of tropical ... read more

Hello again from Western Australia! I apologize for my absence as of late; I've been super busy in the lab working! However, I realized the other day that I never fully explained exactly what it is that I am actually working on here. So allow me to explain, for those of you who are interested... My project here is investigating whether we possess an unconscious attentional bias toward attractive faces. Furthermore, we are attempting to disentangle the nature of this potential bias for attractiveness; that is, is our attentional bias toward attractive faces based on attentional capture/engagement, attentional holding/disengagement, or a combination of the two? Past research has demonstrated that we possess a strong conscious bias towards attractive faces. Eyetracking studies have shown that people look longer at attractive versus typical faces; moreover, when people are ... read more

One of the best things about Perth is that there's an island right off the coast full of quokkas. There's an island off Cheyne Beach full of quokkas too but no-one's allowed on there (that's Bald Island, which is also full of Gilbert's potoroos). A quokka is a type of little wallaby, once common on the western mainland but now largely exterminated by foxes and cats. They were first seen by Europeans in 1658 when Samuel Volkerssen, skipper of the Dutch ship Waeckende Boey (which looks like it translates as "Weekend Boy" -- exactly what sort of cruise was this?), spotted some on Rottnest Island. He thought they were a kind of civet, which sounds a bit odd but they actually do have a pointy civet-y sort of face, even if the hoppiness isn't exactly a ... read more

So it was time to head to Western Australia after our quick week in Wollongong. We got dropped off at a hotel near the airport in Sydney for the night by Brett's dad on another one of his airport runs before he leaves back to Vancouver on Monday. We were sorry to see him go, but think he was happy to get back to Brett's Mom and relax a bit after all these airport shuttle runs for everyone, and we were pretty excited to be heading to Western Australia, even if we had to work. But we weren't complaining at all – especially when we stepped off the plane, into the beautiful weather, picked up our Hyundai Getz (Brett barely fits in and with our bags there is even less room, but seems to be the ... read more

Quokkas are small marsupials, the size of a genitically modified rat, but far cuter and are found throughout Rottnest Island. I have just come back from a 2 night stay, with my wife and 2 boys. The lads had a ball, as cars are not allowed (unless you work on the island in maintenance, operations or the police) and my wife got the chance to finally have some well earned rest with a massage. Bikes are the best form of transport and soon remind you of those childhood days when bike locks were rarely needed. After snorkelling with an octopus (I bumped into it at the reef that hugs the serene beach at Salmon Bay) I ventured to the hotel bar for sundowners. Ideally, the hotel would be on the Western side of the island to ... read more
