Monkey Mia This is a collection of notes and not as well written as the last blog, however it gives a flavour of this part of the trip. We are having problems finding internet connections, so the blogs will be updated as internet connections become available. Its written by Judi and me at odd times, so that it appears odd at times as to who is writing this. But that’s ok. The countryside is red and dramatic - lots of red dirt, white and sand coloured sand. After a 6 hour drive we arrived at the Monkey Mia gate with Temp at 48ish. We had lovely rooms with views over beach and a Barbie on the porch. Unpacked - showered and dressed for dinner. Restaurant was lovely, but hot. We had good food “Australian tucker” Dolphins ... read more

Blog travelling start here JUDI The day before our holidays begun we were pleased that the final onslaughts of preparations were almost completed. Packing took till 2.00 am and we were shattered when retiring for bed but happy. We went through a check list to make sure we had not forgotten anything. All that was left to do was to sleep, get up early, wash and dress, clean the house, change the bed, label the suitcases and GO..! I woke up one and half hours early with a chilling thought that I had not turned off the electric fire in my flat in Jerviston on my last visit. I just could not remember. So being distraught had to tell Murdo…aargh…the poor man had wanted a leisurely morning with NO stress. He calmly (bless) suggested I get ... read more

As a treat we decided to have a very lazy morning so slept in until almost 10am. I felt so guilty but it was worth it! We made ourselves a fry up breakfast/lunch and then it was already time to go to the next trip. This one was a nature cruise aboard the Shotover - a large, luxurious catamaran. The weather was hot so we had on our hats, sunglasses and sunblock ready as there was little shade aboard the boat. We took a seat and waited excitedly, thinking about the types of wildlife we might encounter. The two crew members introduced themselves we got the sails up and moved off. We were all given polarised sunglasses to wear as we were told these would give better visibility. When I put them on the colours around ... read more

Today we went on our first Monkey Mia tour. It was a full day safari trip through the national park. We all met at the tour booking office and were introduced to Tim Hargreaves, our guide for the day. He was a cheery bearded man, the kind you could imagine to make a fun worldly wise grandfather. He was full of old stories and had experienced lots of adventures during his lifetime travelling the world. He was originally from Jersey and had been officially Australian since the 70s but he still had a very posh English accent gained from years at boarding schools. We took us into Denham first and told how the early settlers were attracted to the place because of the abundance of pearl shells and sandalwood. He pointed to a small restaurant on ... read more

We decided to see if we could make it all the way to Monkey Mia in one journey - it was less distance than Broome to Port Headland so we thought it was achievable. I packed a bag of food and drink for the cab and after a final drive through Coral Bay to the petrol pump we made our escape. Almost as soon as we set off along the straight road an emu ran out of the bushes in front of us. We were doing about 120kph at the time! Matt slammed on the brakes making everything in the back of the van slide to the front, slowing down just enough to allow it to escape. If we’d seen it a second later, or if the bird was any slower, it would have been roadkill. ... read more

Today we went to see the 2nd and 3rd feed of the dolphins as it is our last day here, ther are so lovely to watch! the babies were playing around and catching the small fish! The dolphins that come into this bay are Indo-Pacific bottlenosed dolphins and they grow speckles on the tummies the older they get! They are half the size of the traditional bottle nosed dolphin. Spent the rest of the morning sunbathing and watching the dolphins play... At 17.45 we went to the pier to go on the evening cruise on the catamaran. Saw a big turtle in the bay! It's an hour and a half long and at certain times of year the trip is to watch the sun go down but it was too early being the summer time so ... read more

On our trip back down the west coast of Australia we stopped at Monkey Mia where we met the wild dolphins, went searching and found Dugongs on a catamaran and had an informative bush walk with Darren "Capes" Capewell. We then visited the Pinnacles near Cervantes before heading down to Fremantle where we were reunited with Natalie and Lisa who we met on our diving trip at Coral Bay. ... read more

Today we left Denham - WAHOO! Settled in on the grass tent area!!! Had a look around and there is a pool, tennis courts etc so they must get alot of visitors who stay a long time. We got to meet the local Emu - who wonders around the campsite... ! At 1pm we had a boat trip on a Catamaran called the Shotover. We went on a 3 1/2 hour cruise in and around the Bay. We only got a few K's offshore but we saw massive turtles. In the area there are loggerhead and green turtles, the loggerhead ones sunbath on the surface so easier to see and the others only pop up for a breath every 12 hours or so then go back down to the bottom of the ocean. Saw the group ... read more

WE left Exmouth and headed south enroute to Carnarvon but decided to stop at Coral bay for another snorkel, before saying goodbye to the reef and making our way south. We arrived late into Carnarvon and set up in the Big 4 caravan park that had a great view of the OTC satellite dish that is now not in use but was used to communicate with the Apollo missions and to also track Halley's Comet. Still travelling south we arrived in Denham for a couple of days to explore the area , the highlight was to see the Dolphins at Monkey Mia. The only disappointment was that you had to be chosen out of the crowd to feed them while they we close to shore and only Steph and Dannielle were chosen so Samuel was not ... read more
