Well we all had a good sleep and headed off from Nanga bay and went to investigate Shell beach, here the beach was covered in shells and the odd green bush type plant. The shells are washed up from sea onto the beach they say it is around 30 meters deep, their is a quarry to the left of the beach and they chop blocks of the crushed shells and use then for bricks and the dusty bits for chicken feed. The waters edge was so frothy but funny enough I did not get a good photo of this. Back into the van and our journey continues up north to Shark Bay, we arrived around lunch time and checked into the only camp site here so yes it was expensive. We headed straight for the beach ... read more

Monkey Mia is a resort built on a beach where dolphins come every day to be fed by volunteers. We enquired about volunteering here but weren't given a definate answer that we could so we decided to just pass through. The dolphins get fed three times every morning and then there's nothing much to do but sunbathe and relax in the pool and hot tub. The dolphins are gorgeous and one of them has a little calf that's less than two weeks old. The calf kept zooming around and looked like it hadn't quite got the hang of swimming! Adorable. I was picked to feed a dolphin on the first day, I think I fed Puck. We left the beach after the first feed on the first day and sunbathed on the beach. Today, we got ... read more

I have had my first dolphin feeding experience (and first argument) at Monkey Mia! The first dolphin feeding is at 7.30am - so I was up early and waiting on the beach at about 7.15am - getting what I believed to be a prime position. Two dolphins (which I later found out were mum and son) were already frolicking in the water. The younger dolphin gave everyone a little bit of a show by jumping out of the water several times - all was looking good! Then came the two silly old biddies - they must have each been about 75 in the shade, one would have thought that they would have learned some manners by now - who decided to come and push their way right in front of me. Being a cool, calm and ... read more

First of all, let me say that I am rather disappointed that no one commented on the title of my previous post - namely “Having a Whale of a Time”. I was sure that at least a few of you would have a go at me over it! :-) Am in Coral Bay for the night about 150kms or so south of Exmouth. Am still on Ningaloo Reef - however I have to say that I preferred Turquoise Bay - the water was a tad warmer, and the fish life was more varied, although I did see a Manta Ray in the water today. More on that in a little bit. I awoke yesterday morning to a howling wind roaring around the Thunderbox, so I immediately thought my chances of snorkelling again were looking fairly slim! ... read more

Dolphins at Monkey Mia Monkey Mia is famous for its Dolphins, which come to the bay every morning to feed. So up at the crack of dawn, we stumbled out the bedroom door to the beautiful aroma of stale beer…picking up the scattered playing cards and disguising our bloodshot eyes with sunnies we piled on to the bus. Arriving at Monkey Mia, which is one of the most pristine marine environments in the world, we lined up along the shore. Rangers were on hand giving an insight to these sociable animals as the females approached right under our feet. A lucky few were selected from the crowd, Alysha was disappointed when Merrin’s name was called and not hers. The dolphins are only given 6 fish each and there is a pecking order. They are so intelligent ... read more

Hallo, Coming down the west coast of Australia you can turn of the highway one to go to Monkey Mia. A special place to visit as in the bay you can encounter dolphins. They come really close to shore, specially as they know people will feed some fish three times a day, you are not allowed to touch them though, as they are to remain independent.

Monkey Mia Kalbarri was a bit of a let down due to the drought of people. Didn't get to do the activities but did get to go up in a little plane at sunset which was good. All my own fault for not checking this all out before I left. By the way happy Easter to you all! Don't eat too much chocolate...i have a Kitekat that I've treated myself to. I am spending Easter at Monkey Mia - yeap the place with the dolphins. It really is like paradise. the dolphins really are just a foot or so away from you in the water and I got a great photo of one of them looking out the water right at me. Went out on a catamaran tour yesterday and just saw so much wildlife as ... read more

We are writing this in Perth, we had a little trouble with a crazy space bar on the only kiosk that was available in Monkey Mia. So, from memory....we woke up on the 2nd, nice and early and went for a walk down the beach. First sign things were going to be good were the dorsal fins floating near the jetty. A group of people had begun to gather around the shore already. When we arrived at the shore, the dolphins were swimming around, a couple a calves playing with each other. A ranger came down, gave a speech about NOOO!!!!! touching and then came the grog (ie...fish, but grog actually is another term for booze here, but we call it grog cause we think the dolphins are kinda coming in for a fix). We were ... read more

We had a full day in Perth on Thursday and we decided to go a bit on the wild side and do nothing! We found King's Park, a park with a very long history in these parts, and took a nap. It was hot...it was sunny...it seemed like the right thing to do. They have a very cool bus system in the central part of the city, it's free for certain routes. So after our nap we had a mini tour ride, then found a movie and looked back on time well spent. This morning was a little different. It was time to go to Monkey Mia and spend some time swimming in the Indian Ocean with the dolphins. We arrived in the afternoon to some heat quite reminicient to the rock, sans flies! We did ... read more

After spending nearly a week in Perth we decided to hire a car and drive up the coast and see a bit of Oz away from the city. We left Perth early in the morning and we spent nearly all day driving, only stopping to swap over the driving and filling up with petrol. It was so different to driving at home....in a stretch of road about 50km long, which was completely straight, we saw virtually no cars in either direction! Ten hours later we arrived at our accommodation for the next 3 nights. For as long as we can remember there has been a sign at home when you exit Uxbridge (North West London for those who don't know) and enter Denham saying "Denham, twinned with Denham, Shark Bay, Western Australia", so the long standing ... read more
