Our last week “together”... wow, that sounds weird to say. It seems like just yesterday we were getting off the bus in Kuala Lumpur to intense humidity and smells anticipating the long journey ahead of us. It is true that time does indeed fly when you’re have the time of your lives. For our last week, on December 9th we headed to Dunsborough, near Margaret River, south of Perth. 12 years ago when I purchased my timeshare, I had no idea I’d be taking advantage of it on this side of the world, but man are we glad we have it. We stayed in a super nice place stocked with a pool, hottub, barbecues and beach access. Being able to kite in front of our place would have really topped it off, but unfortunately it was ... read more

Dec 13th - Dec 15th The world famous Margaret River region has over 100 wineries to explore not to mention chocolate shops, gourmet cheese producers, a fudge factory, ice creameries and breweries. It would be easy to spend a few days there (with a designated driver of course) ambling from one cellar door to the next stopping off for lunch by the river and gorging yourself on amazing chocolates. We chose to do an all day Bushtucker wine tour which turned out to be a lot of fun with a great group of people and ended at 11pm in a bar after a few songs on the karaoke. This wine tour was a lot different than the one in New Zealand. It was very laid back and a great laugh with everyone on the trip (there ... read more

Day 219 - Conto Campground (Leewin-Naturiliste National Park) It’s just bliss waking up in such a beautiful and tranquil setting, the Kookaburras were already laughing high in the trees (no sign of death and destruction as yet!) and Simone had walked to the beach and back by the time we got up! We enjoyed our lie in til 7am this morning and we weren’t getting out from under the warm covers for anyone. The kids are on form again and it takes a lot of concentration from them to do some school work before we head out for the day but they do it and by 10.30 we’re on the road towards Margaret River. Shockingly the weather does not look good and the sky suggests that it might even rain (sharp intake of breath) so we ... read more

Day 218 - Shannon National Park to Conto Campground We’re on the move again this morning but we haven’t got far to go so there’s no real rush. There’s time to enjoy some toast for breakfast and a hot shower, what a luxury that is when we’re camping in the bush. Ken, Zoe and Beth (the Reeves children) are great fun to be around. They’re so energetic, funny, imaginative and beautifully mannered. It’s a terrific family to be travelling with and the kids are certainly keeping us on our toes. Darryl spends a lot of time playing with Kenny, they’ve found mutual ground in driving each other crazy (in a very lovely way!) and the rest of us just laugh ourselves silly at them. The packing up doesn’t take long and before the clock strikes much ... read more
Another one of my 'short' walks that didn't turn out to be that short! 3.5km turned into just over 6km which was easy for us but tough for the kids

Like most people, Geology has never really been my thing and my interest in rocks doesn’t extend past the sparkly, wearable kind. That said anything, let alone a rock, that has its own airport, commands its visitors to get up at 4:30am, divides them over climbing it and has two names must be worth a visit. It was. Ayers Rock, known to the Aboriginals’ as Uluru, attracts people to the middle of nowhere because of the array of colours it turns throughout the day; and from a geological perspective it is an astounding single piece of rock in near complete isolation. To climb or not to climb is the question you face once you’ve watched sunset and sunrise. The traditional aboriginal owners are against anyone climbing as they view the rock as a religious monument. Liberta !

It was a three day cruise from Bali, our last Asian port, to the big beautiful continent of Australia. Just 72 hours took us between two very different worlds. We arrived in Fremantle on a gorgeous Monday morning. Ann, our friend from Australia, met us at the Freo port and drove us to the Rottnest Ferry terminal. We had planned to spend the day on Rottnest Island, a former Aboriginal penal colony and home to the indigenous quokka marsupials. As we were waiting to board the ferry Ann said, “How would you like to take a drive from here to Albany?”-- our next port of call. It only took a few minutes to figure out the logistics for this change of plans. We went back to the ship, packed an overnight bag, grabbed our passports and ... read more

Oct. 9th: After leaving Bunbury, Kevin and I headed to beautiful Margaret River! This small town is very famous in Australia for its wineries. The weather in Margaret River was very chilly and rainy when we were there. And our hostel room was freezing too! One thing you might not know about Australia is that it is not sunny and hot all year round. Haha. So, our first day in Margaret River, we only explored the town for a short while, and then hurried back to the hostel because of the weather. As I said, Margaret River is home to many wineries, so of course we had to go on a wine tour! The tour company we chose was called “Wine for Dudes”, and was geared towards backpackers and young people. Our tour group was really ... read more

Thanks to a thoughtful wedding gift (3 nights at a B&B) from our WC friends (Eric’s friends from University) we had a fantastic long weekend in picturesque Margaret River - aka. Perth wine country! Our journey started early Friday afternoon…first thing on the weekend’s agenda? Master driving on the wrong side of the road, yes..its just plain wrong. Off we went in our Toyota hatchback rental, Eric drove first but after a little bit of back seat driving from yours truly…I was soon thrown into the driver’s seat. I am happy to report that not only did I manage to navigate the roads pretty well but I also hit the windshield wipers at least 50% less than Eric when attempting to signal (yes, controls in the car are on opposite sides too). We arrived at the ... read more

Hi there everyone, hope you are all surviving winter & enjoying some good soul food & of course some reds! Medical update: on the 29th May Jeff had his hip operation in Perth. Basically they went in with a mini angle grinder and ground off the tear in the hip lining and while they were in there unfortunately found his cartilage coming away from the hip joint. So, they scratched up the bone underneath it in the hope that when scar tissue forms it will help re-stick the loose cartilage. Not the best news really, we were hoping it was just going be the tear to fix. However, the doc thinks that with time it will get stronger & more adhered to the bone…worst case scenario hip replacement (don’t wanna go there as plastic hips only ... read more
