Down we trekked from the heat of Perth south to a comparatively cooler area called Margaret River – originally a ‘surfer dude’ township but now better known as a fabulous wine region..... The reason for this destination was Matt - Andrew’s nephew / cousin to our children. He lives there with his lovely wife Paula and their two incredibly sweet children Olivia & Zoe. He was a championship sponsored surfer and has surfed the world over – his favourite breaks in Indonesia where he worked on a surf boat as a chef. But now with a family, he tells me Margaret River and the Cape Leewin-Naturaliste Coastline is just about the best place a surfer can be to raise a family and still hit the big surf daily. It is one of the world’s top 5 ... read more

Hi everyone It’s a lovely sunny and not too hot day today in Dunsborough, WA. This is unlike Perth which is going to be 37 degrees again. As we are near the beach, we have a good breeze. The humidity is also very low. As a result, my hair is an absolute disaster and looks more like a bird’s nest than usual. I got extra strength gel to tame it a bit. I hate having photos where I look like a sheep. The place we are staying at is very nice. The beach is just a short walk though a stand of trees. It’s just beautiful. We went to the township of Dunsborough which is very upmarket and evolved from a group of holiday shacks to the so called Millionaires Row community. We had lunch at a ... read more

Hi everyone We are off on another adventure. This time to the Margaret river wine district in western Australia. I am trading in my keyboard for a few days and having a break from my thesis. First I would like to thank everyone who made this trip possible. As Cleo had such a bad time at the pet resort last time she is going for a holiday with Jo and Bruce in Cooroy. I do hope she wants to come home. Thanks to Pete and Di for looking after the house. We are looking forward to seeing our friends David and Barbara who are tavelling 12000 miles to come be in WA with us? We're staying at this resort http://www.wyndhamvrap.com/resorts/dunsborough and we really hope it's as good as it looks in the pictures. I've added some ... read more

20 Dec 2011 - 5 January 2012 Smithmas!! Or perhaps Cyclone Smith is a better description? Yay, the Smiths landed on 22 December to spend Christmas and their holidays with us. It was around this time that Bohdi's fetish for Oscar's shoes was born. Holy dooly, can that kid go through some shoes in a day! Nearly every time we saw Shell and Steve for the next two weeks they were changing Bohdi's shoes! We arrived in Coogee a couple of days prior to organise ourselves and catch up on housekeeping duties. Well, in true Smith-style, they arrived in a very loud-coloured electric blue car - like they needed to draw any extra attention to themselves!.. It was so great to see them and spend Christmas, New Year's and Sienna's birthday together. The kids all had ... read more

29 November - 5 December 2011 We didn't realise how much we missed being on the road until we were back on the road for the south west Western Australia leg of the trip. We had been as far as Margaret River before but no further. Wow, what an incredible, amazing and stunning part of the country. We have been blown away day after day by the beauty of the "little" south west pocket of WA. I say little in the big scheme of things but the area we covered is actually bigger than Tasmania! When you are under tow driving along the bitumen or dirt, heading for a new desination but not actually knowing the whereabouts you will be laying your head that night, there is an overwhelming feeling of freedom and excited anticipation. It's ... read more

So the day's here! I'm up bright and early and headed over to the coffee shop for a latte to line my stomach ready for the wine tasting. Phone rings - 'Hey Adele, sorry to do this but I've had to cancel today's wine tour. Hope you can make it tomorrow!' GAH! No I can't - I'm off to Perth tomorrow. You're kidding me right? 'No, sorry! Go to the tourist info centre and they'll refund you'. I'm crying into my latte. The one day I can do this tour and it's off. Insufficient numbers. What am I going to do? I ran to the visitor centre and begged for my life - was there anyway of squeezing onto another tour? And guess what.... Woohoo! Bushtucker Tours squeezed me onto their tour and picked me up ... read more

I'm in an area that has hundreds of vineyards. There are signs for winery after winery, free tastings at each, yet I can't partake. Why? Because they only way to navigate around these wineries is to drive. There are no public buses in the area, and the only way to do the wine tastings when you're a solo traveller is to take one of the 'competitively priced' tours. I signed myself up for one as I'm not coming all the way down here without supping what the area has to offer, but it's blown my budget out of the water! Still, all that red wine is bound to be worth it.... I picked up the bottles of wine for Lindsey and Bret at the Cape Naturaliste vineyard, to the north of the region, and then headed ... read more

3 - 17 September 2011 The much anticipated arrival of Nanna and Pa is finally upon us! Always so good to see the parents, especially when it's in a different part of the country every time we see them these days! They stayed in the same caravan park as us at Coogee and the six of us took a trip down to Margaret River for four nights somewhere in the middle of their stay. We did the tourist thing around Perth and Fremantle - the Historic Fremantle Prison, Kings Park and the Botannical Gardens, Burns Beach and Hilary's Boat Harbour, Freo Markets and Fishing Boat Harbour.... The best part, however, was just relaxing in the evenings with the wine, cheese, chocolate and other goodies we came across sitting around the table playing Bastard Bridge and catching ... read more

We left Perth bright and early and drove up to Kings Park to visit the War Memorial and it also has the best view of Perth. The weather was kind to us again being sunny and 21deg. Kings Park is a definite visit just to get an appreciation of the city. The memorial is pretty awesome too. The parkland is the largest inner city park in the world, with walking tracks all the way through. There were many joggers, cyclists, mums with prams and tourists all enjoying the park. After a quick refill of the radiator, yes we are still losing water, we headed out for Fremantle. Just across the river “Freeo” is not unlike Port Adelaide with many old historic buildings. Our first stop was to find a double car park ???? As it was ... read more

Here is my first blog from Australia. It isn't quite as action packed as some of my other blogs, as I was pretty shattered after 5 months travelling, so took the opportunity of staying with some family in Margaret River and taking things at a much slower pace for a bit :D I arrived in Perth in the wee hours of the morning (2am), and was picked up by my fabulous cousin, Barbara. I was whisked back to the family home, where I was given the bottom bunk of their kids bunkbed (meaning my poor little second cousin was taken from her bed and put in her parents room....felt quite bad about that), where I promptly passed out, fast asleep. I awoke the next morning to the sound of giggling. My two little second cousins (Bobbie ... read more
