Well we have sadly left Darwin and now back on the road headed for Perth! Darwin truly has been one of the highlights of our travels around Australia so far, as we have made some wonderful friends during our 4 months living in the campsite. Our social life had never been so good what with happy hours most nights and going out to the Casino weekly plus dancing at the local tavern on many a Friday night. Still with the wet season not far away and the humidity rising it was time for us to move on. Most of our neighbours have already left so our group was dwindling fast and parts of the campground were starting to look very deserted. Before we left we hopped across to Bali, as one does, and had a fantastic ... read more

Three days here at Kununurra has been a joyful lesson about the last town before crossing the border into the Northern Territory. We have driven through dry and dusty places to get to Kununurra, then this bright green district startles as the transition from arid to lush irrigation is quite abrupt. Despite lack of rain, this district along the Ord River (fed from Lake Argyle) is full of life in every respect. Yes, it is a little town with a mix of races. The local aboriginal people live in the town rather than in a remote community like Warmun. You will find them sitting by day under the large shade trees. I was amazed at one great grandma that we talked to (28 great grand kids) was easily able to just squat on the grass, legs ... read more

We leave our fossickers behind in Broome, they are going back to Port Smith and we are heading east for the first time in four months. We have had a great time together, from our adventures over the Nullabor, Kalgoorlie, and all the places we have been digging up all sorts of things. They are great people, and we're sad to be leaving them behind, but we will meet again somewhere on the road. The town of Derby has the highest rise and fall of the tide in Australia, and it’s really something to see it coming in when we get out onto the jetty. There are a few fishermen there, and some have the lines wrapped around the railings, because if you catch a fish here, especially a shark, it will pull you in and ... read more

We had another swim in the Thermal Pools at Mataranka and we left for Kakadu on the way we went to Cutta Cutta Caves, it was really dark, then we went to Katherine Gorge. We swam in the pool and went for walk to a lookout which was 200 meters high, it was great. We stayed at Katherine for 2 nights and we saw lots of bats! From here we went to Kakadu National Park, we stayed at Gunlom, Cooinda, Ubirr and finally 2 nights at Aurora Kakadu. When we were in Kakadu may favourite places were Jim Jim Falls and Twin Falls. Then we went to Darwin and on the way we went on a cruise and watched Jumping Crocodiles! I wasn't scared but Mum was..... When we got to Darwin we saw Ma and ... read more

Well we left Katherine with Jackie feeling much better and rested, our intention was to stop at Timber creek which is about half way to Kununurra but the road house has seen better days and the campground was a dust bowl so we stopped for lunch and headed off. Just outside Kununurra is a quarantine station which is manned 24/7 no fruit or veg allowed into WA from the NT every vehicle is stopped and our caravan was searched. We had eaten our fruit and cooked, and frozen our veg over the previous days so no drama's for us.As we drew nearer to Kununurra we tried to find a campground but no vacancies so we pushed on out of town about 10k and found a free camp. All of the perimeter spots were taken so we had to settle ... read more

It was a beautiful drive along the Victoria Highway passing through the Gregory National Park. Border quarantine was kind to us and we got through relatively quickly and then onto Lake Argyle. A grassy and shady afternoon van site helped us enjoy a beautiful week. Everyday we spent time at the Infinity pool with a backdrop overlooking Lake Argyle and the surrounding ranges. It was mesmerising. We did a walk to view the river, one to a lookout overlooking the lake and one to the homestead which has been relocated once the dam was established. We had a glorious afternoon and evening on a boat doing a sunset tour with some people swimming out in the middle...but with 35,000 crocs, albeit freshwater, we decided a glass of wine with pate and cheese was more our style! ... read more

After leaving Katherine, we head to the WA border with an off road overnight camp at Big Horse Creek NT. Till and I do a bit of croc spotting while looking for a fishing spot. Temperature hits 37 so its time to re-hydrate :) before Reuben gets to use his now 5 prong marsh-mellow holder at the camp fire. Border crossing into WA reveals we are chilli, garlic and onion smuggles and have our stash confiscated. We blame Reuben and Matilda, they are held in special lock up. (see pic)... read more

We are parked up in the Ivanhoe CP in Kununurra in an extremely small site. Thank heavens the one behind us was empty when we arrived because we could not have backed in there. Same Same for Shirley and Dave. With our van and annex deployed there is not enough room to park our car so it has to hang out onto the road. Rushed out on the morning of the 10th and did some shopping most especially to get lotto for Tuesday and Thursday so Mary, GMan and I can continue to dream of great things. At 10:30 am all four of us headed out to Lake Argyle area where we spent some time checking out the relocated Argyle homestead. It is far more sophistocated that when we last visited it 23 years ago, poshed ... read more

Whilst we were waiting in Derby for the parts for our repairs to arrive we caught sight of this wonderful sign on the back of a Vista Camper Trailer ($$$). We dropped the caravan off to the welder at 7:35 am on 5th and then had to amuse ourselves as best we could until we got news of whether the parts had arrived or that the repairs were completed. We set off for the jetty where we walked out to do what most people don’t do, inspect the low tide. This was just as fascinating as the high tide. Especially when we finally worked out that the three trailer fuel tanker out on the jetty was refuelling a ship which could not be seen because it was completely below the decking of the jetty. You can ... read more

We really liked the Timber Creek Caravan Park. Small park, plenty of shade, amenities fine etc. It has a lovely grassed area down by the creek which has fresh water crocs in it. On our way from the Buchanan Highway to Timber Creek we noticed the first of the boab trees. Because our booking in Kununurra started on 10th May we decided to stay in the cool for an extra day and lingered. Still no sight seeing as we will be doing it with Dave and Shirley one the way back through. Here we did a big clean up on the van. The amount of dust getting into the interior has diminished considerably with all our efforts on tracking down and blocking little leaks. I swept, vacuumed, dusted etc. I like the size of this house ... read more
